Me and Charles arrived in Calgary yesterday, after a delayed flight (only by half an hour). We managed to take a shuttle bus to the hostel. The hostel is not bad, I guess it quiet similar to most hostels.I have found that its very quiet in Calgary, shops dont' open till 12 on a Sunday. You can move aross the city via these walkways that connect the buildings so you do not need to go out in the cold. Which it is about -5 to -10 in the day, thank god for thremal underware. I am currently in the libary so i cant connect up my digital camera to show you all my photos. So i guess i will have to descirbe the city. It very big, snowey and has lots of generic city skyscrapers. I guess ... read more

Before I came to Calgary, the only reason why I new this city was because of the Olympics. And now I am here, living in a building which was build for the athletes, next to the Olympic Oval, which has the second fastest ice in the world. I must admit that, although I'm Dutch, I'm not that well informed about all the speed skating matches. Imagine my surprise, when I heard the All-round World Championship would be organized in the Olympic Oval, which means almost in my backyard! So of course me and some other internationals bought tickets for the championship. I did expect some other Dutch people to be there too, of course, but what I saw when I entered the Oval was more impressive than I could ever have imagined. So much orange! I ... read more

As we drove to the border of Canada and USA I started having one of those "I can't believe im doing this sort of moments." Driving over the Canada/USA border, light snow falling, I was getting really excited about the next part of our journey. We got to the border control and had to go to the immigration office to get our passports stamped. The woman at the desk was looking really frustrated as she was trying to get information out of a chinese guy who couldn't speak english. It reminded me of my days at monash talking to international students - im so glad i dont have to do that again! She finally gave up on him and we we're next. She wasn't a nice person at all. She asked us where we going and ... read more

So here we are, March 2nd. 5 months and 28 days until we depart. Our plane tickets have been booked, one way from Calgary to Tokyo on August 31st. It's all becoming very real! We had our first appointment at the travel clinic and each received FIVE shots in our arms! We have FIVE remaining appointments. Hopefully the cost isn't too high because I don't have health care benefits to cover them. We are settled in the new house although it doesn't *quite* feel like home since we are packing it all up again in 5 months. I look forward to really turning it into our own place when we return, with paint on the walls and nice artwork. I'm also looking for some inspiration, I want to make one of our bathroom's Asian themed! I'll ... read more

In het kleine centrum is welgeteld 1 straat waar ... read more

So, now it's already weekend again. Time really flies by.. I just don't want to count how many time is still left, it's just too little.. This week was just like most weeks, classes, sports (Actually, I also started playing squash here now, which is a lot of fun!! Ok, after the first time I had such sore muscles that I could barely walk the next day, but it's getting better :)), etc. The movie this Monday was a lot better than the last one, we've seen Kiss kiss bang bang, which I found really great. Wednesday we've been to the Battle of the Bands in Whiskey's, it was really nice to see some live music for a change, and most of the bands weren't bad at all! Thursday the Den, of course after standing in ... read more

So, I think my last story was about Wednesday night. Let's see what else is to tell. Thursday we were supposed to go to HiFi with an entire group, but after waiting in line for half an hour without really approaching the entrance, we decided to go somewhere else. Since many people, including me, were dying to go to the washrooms :), we decided just to go to the club that was the nearest, which was Wiskey's. It was a pleasant surprise to find out it was Ladies night over there, so we girls could get in for free. The less pleasant side effect of this Ladies night (at least, I hope it just had to do with the fact that it was Ladies night, since next week I'll have to go there again ;)) was ... read more

Oopss... Didn't really keep my blog up to date, did I? Ok, a brief review of the last days.. Although.. Maybe I don't have that much interesting stuff to tell you.. Went out this weekend, studied a bit.. Monday I saw March of the penguins on campus, I think it is in the cinema in Holland right now.. It had heard it was supposed to be really good, but personally I found it a bit (okay, very..) boring. It's a documentary about the life of penguins, somehow dramatized, which makes it funnier, but still.. One and a half hour of penguins was just too much for me, half an hour would have been more than enough ;). Wednesday the ISC had organized a Salsa night @ the Den. Although in the end not many people I ... read more

I am flying tomorrow and I still don't have all my stuff packed. It's amazing just how much crap you actually need that you would never be forced to thing of until you leave. About 60% of my backpack is filled with warm clothing to Antarctica. YES, I am a little paranoid about being cold. Other than that, it is my last day at work but it's a fairly realistic assumption to say that this day is useless in terms of productivity. My plane leaves tomorrow at 3:30pm and I still don't know where I am going to sleep in Santiago because I will have a one day layover before heading to the southern tip of Argentina, Ushuaia, to begin my Antarctican Cruise. My mom has bought so many pills and drugs that I feel like ... read more
