We only managed to get the hostel beds for one night, so after some ringing around it was off to SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology). The campus was empty (almost) because of the summer holidays, so we got a room in the student residences. It was like a little apartment with a bedroom, bathroom and dining/kitchen/living room. (Strangely enough neither of us took any photos of this place!) The day we checked out of the hostel we did some exploring and encountered a lady doing some kind of aerobics/dance/absailing thing off the side of a building... and that's about all that was exciting that day... so here's the picture...... read more

Because of some complications with Lora's family and such we had to find a new place to stay in a hurry. Luckily we got a bed at the International Hostel in Calgary and to get there from Lora's place we had our first encounter with the Calgary public transit system! Luckily (again) for us it wasnt hard in the slightest to make our way down there (excluding of course the fact we were both lumbered with 15kg packs, daypacks and some grocery bags!) and we checked in to the hostel no worries. It was a really nice place, with really helpful staff and we explored the city a little before having some dinner at A&W (a burger place) and settling in for some tv and chatting to other hostel-stayers... which strangely enough were about 80% Aussies! ... read more

July 1st is CANADA DAY! How lucky were we to be here for this! Just like Australia Day, some people here went nuts for Canada day, and some didnt do much at all. Those who seemed the most patriotic had Canadian car flags, flags out the front of their houses, red and white clothes and honked their horns loud when anyone walked past them! We were more subdued. We had a bbq lunch (with some FANTASTIC Alberta Beef) and a special Canada Day cake that we Aussies helped Bev make. (see photos) After some serious lazing around / digesting time, we drove out to High River to see some fireworks! Then after some lazing around at Bryce's house and some serious trouble with Lora's car and some phone calls and some more lazing around we found ... read more

Happy Canada Day everyone!! Well today is when it starts getting serious, time to start packing and boxing up my belongings for storage. Just for those who do not know I am flying to China on July 4, though from there I truly have no idea, though definately Pakistan is on the list. This journey will take roughly two and a half months being back for my last semester at University on Sept 18. So far all I have is some badly printed maps, a few suggestions on how to get into pakistan and a first aid kit...., passport and multi-entry chinese visa of course. To sum it up I don't even have a backpack yet for this journey nor any place to stay once I arrive in Beijing. ... read more

This particular wednesday we decided to go for the 1 1/2 hr drive to Drumheller - a small-ish town where a lot of dinosaurs have been found. So we piled into the car with Lora and her dad Bob and went out there. On the way we stopped at Horseshoe Canyon, and it was incredible to see the insanely flat landscape suddenly give way to a canyon! Apparently the canyon was formed by glaciers, and lots of dinosaur bones could be found in the canyon. It was such a hot day, that as soon as we stepped out of the air-conditioned comfort of the car the hot humid air hit us so hard it was hard to breathe! We had a look through the dinosaur museum and had a pasta lunch at Boston Pizza (pasta at ... read more

Hi guys, How doin, Yes it has been a while in between blogs, but with good reason, the weather has been far to good to be inside! Geez its warm aye, high 20's-low 30's all week, we are doin it tough (-; Busy couple of weeks in cow gary, big couple coming up! Stampede starts July 7th and runs for 10 days straight. It is the biggest rodeo in the world (apparently) and the cities population will swell to ridiculous numbers. People literally stay at Hotels in Edmonton to come to the Calgary stampede. Should be off to watch some Chuck wagon races, bull riding etc which will be fun. Have played a couple more games of cricket, both good wins for the team. Nothing more to be said about that, I mean come on, Rhonda ... read more

This marks the ending of another summer in Calgary and the beginning of a summer overseas. I must admit, I'm a little bit anxious to go to Hong Kong by myself. I don't think I've ever been anywhere by myself other than exploring Calgary and even that has limitations. It should be interesting. So, where am I going and why am I going there? I'm going to Hong Kong and Beijing for 6 weeks total with the Hong Kong Poly U Summer School and I'll be taking a course on Chinese language, history and culture. (That should be a sure fire A+ right? Let's cross our fingers). After that, I will be spending 4 weeks travelling to the Yunnan and Guangdong Province, at times as an independent traveller, at other times with a tour group. That's ... read more

Ok, so today we woke up early (a whole 9am-ish!) and went to Bev's (that's Lora's Mum) school for SPORTS DAY! Basically because its the last week of the school year over here, they have a whole afternoon of outdoor games. The kids are divided into two teams within their classes and move around on a circuit of games and activities run by parents. Apparently "4/5 Hall-Zerebecki" was really excited to meet us, they were REALLY keen for us to join in, and we got a flag and some pins from them! We had some lunch with them (grilled hotdogs) and well... we'll let the photos speak for themselves! All in all it was a great day! Exhausting but great!... read more
