Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice August 18th 1990

The train was so late arriving at the Italian border that they refused to let it continue. Who the hell are they to criticise? We all had to pile off the train and wait for a connecting train to Venice. What arrived was a standard commuter train, which was full before we all got on it. This confused me as, according to my diary, it was a Saturday. As-per-usual, all the Italians were immaculate, and they were very unimpressed by all us scruffy (and by this point probably very smelly) Inter-railers. It was all right for them, as they hadn't just spent the night in the corridor of a grotty Yugoslavian train. Mind you, knowing the Italians, they would still look pristine. Some pratt in an army uniform was obviously taking the mickey, much to the ... read more

Slept in the corridor again until we all had to get off the train for three hours to go through that border routine again, although it didn't cost of £5 to get out. Back in Greece, the hatred from the locals became evident again and we had to continuously defend our seats from Greeks who thought they had more right to them. One bloke even started to throw all our luggage out of the compartment and things got very ugly when we did the same with his. The guard came to try and sort things out, but he instantly took the Greek’s side and we had to leave in a barrage of abuse. There was a guy in the carriage that was the most intelligent person I had ever met. After all the excitement, he got ... read more

Europe » Greece » Thrace » Alexandroupoli August 13th 1990

"Where the hell is Alexandroupoli?" I hear you ask, "and why would anyone want to go there?" I haven't got a clue and they wouldn't, but we had to change trains there. Of course our train was late arriving. Our connecting train had, presumably, also been late, but would have made sure that it had left before we arrived, so we had to spend a day in this armpit of a place. We went for something to eat. The prices advertised were not what we were charged and we had to get in a huge argument with the guy in charge who, like everyone, hated tourists. We couldn't fault the quality of his food however. We found the sea, planning on a swim, but with all the pollution floating in the water, a swim was out ... read more

Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens August 12th 1990

There was absolutely no tourist information in Athens, and you were basically left to wander around lost. The Acropolis is, fortunately, on top of a hill so you can eventually spot it and then head in that direction. It cost an absolute fortune to get in and it wasn't worth it. Mind you, it would have been a waste to go to Athens and not go in as there was nothing else of the same standard to see elsewhere. I was also a bit gutted, as this was the first time that someone rejected my long-expired international Student Union card. I should have got one of the fakes in Bangkok. Wandering around the Acropolis, I met the two guys that I’d been playing cards with the night before. They were also questioning the logic of travelling ... read more

Europe » Greece » Ionian Islands » Corfu August 11th 1990

The port was a lot further than I had remembered it in the taxi. Not only that, but all the signs were in the cryptic Greek giberish and I was never entirely sure whether I was going in the right direction. It wasn't long, however, until some Greek blokes on mopeds took pity on me and gave me a lift. My backpack made it very unsteady, but any worry about that was more than made up for by gratitude for the lift. Not that it mattered any more, but I was on the right road. I should have had more faith in my natural sense of direction, although it has let me down frequently and it was probably more luck than judgement. The port was lined with sleeping back-packers, so I find a space and joined ... read more

Europe » Greece » Ionian Islands » Corfu August 10th 1990

The boat was a much smother ride than the trains, it was cooler and there was a lot more room. Consequently, I had the best night's sleep that I'd had in ages. I woke up briefly at exactly the right moment to see the sun rising, and then the next thing I remembered was the announcement that we were arriving at Corfu. The boat had showers, so by the time we got to shore, I was quite refreshed. The boat was met by loads of people flogging their accommodation, which was nice considering that up to now, we'd had to hunt high and low for somewhere. Monica, one of the Finish girls, had been raving about Pelekas, a particular village that she had been to, but there was no accommodation from there on offer. Against our ... read more

Europe » Italy » Apulia » Brindisi August 9th 1990

On the train south to Brindisi, I met four people from Finland - two blokes and two girls - who were heading for Corfu and let me tag along with them. When we arrived, it was some time before the ferry left, so we all got the bus to the beach to catch some rays. This also gave me a good chance to dry those clothes that I had washed in Florence. The Finish girls weren’t shy and they had their tops off before we had even sat down. We got on the ferry about three hours before it was due to leave, which was handy as it soon got very crowded. It cost extra to be allowed to sleep in the boat, so we all ended up on the top deck. It was actually very ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome August 8th 1990

During the last night in Florence, it poured with rain. This made things a bit cramped, as we all had to move away from the outside edges of the covered areas to avoid getting wet. All the washing that I had hung out to dry was now soaking, but I had to just stuff it in a bag with no idea how and when I was going to be able to get it all dry now. I dismissed any ideas of hanging it out of a train window. I got up early and headed for Rome. This time, when I arrived, I was not in desperate need of a shower as I’d had one at the campsite before I left. Albeit an extremely cold one. I set straight off for the Vatican, which I had missed ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Pisa August 7th 1990

The train to Pisa was only an hour or so from Florence so I was able to go there for an afternoon and then go back and take advantage of the free campsite again. Once there I needed to get a bus to where the leaning tower was. No problems working out which bus to get, just follow the crowds. Pisa only has its one tourist attraction, but there were enough people there to fill an entire city. Getting a glance at the tower was next to impossible, let alone a photograph that didn’t have the back of someone’s head in. I persisted. There were also a couple of large church buildings on the same site, which were worth looking round, and were in the same style as the tower. Someone who had been inter-railing a ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence August 6th 1990

The train arrived at Florence at five in the morning, so everyone piled onto the platform for a couple hours extra sleep. Some security guards decided to wake everyone up an hour or so later and then they walked off and let us all go back to sleep again. That’s obviously how they keep themselves entertained when things get a bit dull. Bastards, but at least they were not in the league of the Gestapo on the train to Lisbon. We all awoke to discover that we were not in fact in the central Florence station but in some obscure little place just outside. It was a while before a train arrived to take us all into town. Florence is a fantastic place to wander round, but the greatest attraction is for the art, being the ... read more
