So we were starting to think we had made the wrong decision to go to Canada; the whole drive from Seattle was rain, rain and more rain and we were starting to get a sense of home! We were supposed to be staying in a really cheap hostel in Vancouver but after having a brief look around it (what a state) we decided against sleeping with the bed bugs on the brown piece of foam for a mattress! We drove around Vancouver in the car and decided we would move on; we were supposed to be going to a park for a free festival but the rain was relentless so we drove on to a campsite we planned to go to tomorrow. It was really beautiful scenery and miraculously when we arrived at the campground at ... read more

¡Vamanos a Perú! Hola amigos! I'm going traveling to Perú from January 27th until February 12th, 2011 and have decided to resurrect this travel blog and post some updates during the trip! This is my Mom's year-long teaching sabbatical, and she's been across the US, to Vancouver, Mexico, Guatemala, and more. Peru is our trip together and we're both really excited! Tonight I'm going to do a practice run of packing my backpack since next week is busy with work conferences and I fly out of Vancouver late on Thursday night to Toronto, meet up with Mom there to catch our flight to Lima. We have plans for Lima, Arequipa, Lake Titicaca, Cusco, Machu Picchu, some festivals, and more, so if you would like to hear some stories and see some photos, please subscribe and we ... read more

Arrival in Canada So, it has been three weeks since I last updated the blog. I often find myself sitting down ready to write and being stuck. Not being stuck in the "mind being blank" sort of stuck rather, "when someone reads this they will think it's stupid" sort of stuck. I need to just write and stop thinking the writing needs to be perfect. I'm not a writer for Christ sake and I have never been taught. The goal of this blog is to tell people what I am up to and hopefully lightly entertain along the way. I'm glad that is off my chest. It's funny how my mind must be clear of obstacles before I can really get anything done. I am sorry for that somewhat useless and probably uninteresting rant. I arrived ... read more

A sad day because we are going home. Day started with a long walk down to the park. Watched people chilling out on the first day of the weekend. Then back to the hotel. Stretched limo arrived on time to pick us up to go to the airport. Plane was delayed but we were soon on our way home. An 8.5 hour 5000 mile trip back to Heathrow. Another adventure is over.... read more

Our last full day in Canada and it seems so long ago that we were in Toronto. We have made and lost some good friends and seen so many things. Today started wth a leisurely breakfast at a civilised time. Then out to explore. It was raining hard so we bought a day rover ticket and set off on the bus. The harbour is truly beautiful and after a walk around, we took one of the little water taxis across the bay.l Saw the cruise ship that will take some of our group to Alaska. Felt slightly envious. We did our shopping then stopped for lunch. A delicious salad. We then went out to Stanley park by trolley bus. A lovely walk through an Indian village. Saw racoons for the first time. Babies left by their ... read more

We are now in Vancouver on the last two nights of our holiday adventure. We have said goodbye to our driver Steve and are preparing to go on a fairwell dinner cruise tonight. Then it will be time to say goodbye to our guide John who has been fantastic. Yesterday started with a walk down to the harbour and boarding a 60ft boat to go whale hunting. We were soon off and setting out into the Pacific ocean. Pam was very brave but her nervousness was soon forgotten when to we spotted our first group or killer whales. They are majestic and I have fulfilled one of the great ambitions of my life. We saw many wore including young then headed through the fog bank to the island outcrops where seals and sea lions were basking ... read more

CANADA!! saddly i'm writing this almost 6mths after the trip... so it's somewhat lacking :/ part 1 - Vancouer I had always imagined Canada to be like Australia... in many ways, but generally in day-to-day culture... & i guess in hindsight... it is! After my culture shock in the US, I also expected to like Canada more... or feel more at home there... I didnt :/ Vancouver is a nice city... it's clean, new, modern, wealthy... in fact, after spending 4mths in Asia, all I could see in Vancouver was immense wealth! which is why I was absolutely shocked, stunned & disgusted by the number of homeless people & beggars that we saw in the streets... I found this really disheartening & sickening... to me Canada represents the 'new world' & the 1st world (if there ... read more

Monday morning already, only 2 more days until we fly home. We headed off for a day of tourist activity. Went with Joe, Naomi and Jon to Lynn Valley Suspension Bridge. In the heart of the city the suspension bridge hangs over an amazing river at quite a height. Under the bridge young people swim in the river, being dare devils and leaping from rock ledges into the pools below. We wallked for about an hour and then headed for some lunch. We found a nice restaurant with a wide variety of foods and the 5 of us enjoyed our meal. Once we had deposited the boys at home Jim, Naomi and I went out to Grenville Island for some shopping. Again a hidden village in the heart of Vancouver, full of shops and fun things ... read more

Wednesday August 4th Arrived in Vancouver this morning. Naomi and Jon were there to meet us, it was so good to see her. We picked up our baggage and then had a short wait for the Westy to arrive. Loaded the bags into the bus and Jim got the low down on gas, propane, water and the general workings of the beast. Drove through down town Vancouver and over the Lions Gate Bridge heading to Jon's parents home. The bus will be great for the next two weeks, our home on wheels. The camping gear provided by Westy rentals is not that great so we are going to borrow supplies from Naomi. Things like dish clothes, tea towels and simple place settings would be good to have. Then comes shopping. The fridge in the camper only ... read more
