Europe » Czech Republic June 5th 2005

I entered the Czech Republic from Poland. I don’t know what it is, but my Canadian passport freaked out the border guards. They had to take it into the main office and confer with their colleagues. I guess they don’t get many Canadians. Fortunately, I haven’t had any troubles. After a few moments, the passport gets stamped and I’m on my way. Unfortunately, I haven’t been as successful in my money management. I have currencies from five different countries in my wallet. I never seem to spend it all before I’m into another country. It reminds me of the days before the Euro. The Carpathian Mountains are but mere foothills by the time they reach the Czech Republic. They still make for some wonderful motorcycling roads, though. The Czech roads are the best I’ve encountered in ... read more

Up early to go for a walk up to some hills in the Scaramonte area overlooking Granada to take pictures of the Alhambra. On the way there walked through part of the Albayzin area, lots of narrow streets and white houses, like Córdoba's Jewish area, so of course it is really easy to get lost. But got to the lookout points and the views were worth it. On the way back however decided not to walk through the Albayzin so ended up literally walking on a road around the outside of Granada, took a long time to get back to the centre. Got back to the hostel, pretty tired from going to bed at 430am and getting up at about 8am this morning so had a long siesta. After a good sleep went out again around ... read more

June 5th, 6th, and a little bit of 7th, 2005 I had a 48 hour day today, it was nuts! Left Regina at 2:30, arrived in Calgary by 3:40, W-A-I-T-E-D … Then Anne came at 6:40 and we hopped on the plane and took off at around 7:40. We got to London early by about 45 minutes, so the flight took a little over 6 and a half hours. There was very little “night,” as we chased the sun right across the earth, but it was really neat seeing Ireland and England from the sky! We then took a bus from London Heathrow to London Gatwick and w-a-i-t-ed (the flight was one and a half hours late!) … We then flew into Venice and landed at 10:22 pm. When we walked out of the airport, it ... read more

When we were in Amsterdam, the advanced word we kept getting about Athens was Dirty. Dirty, Dirty, DIRTY... I don't mean Jennifer Grey Dirty, or Tonya from Real World/Road Rules Challenge Dirty; I mean more like Manhattan dumpster diving on a muggy summer afternoon Dirty. With that kind of lead in, it was almost inevitable that we would land in Athens on day 5 of a trash workers strike... Yummy... Several times during our (way to brief) 2-day stay, we'd be enjoying a cocktail when the shifting winds would treat us to a nice blast of moldy pita and soggy toilet paper. Honestly though, the smell was about the only complaint I had about Athens. Flush with the pride of hosting an unexpectedly successful Olympic Games, the city was friendly ... read more

As we sit on the fast moving intra-Spain railroad traveling from Madrid to Barcelona, I finally get the opportunity to put down many of my thoughts and feelings that have been building up since our arrival to Spain on Thursday morning. Many of you have probably been hearing about Europe on the news recently (for my opinions check out the other blog, Perlin and Son, at perlinandson.blogspot.com) but this should certainly serve as a different description. This is our first blog from our amazing European adventure and you are reading it so as they say in Spain, Hola. Why blog at all? As someone dear to me recently said, she doesn't like to journal, because the point of writing thoughts down is to have somebody read them, and not to sit in a secret book. In ... read more

Well reality, excitement and fear are slowly kicking in as I have accepted a offer on my house. I am in fear of starting too many plans in earnest as they could always pull out so I hope to exchange contracts and set a date so I still have a base to conduct all the admin I need to do to get going. My biggest outlay will be the course fees and I don't want to pay them If the house does not sell as it is non refundable. I have visa's to sort out kit to buy to travel with shed loads of things to sell here or move into storage somewhere don't know where yet though? Well I am gonna crack on with working earn some more money and wait for this rollercoaster to ... read more

24km - Bolton-on-Swale to Ingleby Cross - A boring day with a lot of road and rain in the Vale of Mowbray, we arrive completely wet through at the Blue Bell Inn, but start cheering up when our boots and socks are lined up drying by the open fire and we have had a couple of Guiness. I nip out shortly before night falls and pitch the tent in record time under the rain. Ying write postcards to her friends back in China, I never get bored of looking at Chinese writing, it looks like magical formulas to my eyes. I just look at the map for tomorrow and hope the weather improves.... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague June 5th 2005

Can you believe these pictures are all taken inside the Prague city limits? Is there any other city where I am within half a mile of a major street and yet feel as if I am standing in the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia? There may be another city with such a vista, but if there is I do not know where it is. Though there is a major street within half a mile of this spot the only sounds heard are the sounds of nature. The Sarka Valley can be seen snaking its way between the two mountains. It was up this valley that the 53rd Russian Tank Division used to hide from the Germans when they liberated Prague. The German plan was to destroy Prague as they retreated from the city. Fortunately the Russians ... read more
