Europe » Austria » Salzburg » Salzburg August 5th 1990

The train was passing through Salzburg, but not terminating there so we had to be careful to make sure that we woke up in time. We didn’t, but luckily the train was running late and we hadn’t missed our stop. The train still arrived at some ungodly hour in the morning, so everyone settled down in the station for another kip until the sun came up. The station was literally covered with inter-railers. Salzburg was a beautiful city, set in the heart of the beautiful Austrian countryside. Like Vienna, there were photo opportunities everywhere. The dominant feature in the city is a large castle on top of a huge hill. We were too tight to pay for the cable car, which would take you all the way up to the castle, so we had to walk. ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna » Vienna August 4th 1990

Vienna was a good night's sleep away, so that was our next destination. We had to share the compartment on the train with two Japanese guys, which made it very cramped. On the assumption that they couldn't understand, we shared stories about life at college, which consisted mainly of drunken depravity and sexual conquest. When we all got off the train the following morning, they happily grinned at us and said "Goodbye" in perfect English! First order of the day was to get some local currency. We were all very bitter and twisted when it cost us £2 to change a £10 travellers cheque. I think that if any of the Euro-sceptics in our political parties were to go inter-railing, they would soon be in favour of European monetary union. Bloody pain in the backside changing ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice August 3rd 1990

Italian trains may always run late, but this is easily forgiven when you discover that all the seats in a compartment fold down to form one big bed. There were five of us in the carriage, which was a bit cramped, but a good nights sleep was had by all nonetheless. We woke in the morning to discover that the girl nearest the door's money belt had been opened and searched. Some money and a credit card were missing, but luckily her passport, travellers cheques and Inter-rail ticket were still there. We had been warned that Italian trains are rampant with crime, but we were still a bit shocked. There were some seedy looking characters milling around in the corridor and we felt like beating them up and checking their pockets, but we were lacking a ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome August 2nd 1990

I don't know why the Italians bother with time tables, as they have absolutely no intention of following them. The train to Rome left late and arrived having lost even more time on the way. I arrived in Rome after getting a longer night’s sleep than I had suspected, but after several days travelling, I could kill for a shower. I decided to check out the facilities at the station and there were some showers, but it would cost me £3.50. As I was used to spending little more than that for a full night’s accommodation, I decided to go in search of a room. Absolutely no chance - everywhere was full to overflowing long before I arrived. Seriously running out of motivation, I decided to go and do the tourist bit anyway. After a fairly ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Lyon August 1st 1990

I was planning on heading for Italy, but the next train along the southern coast was not leaving for another seven hours. It was quicker for me to travel overnight back up to Paris and then down to Italy from there; so back to Paris it was, with no supplements, no reservations and no Nazi security guards to worry about. Bliss. Those evils of seat reservations and supplements reared their ugly heads again at the Gar de Lyon as most of the trains heading south were of the high-speed TGV variety. Fair do's to the French however, as I think that it is quite reasonable to expect to pay a supplement to travel on the fastest train service in the world, and the requirement was very well advertised on the departures board. It wasn't long before ... read more

Europe » Spain » District of Madrid » Madrid July 31st 1990

I arrived back in Madrid in the early hours, but the next train to France was not leaving until 3.30 in the afternoon. There was no real incentive to leave the station and venture into the city, so I stayed, playing cards and talking to an American girl whom I had met on the train. She had come to Europe to travel with her boyfriend, but had promptly dumped him the moment they arrived. I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the poor guy. They had arranged to meet in Amsterdam and she was on her way there now, despite the fact that she claimed she had fallen in love with some waste-of-space Dutch hippy. She was also running a couple of days late, and I’d be very surprised if he was still waiting when she ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Lisbon & Tagus Valley » Lisbon July 30th 1990

Alan and Richard were planning on going on to Morocco and they had had some jabs before they left England. I had not, so I decided not to risk going with them. So off they went, leaving me sad and lonely again, with a couple of hours to kill before the next train left for France. To avoid a repeat of that hellish journey, I decided to get into the queue to make a seat reservation. After a long wait, I discovered that there was a supplement payable to travel on this train. Since I had not got any change, I was forced to get in another queue for the currency exchange, just before the guy behind the counter decided to leave and help one of his mates for half an hour. Back in the reservations ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Lisbon & Tagus Valley » Lisbon July 29th 1990

Upon arrival, first priority was again to find somewhere to stay. It didn’t take long to discover that our books that were supposed to be up-to-date weren’t. The first hostel didn’t exist, the second had hiked up their prices to out of our range and the third, the YHA for which there were accurate directions, was full. As they had done in Paris, they found us somewhere else. This looked like it could have been a brothel, but we were grateful for anywhere. We set off to try and find a beach, just to discover that the nearest one of any quality was a half-hour train ride away. We went back to the hostel to get our Inter-rail tickets, just to discover that it was locked. Depressed, we spent the rest of the day checking out ... read more

Europe » Spain » District of Madrid » Madrid July 28th 1990

Another night on a train, but this was a little more comfortable as the luggage racks and seats doubled-up as what were actually quite comfortable beds. Upon arrival in Madrid, we went for a much-needed shave and freshen up, which went some way to help us get over two nights of sleeping on trains. The underground system in Madrid was absolutely immaculate, coming only a close second to the one in Singapore (but without all the threats of fines). We got a ten-ticket pack between us and set off to see the sites. We found Madrid very uninspiring, so we ended up looking for something else to do. After a quick check in our books, we decided to travel out to a nearby town called Toledo. Allan and I did return here again several years later ... read more

Europe » Spain » Basque Country » San Sebastián July 27th 1990

That night was the first of many on trains, giving us a taste of what was to come. The train terminated at Irum on the boarder with Spain. After going through a pitiful excuse for a customs office, where you were required just to flash something that vaguely resembled a passport, we caught a 'bone-shaker' train the short way to San Sebastian. We first walked into town to get some money, although we had to wait in a square for an hour until the bank opened. My credit card would not authorise for some reason, which was very, very worrying as that was supposed to be keeping me alive for the next month. Spent a relaxing day slobbing on the beach catching some long missed rays. At least we did until early in the afternoon when ... read more
