To explain... Kari has a friend from Stampede band called Amy who very kindly offered to put us up for a while. Her parents Kathleen and Daryl are so nice and welcoming and are thrilled to have a house full of 'kids'! So for a week or so we're staying with them in South Calgary. The first day we got there we didnt do a whole lot but visit Ikea with Amy (who is refurbishing her boyfriend's room and its going to be awesome!) and sit outside and chat as we threw a ball for the dogs to chase. And drink an entire bottle of wine if you're me (Kat) and Kathy. Lol! The next day we caught the train down to Rope Square to get some free pancakes, watch the entertainment and go square dancing ... read more

Hi guys, It's well and truely stampede time and the bad shirts, hats and facial hair have come out to play! Last night was my first venture into the stampede grounds to watch the chuck wagon races and the 'greatest outdoor show on earth'. It was pretty good fun, albeit a touch on the cheesy side for aboot the first hour. Basically what what I can gather the chuck wagons get millions of dollars in sponsorship to put company names on their little wagons who then chuck a flag in the boot, drive around a couple of barrels, and race around a course with 2 backriders following behind. Basically if you get in the front after the barrels you have to be a dud to lose. After the wagon races they wheel in a massive stage ... read more

This morning we slept in, had a bit of brekkie, and then checked out of SAIT at 11:00. We waited inside the building as it started to absolutely POUR down rain and chatted to some nice people who were also travelling with a "fly by the seat of your pants" attitude. Lora then picked us up and we went to Market Mall for a browse, and headed to Jack Astors for lunch. At Jack Astors they cover the table in a sheet of brown paper, and there is a jar of crayons so you can keep yourself amused while you are waiting. They also had chandeliers made from different glass bottles including Tabasco, Corona and Coke bottles. When we were done with lunch we headed back to Lora's place for a while, and then past Dairy ... read more

A short stay in Calgary! We hit Calgary, Alberta and as we approached we saw the impenetrable fortress that are the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Really, they are just there just daring you to try to get across them! We went up the Calgary Tower to get a better view of them to appreciate their grandeur. And once again I struggled on a glass floor. Heights are still my nemesis! We stayed for a night at Horty's friend's place in the basement. I wish Texas had basements. They make a home much better I think. I'd make my basement a man geek cave! Tomorrow is my last day with Horty though and this fact is making me sad :(... read more

This morning we got up early and caught the C-Train to Stampede Park for Family Day. If you arrived before 9, then there was no gate fee! First thing we did was go into the saddledome to get some Tim Hortons, and then watch the sheepdog trials. And were those dogs awesome, or what! After the dog trials, we watched a bit of the blacksmithing finals, before heading back to see the Stampede Showband perform on the steps of the Saddledome. When we were done there, we headed across to a nice grassy area to eat our packed lunches, before catching the end of the World Cup finals - with Italy winning in a penalty shootout! We then stayed in the Bell-X arena for a BMX and skateboarding show, before heading across to get a seat ... read more

Okey dokey so we got up on Saturday and headed on down to this park downtown which in honour of the Stampede has an area called "Rope Square" where they have all sorts of things going on for the 10 days of the Stampede. We lined up and got some free pancakes and bacon and got tickets for this free buggy ride around Calgary. Man was that fun... a wheel came loose and we nearly had to get off the cart, and then our horses spooked and nearly tipped the cart over, but in the end we survived and it was exciting at least! After the tour we headed in to do some square dancing! Voulenteers put on a dancing display for a few hours each day and they call members of the crowd in to ... read more

After the parade we had our packed lunches in Prince's Island Park, got icecream at the little swimming area for kiddies near the Eau Claire shopping centre, visited a "trendy" little place called Kensington (which was a fair bloody walk but well worth it just for a look around), hid out in the largest indoor garden in Alberta for a while and hit up a brewery called "Brewsters" for a well deserved pint of speciality beer (which might i add was still $4.80 in happy hour!). ... read more

We had to get up REALLY early to ensure we got a good spot to watch the stampede parade so we were ready and downtown well before 7am! We got some awesome spots on 6th Avenue (on the parade route) and settled in for some entertainment. Jase went to get timbits and didnt get back for a good 45 minutes it was that busy! There was some pre-parade entertainment which wasnt all that fantastic, but... well... entertaining at least and at 9am the parade began! Some of the parade entries were awesome! (hence the MILLIONS of photos in this blog entry) and it was all over in just over 2 hours. The morning started off FREEZING and I (Kat) had my legs wrapped in newspaper to keep warm (how hobo of me, but shut up, it ... read more
