We stayed a day and night in Nice, I was still feeling bad and since I spent almost a week there last year I mostly took it easy and didn't do much at all which was nice for a change. This "vacation" has been going in high-speed so far. Viking and Pri enjoyed the rocky beach and mediterranean water. After getting different messages from everyone we spoke to at the train-station we ended up just jumping on the train w/o booking any seats since the train was full anyway, we did find some seats in a coupé with an australian couple. We almost didn't get a train from Genova where we were to switch since there was some strike going on. Most or all regional trains including ours got cancelled and no ticket offices were open. ... read more

Weather Report Showers during the night. Early morning overcast and quite cool. Remained so until early afternoon when sun appeared and within a couple of hours it was very hot once again. Apparently the Queen was on Islay today. Flew into Port Ellen to board the yacht that she has hired for the summer. Little like me and my car hire ? I saw none of this - I was not in Port Ellen ! Use the i-net in the Service point for an hour and recharged my laptop and camera batteries. Then collected my hire bike (same one as before) and set-off. Headed first for Kilchoman through open moorland arriving just before midday. Little there other than the old parish church which is totally blocked-up. A short walk away I visited a cemetery holding the ... read more

Prague is awesome! What a small place full of history. Honestly, its a nice place but you can easily do everything in a few days since its so small. No one spoke English which made it hard to interact with the place, but it was still amazing!... read more

Camping with Cows in the Swiss Alps After leaving the hustle and bustle of a major city like Paris, during a major holiday like Bastille Day, we were ready for some peace and solitude. What better way to achieve this, than a remote hike & camping in the Swiss Alps? Plus it might ease the budget blowing that was becoming habit. We stopped for a few days in Geneve, France on the border of France and Switzerland (literally on the border, as we could watch the people cross and hear their conversations just outside our window). I won't say much about Geneve, not because there isn't much to recommend this lake-side city, but because we didn't stay long or do much while we were there, other than to plan our next leg. We did rent a ... read more

Wow talk about an embarrasing moment. It's like 30+ degrees here and massive humidity. So i went to take a shower right, took my towel, but not my wallet. Which contained my swipe card for the 'locks as you exit your room' door. After my shower I realised I had no key for my door and noone was in the room. Had to walk down about 50m of corridoors, down a flight of stairs and to the reception wearing just a towel! Reception was packed, had to push through all these ppl to get a 1 time keycard. Nice. Luckily I was laughing the whole way because I've had soo little sleep in the past 80 or so hours that I feel like I'm super high on something. Haha. Awsome. Rack up another travel experience.... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris July 21st 2006

A very late note about the last day of the trip - as I uploaded the pictures ages ago and never wrote the text. We spent the last night in Geneva, and didn't do much except a nice stroll around the tip of the lake, where we enjoyed a small food festival. On Friday morning we checked in the airport just to discover that the connecting flight to Israel was postponed to the middle of the night which meant a very long day in Paris (we flew with Air France through Paris). For me personally it wasn't bad at all - I won a visit in Paris + lunch with my cousin Sharon (that part was planned) + got to see the rest of the family, including my beautiful charming nieces, in the evening. The touristy ... read more

Only a short drive today, which was good after a couple of fuller days. We first visited some basalt columns just off the road. The next stop was a turfed church. Iceland has quite a few turfed roofed buildings - they did it when wood supplies were low. Makes for good photos now! We then arrived into Skaftafell National Park. It houses iceland's largest icecap - Vatnajokull, which makes up 8% of iceland. There are glaciers that form off it, 2 of which come either side of one of the mountains that leads up from the camp site in the national park. We decided to do a 17km mountain walk to get a better view of the icecap and see some of the glaciers. Again, remember I put my walking boots in storage and only had ... read more

... read more

Europe » Ireland July 21st 2006

July 4 to July 21 Stumbling off the ferry from Wales at six am blind with sleep and hunger I fill up on seawater and Irish Brown bread. Tap water so bad and then some of the best bread I've eaten in my life. The ingredients say that half of the bread is made with buttermilk! In my 18 days in Ireland I think its safe to say I ate 18 loaves of this bread, made in heaven I think. My first stop was Jeripoint Abby and the city of Kilkenny for some history. The Abby was manned by two different orders and left very unique limestone carvings of Saints and other religious scenes with tell tale signs for the modern viewer. For instance, if a snake has a knot in its tail, you know that ... read more

Well, other than a flight delay, aeroplane re-routing, bad cold, lost luggage and 35 degree temperature when I'm dressed for -5, my trip from Vancouver to Birmingham went off without a hitch. But here I am at my Aunty's house in Coventry, luggage found and trying to get over the jet lag. My aunty has also kindly taken me around to see some of the Midlands while I'm here - a quick trip around the old and new parts of Coventry, Warwick Castle (supposeldy one of the best in England - it's okay, but a bit kitsch for my liking) and a drive through the Cotswolds which really is just as quaint and twee as the photos make out. Went into London on Thursday to sort out bank accounts and fun stuff like that. The bus ... read more
