So far the weather forecast had been pretty accurate. And indeed we awoke to find we were traveling in snow flurries as predicted by the weather forecast. For breakfast I had a 79c (all you can drink) coffee (so good) and a 99c processed bacon and egg muffin (hmmm). America has the cheap hookups! Driving through central Montana was interesting. The road had not been graded so we treaded carefully on the snowy slushy road. The trip included more prairies and rather flat straight highway. We pulled over briefly to photograph a windmill farm. At the border to my dismay, I discovered that I had to pay excess tax on my camera. Oh well I guess these situations make you all the more wiser about traveling. We tiredly trouped back to Calgary. Ahoy! I figured I should at least write something in here for the time being. I'll start by introducing myself. My name is Gnomie (grumbles here. what kind of name is that?!) and as you may have noticed, I'm a garden gnome. Now now, I know what you're saying, Garden gnomes dont keep blogs. But what else are we supposed to do in the dead of a Canadian winter huh? Have you ever tried gardening in 3 feet of snow? Well, anyway... So here I was just a minding my own business when my lovely, if slightly dim witted, human companion tells me we are going to Australia! Imagine that, a gnome like me in Australia. Ma would be proud. The only problem is, we aren't leaving until April. Sheesh. She gets my hopes all up, ... read more

I'm here in Calgary, the first leg of my Alberta trip, to visit the sites and meet with my cousin before heading off into the mountains right next door to hopefully get lost. Ah Calgary, home of tasty dead animal meals such as bison, elk and yummy moo cow. Land of the Canadian cowboy, crazy right wing oil tycoons, and not as cheap as you might think goods. I swear Nova Scotia has cheaper everything, from booze to food. Sure the gas is low priced and there isn't as much tax, but damn, 10 bucks more for a bottle of rum? Where was I now...oh yes, the food. The Bison, or Buffalo, is a strangly cute and furry lump of an animal that makes a very tasty burger as I experienced in a brewary pub called ... read more

I am taking the chance and following the voices that call me to distant places. A new adventure, my life on my back, and my inanimate travel buddie, I am almost ready to head out. So I finally packed my pack. It is pretty full and I will have to repack it about 5 more times to get it right. I do have everything in it I want to take, but chances are there are a few things I don’t need to take and can live with out. I don’t think I really need that 6 pairs of pants, and 12 tops. I am headed to the beach so it should be filled with bikinis and suntan lotion, what else do I really need? I thank Lindsey and Mike for opening up their home to Misha ... read more

Geo: 51.0197, -115.547Woke up, ate breakfast, and was off to the airport ... sigh .... it's all over today! Nooooooooooo!!!! I remembered the pathetic meal on the flight to London, so I grabbed a sausage roll at the tube station ... sigh ... rode the Gatwick Express train to the airport. I wrote in my journal a little bit, but it was difficult, as all of my inspiration seemed to have evaporated ... sigh ....Went through the very busy security check at Gatwick. All liquids (including water bottles) had to be thrown out. The line seemingly stretched on forever. It seemed so wrong ... waiting so long ... and for what? To go home and leave behind this glorious continent??? Why? Secretly, I hoped that there would be a security breach, and that they would shut ... read more

Hello again. We arrived back home on Sunday night in Calgary after a few more whirlwind days in France. On Thursday, we had our second Paris museum day. We checked out Saint Chappelle church which is another Gothic cathedral with soaring stained glass windows that is just a few blocks from Notre Dame. We hit the metro again and went to the Picasso Museum and the Centre Pompidou which was closed because of a union strike. So we couldn't go in and ride on the famous escalator but it wasn't too much of a loss. After that, we went to the Institute de Monde Arab which is a really funky building of modern Middle Eastern architecture with a museum of ancient Arab history inside. On Friday, we got on the train to Caen to visit the ... read more

I've had a request from Poppa Brooks to include some photos and a description of what exactly we're driving around. Here's the deal. We're driving a 2002 GMC Sierra with a Duramax turbo diesel engine and Allison transmission. I don't really know what that all means, but it sounds impressive. When travelling, we've got a mobile office set up complete with a digital camera and camcorder, laptob, blackberry, and Kodak photo printer (which is currently on the fritz). We've got all of our personal stuff stuffed in the back seat of the truck. On the covered flatbed of the truck we have a DeWalt gas generator that we use to run the Shave lab when there is no hydro available. We also keep miscellaneous items needed for the set up of the shave lab in the ... read more

So, why am I going travelling, you ask? I've got nothing keeping me here. I woke up one day and realized that my life, at the moment, is boring. After a particularly stressful weekend, hosting what seemed to be an ungrateful friend, I called my mom during a panic attack. My mom managed to calm me down, and suggested that I go stay with her for awhile. I thought about it, but decided I couldn't. I had too much to leave. And then, I spent an entire week not talking to any friends or family, cuz everyone else was too busy. And I started to ask myself 'What the hell am I staying here for?' When I got right down to it...there was only one reason that I didn't want to leave Calgary. The reason was ... read more
