Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Figline Valdarno July 24th 1993

On even years our summers were dominated by home leave back in the States. Odd years we spent our summers exploring Europe. Two years earlier, from 10 -25 August 1991, we had visited Berlin and Dresden in former East Germany; Prague, Czech Republic; Bratislava, Slovakia; and Budapest, Hungary just before the end of the Soviet Union. The last time we had been south to Switzerland and Italy was the Spring of 1989, before Will was born and the girls were too young to remember the vacation. Now that he was almost four, the kids were now old enough to understand and enjoy their travels. My Canadian colleague at NATO recommended a villa in Tuscany that he and his wife and many from his delegation had stayed at on previous vacations. So we booked an apartment in ... read more

Europe » Germany » Hesse » Frankfurt July 9th 1993

I have been to Germany several time and found some of the most interesting places to visit. The people there, for the most part, are very nice. As long as you try to speak the language, you will do fine and the locals don't mind if you make a mistake in your attempts. As long as you try! Some of my greatest memories of my travels have been in Germany. Germany, like many European countries, is a cross between the old country and the new all rolled into one. Something that most people don't know when traveling to Germany, is that in the southern part of the country they speak a different dialect then from the middle and north or even east and west for that matter. But again as long as you try, you’ll do ... read more

Europe » Germany » Rhineland-Palatinate » Bad Salzig June 13th 1993

My first foreign trip was a school trip, after years of only doing UK trips to see usually relatives and often in Scotland this was by comparison very exciting. Bus from Banchory to Hull then the 'Norsun' ferry over to Rotterdamn. Drove thorugh Holland and deep into Germany to town of Bad Salzig on the banks of the Rhine. Included cruises on the Rhine and a trip to Phantasialand. It would be a decade before I made another foreign trip but at least I got to leave the UK and get a bit of a feel for a different culture.... read more

Europe » France » Pays-de-la-Loire June 11th 1993

The day after school was out we went on the first of two summer vacations...this one to the French Atlantic Coast. Staying at hotels with three kids was turning out to be quite expensive as hotels charged by the bed rather than by the room. We learned about Pierre et Vacnaces, a resort company similar to Club Med, but without the food, thus costing much less. So we decided to reserve a room at the Port Bourgenay Pierre et Vacances resort at the Vendee region of France. It turned out to be a great place, and we would stay at another Pierre et Vacances resort on the French Riviera in April 1995. 11 June 1993 Friday. We left early from our home in Overijse, Belgium and three hours later were checking into the Sequoia Lodge at ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Brussels-Capital Region » Brussels June 4th 1993

In June of 1993, I took my first trip outside of America. It all came about like this. I had acquired a pass through work on Sabena Airlines to Brussels from any US gateway. All I had to do was pay a whopping $12 tax and we would be on our way. The pass was for two people so I invited one of my fellow workers named George. This would be the first of many trips with George. I had not even been working at the airline for a year, but I was already beginning to love this job!! On the evening of June 4, we took a red eye flight from Las Vegas to Atlanta. It was Delta 786, which was a 757 aircraft. We were seated up front in first class and I had ... read more
