I have taken time to reflect on what I have done and where I have been this summer. Some memories seem to be embedded and reappear regularly, while others return involuntarily, in short flashes. It is all part of my story and I want to put it down before I forget too much. Recently, I was asked to try to sum up, in one or two words, my feelings on the trip as a whole. That stymied me for a minute, but then I realized what it is - accomplished. I accomplished my goal of travelling by motorcycle across the country and back, but I also accomplished six weeks of learning about our country and our neighbours. I saw the beauty as well some of the ugliness of this continent, but have come away with the ... read more

Flip a coin. If its heads I'll jump a flight to LAX and get my butt home in time for GF day... Tails says I stick around to see a little snow, skiing, and the Flames go at it... Not sure what to do. I have had a fantastic time and it seems a shame to 'cut and run' when there is still so much to see and do. But at the same time finding a job I would actually enjoy & that I'm qualified for is proving elusive. Spent an enjoyable morning with the folks at Canadian Immigration today, the conclusion reached is that I would be more than welcome to teach here in around 4 months after medicals, police checks and paper work have been approved. Yeah, cheers guys. Basically I can't work ... read more

We got up at 3:45am (our earliest morning yet!) to catch our 6:45am flight our of San Jose. We had heard the night before that airport security through the US had been beefed up. They were so strict that you could no longer take onboard and kind of liquid or gel. On our stopover in Houston, we had our bags searched and Trish was told that she was allowed her lip-balm because it was the stick kind - if it had been a gel it would have been confiscated. In Houston, I took advantage of the ridiculously huge meal portion sizes and ordered a baked potato the size of my head, covered with butter, sour cream, green onions, cheese and beef - just delicious! It was probably one of the best meals of the entire trip. ... read more

We flew from Montreal to Calgary on Thurs 10th August and awoke at 5.30am to the news of the arrests in the UK of terrorist suspects. Even though we were flying internally it still sent a chill down your spine. We arrived at the airport expecting to have all lipsticks, hair gels etc taken from us (a woman's worst nightmare!) but only had to get rid of bottles of SOFT (!!) drink we were carrying. After 4 hours in the air we touched down at Calagary Airport and went to pick up our new hire car, a lovely grey ford focus estate! After a minor detour, we arrived at the hotel Delta Bow Valley over looking the river Bow and near to Louise Bridge (which we didn't see). Still on the trail for info about Geoff ... read more

Odometer: 43215 km The day started with a promise of reaching Calgary today, but also the promise of some rain on the way. I left Regina by 7am and had breakfast in Moose Jaw. The weather at this point was perfect for riding, but the sky in the west was threatening so I put on my rain gear in anticipation. I wasn’t disappointed. I hoped I could ride through the wet, but the lightning started and when a strike on a hill across the valley beside me resulted in an instant crash of thunder, I sought refuge in a little restaurant at Chaplin. Some of the community was in for their morning break and I invited myself to join a farmer that was sitting on his own. He wasn’t critical of my dripping clothes. I never ... read more

The four of us headed off to Calgary early in the morning with Calaway Park as our first destination. This outside amusement park is about 10km from the city and we arrived early in the day to take in all it had to offer. The kids went on most of the rides (there are about 30 rides in total). The wonderful thing is that when I was about my daughter's age, my dad took me and my brother to Calaway Park so it was wonderful to share this with my daugher! As the park is not really that big, we headed off to our hotel with a pool and waterslide. Upon arrival, it was one diappointment after the other! I actually wrote a list so I would not forget! It started with: the alarm clark didn't ... read more

Didn't get into too much trouble over the weekend. Didn't really do very much at all actually. Got my hair cut on Sat. Laura and Paul arrived back in Calgary after a 14 hour marathon from Helsinki. We left Ed and Lil at the Frankfurt airport, with hopes that they would be able to find their way to the train station and get seats to Bonn. Bonn is where their friend Margit lives. They are visiting her and will come back in a few days from now. After we get over the ten hour time difference we will be back to our lives as before. We will talk to most of you soon. We got up at 8.00, showered and packed, then went for breakfast. We'd spotted a likely place the night before, just up from the hotel and when we got there it was just as we'd hoped - good coffee and a range of breakfasts. Sadly, they were out of Granola (I'd had a craving) so we went for fruit salad and yoghurt which, with some additional honey, was delicious. Once sated we wandered a few blocks to the Calgary Tower, a clear landmark from anywhere in or around the city. We had a two for one voucher, which was pleasing, and quickly headed up to the observation deck via the ultra-speedy lift. From the top the vastness of the Canadian plains was visible, with the Rockies edging the view to the west. It was exciting to ... read more
