Geo: 49.3792, -123.083Had booked in for breakfast with some grizzlies on the top of Grouse Mountain via the internet. We got up early even though Isaac is up early every morning and puts himself into his pushchair at about 5.30am every morning ready for his next big adventure! We needed to walk to the waterfront, get a ferry across to Lonsdale Quay then a bus to the mountain. This all seemed rather hassly but worked out perfectly pleasant and straight forward. The sky train up to Grouse Moubtain is disappointing as they crowd a huge number of people into one 'train' making it very much a transit experience rather than a touristic one. On arriving at the top, we followed the bear prints on the ground, past some amazing chainsaw sculptures, and went to wake up ... read more

Just back at John's place in North Vancouver. Undercast the last two days. Big foggy foghorns thru the Vancouver night yet clear skies and days of sun on upper Lonsdale. Good to be back with solid John after his bein split from stem to stern. So much to learn about courage and determination and focus after such an invasion to the core. In two days i'll be inbound to Hilo, Hi. My very first visit there! Molly, Quitzma, Paxkal!! I'm coming! Imagining myself flying over the Pacific!!!!... read more

September 17, 2013 – North Vancouver After a delicious breakfast of waffles (!) we all head out over Lions Gate Bridge and to Lynn Canyon Park, in particular the Suspension Bridge that hangs 50 metres above Lynn Creek, the height of a 15 story building. Originally people crossed over the creek on a log suspended above the canyon. Then, when the park opened in 1912, it was hoped the bridge would become a tourist attraction. Visitors paid 10 cents to cross the bridge. Today it’s free which makes it one of the few attractions to have dropped in price! And one of even fewer attractions around Vancouver that’s free! It also makes it a much better option than Capilano Suspension Bridge, which would cost our family over C$100 and be way more crowded to boot. We ... read more

August 25, 2013 Another beautiful morning and another beautiful location. I’m typing this sitting on a lovely little veranda in North Vancouver with a fabulous view down into Greater Vancouver with the mountains of Seymour in view to our left. We have a little visitor every now and again, a tiny, dainty little hummingbird and Steve has managed to capture him on camera. Now I know this next subject may make me sound 'kinda sad' but it also shows I appreciate life’s simplicities! Up until now, despite fantastic weather, we’ve been forced to use a tumble drier, unable to find any form of a clothes horse or outside line. I remember feeling rather envious that our neighbours on Quadra Island not only had an outside line but one of those cable devices from their deck where ... read more

July 31st, 2013 Another day another mountain. This time it’s Mount Seymour in North Vancouver. To quote from BC parks website it’s “4 km. Suggested hiking time, 2.5 hours. Elevation change, 450 metres. This busy trail starts near the north end of the top parking lot, traversing Brockton Point and First and Second Pump Peaks. From the summit there is a panoramic view of Vancouver, the lower mainland and, on a clear day, the Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island. This hike is rated moderate to difficult”. Of course you also have to come down again so you can double the distance and time - although Matthew had us laughing when he declared, close to the summit, “when I get up to the top I’m not going to come down!” Unfortunately this wasn’t Grouse. There was no ... read more

July 30th, 2013 Having a car means a little more freedom to get out and explore further afield. Added to the fact that the weather is still so good we decided it had to be the local mountains again. It’s always a good weather day in Vancouver when you can actually see the mountains but this recent weather has been something else. Apparently Vancouver is set to break a 60-year-old record for most consecutive days of sunshine and it’s looking very likely that it will have had no rain for the whole month of July. So we head out to Cypress Mountain and hike up Black Mountain. At an elevation gain of 360m it isn’t quite Grouse Grind but it’s a bit longer at 5.1km. It’s beautiful at the top as not only do you get ... read more

Boo hoo. We are on a Canada Air flight at 6.30 tonight. But only boo hoo because we are leaving such wonderful hosts. Gill and Rob as usual couldn't do enough for us and we feel truly spoilt. Over the last couple of days we have been out and about but I've been a bit of a dampener as I've picked up a cold bug and you know what men are reputedly like when they get a cold - amazingly resilient and uncomplaining. The weather continues to set records for sunshine - we have struck it lucky for sure especially when we look at the weather forecasts for the homeland. But we're not gloating you know; sunburn can be very painful. What we've been doing: having a Mexican brunch with friends of Gill and Rob's in ... read more

July 29, 2013 Monday morning and Steve is working in the little office off of the kitchen, putting in his couple of hours a day; Sam is writing up about Helium in his long term assignment to cover all the elements in the periodic table and Matthew is presently working on Place Value in Maths. We’ll be picking up our car later on and are hoping to get across to North Van and hike up Grouse Mountain; the infamous Grouse Grind. Yesterday we hopped on the skytrain just outside the apartment for just a couple of stops to the Waterfront and then caught the seabus across to Lonsdale Quay. Enjoyed delicious sushi while listening to a Mexican band in the beautiful hot sun before returning on the seabus where we walked down Robson and back into ... read more

We are living in a zoo! So far around the house we have seen a raccoon, seals, minks, cormorants, squirrels, deer. I stretch the truth only slightly - the deer was while out on a bike ride, standing by the side of the bike trail completely unconcerned by sweaty pedallers. While out the other night a neighbour warned us about a cougar that was seen in the street last week. Bears are common but we haven't seen one yet. Oh, and while out kayaking the other day we saw a salmon get caught. At the moment we have crab pots down so I reckon we'll add to the animal count soon. One of the least attractive features of the menagerie is the Canada Geese which decide to start hooting around 4.30 - 5.00 each morning on ... read more

Monday July 8 We decided to take it a slow and calming day. Slept in, had breakfast and chilled around the house backyard, reading, swimming in the pool and relaxing. Kyle did a bunch of errands, he cleaned the basement of his old stuff and did some closet shopping to take new-old clothes to China and he also went to the bank. We had a light dinner and watch a movie at home and crashed for the night. Tuesday July 9 A little information about The Grind in Grouse Mountain, Vancouver. Grouse Grind Region: The North Shore.
