Rain accompanies me on my journey from Exeter to the Dartmoor. First I take a little coastal detour to Dawlish where a cottage pie is devoured for Lunch. The village of Chudleigh, located near the perimeter of the Dartmoor is considered worthy of exploration. Located in southern Devon the Dartmoor covers 950 sq kms. It is noted for tors, which are large hills topped with outcrops of bedrock. Observing from the top of one of these tors the Dartmoor appears to have two types of surface. One surface is wilderness while the another is farming fields which appear to be separated by hedges. On closer inspection the hedges are heath bounded roads. Some have trees with over arching branches which enclose the road. Many villages within the Dartmoor are built of stone. An example is Wildcombe-in-the-Moor. ... read more

Picking up a hire car and I head east, out of London towards Leeds Castlein Kent. Set on two islands on the River Len, it was built by King Henry I in 1119. Partly because it was away from the plague which effected coastal areas,it was a favourite of King Henry VIII. Until 1947 it was used as a private home by its last owner Lady Baillie, who bought it in 1926. Parts are decorated with furniture from the Victorian era to the 1920 - 30s. One room houses a 16th century panel. When the panel was found to be to large to install, Lady Baillie had the room knocked down and enlarged so that it could be fitted. Other rooms were restored with Henry VIII period furniture. There is also a wine cellar which is ... read more

I arrived to a grey drizzling London. Intially I had no idea of where I should head to but took a top deck bus and ended up in Victoria Station. Why I went there I dont really know, maybe I was guided by a hidden hand. But it seemed the right place to be, heaps of information about accomodation, tours, resturants and general London sites. Of course like most aussies I end up in a hostel in Earls Court. In an attempt to delay sleep until the London night I took a walk and ended up at Buckingham Palace. But as there was not much occurring I went back to the hostel and crashed into a deep sleep. Next morning, I felt fine and walked to Westminster Abbey via Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park. Park, it ... read more

We delayed our traditional Easter vacation because Buz and Kathy were going to visit us in May. We hadn't had a vacation since the previous August, aside from the short trip with my Mom and aunts to Bavaria after Christmas. So we were more than ready to hit the road. 11 May 1991 Saturday. We picked up Buz and Kathy at the Brussels Zaventum airport at 8 am, and let them relax for most of the day, other than some local sightseeing later that afternoon. 12 May 1991 Sunday. We drove to Brugge for a quick tour of the town before arriving at Zeebrugge. For the first time we caught the longer ferry ride from Zeebrugge to Felixstowe northwest of London and the nearest port to Constable Country. John Constable lived in the Dedham Vale where ... read more

Geo: 55.8599, -2.82892Trip as 21st bithday present for me with my Mum. Stayed in nice B&B with friendly ex-banker now turned b&b lady. Great city did a lot of shopping & alot of walking Edinburgh is dominated by the castle, perched on a volcanic plug at the top end of the Royal Mile. So we went along the Royal Mile at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official Scottish residence of the Queen. Had look at the the ceremonial apartments and the chambers used by , Mary, Queen of Scots. This long thoroughfare changes its name several times on its way up, from the Esplanade to Castlehill, The Lawnmarket, the High Street and Canongate. The Royal Mile ends at the dramatic Edinburgh Castle, whose royal apartments contain the Scottish crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny & ... read more
