July 4 to July 21 Stumbling off the ferry from Wales at six am blind with sleep and hunger I fill up on seawater and Irish Brown bread. Tap water so bad and then some of the best bread I've eaten in my life. The ingredients say that half of the bread is made with buttermilk! In my 18 days in Ireland I think its safe to say I ate 18 loaves of this bread, made in heaven I think. My first stop was Jeripoint Abby and the city of Kilkenny for some history. The Abby was manned by two different orders and left very unique limestone carvings of Saints and other religious scenes with tell tale signs for the modern viewer. For instance, if a snake has a knot in its tail, you know that ... read more

Well, other than a flight delay, aeroplane re-routing, bad cold, lost luggage and 35 degree temperature when I'm dressed for -5, my trip from Vancouver to Birmingham went off without a hitch. But here I am at my Aunty's house in Coventry, luggage found and trying to get over the jet lag. My aunty has also kindly taken me around to see some of the Midlands while I'm here - a quick trip around the old and new parts of Coventry, Warwick Castle (supposeldy one of the best in England - it's okay, but a bit kitsch for my liking) and a drive through the Cotswolds which really is just as quaint and twee as the photos make out. Went into London on Thursday to sort out bank accounts and fun stuff like that. The bus ... read more

Caroline and Margo were chatting in the room next door early in the morning. That was a bit strange to me (for reasons that I can’t fathom) and I woke up with a sneaking suspicion that we were supposed to be somewhere. I had a moment of selflessness the night before and buried my watch underneath some clothes. Along with that moment, I had a lapse in judgement by letting Lisa set her alarm to wake us up half an hour before meeting with Dan at 7:15am. It was seven. I leaned over between the beds and tapped madly on Lisa’s arm. When her eyes eventually opened I pointed to the clock and jump out of bed. Clothes on, out of the room to the wash sink (passed a very bewildered Margo), brushed my teeth, went ... read more

I made the mistake of watching the morning TV news. The weather report promised more record high temperatures all over Europe. Luckily for us Scotland's record high temps would only reach the upper 80's instead of the near 100's further South. Oddly enough as we started loading up on to the bus it was actually a bit nippy outside. Today's itinerary sounded like another winner to me: We would head to the touristy town of Pitlochry, then to Sterling and Sterling Castle, followed by a drive along the Firth of Forth on in to Edinburgh. I was aware of Sterling Castle's role in the whole Braveheart/William Wallace/Robert Bruce era and it was eager to see this area of Scotland which also hosted the battles of Sterling Bridge, Falkirk and Bannockburn. Before the movie Braveheart came out ... read more

Day 76: Friday 21st. July 2006: Misty: We dropped the car off at the ferry and had smooth sailing to Belfast where it was a quick taxi ride to the train to Dublin. Said to the cabbie we would be back in a week and see him then!!!! Arrived in Dublin and walked to the hostel, lugged our cases up all the stairs, packed what we needed for the week into 1 case, then stored the other at the hostel. Took a walk around before settling for the night as we have a big week ahead with a Shamrockers "All Ireland Rocker". Day 77: Saturday 22nd. July: Shamrocker Day 1: Sunny / raining: Well, we're off to see Irelnd. There are 2 other women our age so we don;t feel out of it. Hey! we ... read more

We had a great night's sleep and breakfast across the street was, as they say here, brilliant. We headed out to Urquhart Castle on the banks of Loch Ness after breakfast and checkout. We have no hopes of seeing Nessie...honestly, if all the guys on Nessie tours with fish finders can't find her we're not going to waste our time lol. However, Loch Ness is breathtaking and Urquhart, even half in ruins, is gorgeous. Ali and I, once again, go our separate ways in Urquhart but the way it's set up we can almost always see each other. I got a little bit artistic and tried taking some interesting photos here. I'm not a good photographer but it's hard to take a "bad" picture here. Scotland is so incredibly beautiful. The morning starts out overcast but ... read more

We got up, did our best to cool off in the showers, and packed and headed south... On the map, we had seen this amazing highway built right on an atlantic wall - a huge dike holding back the sea. We didn't realize it was 3 meters below sea level on one side. So driving thru, there was not much to see of the Atlantic ocean on our right (just the wall), but on our left was a huge below-sea-level inland lake/sea! We could have made a stop half-way to climb the wall and have a look at the atlantic, but feeling so hot, we didn't want to stop and walk around in our Draggin' Jeans. We stopped by the city of Delft, famous for its porcelein works, copied (and improved?) from China long ago. In ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice July 21st 2006

Our next challenge was trying to find our place of accommodation in Venezia. Not an easy task as the actual hotel had a different name to what we had been told. After half a day of trying to find it, we finally got rooms with airconditioning - an unusual encounter for us, but one that was greatly appreciated as temperatures were hitting 37C. Anybody walking into the room found me reclined, naked, in front of the airconditioner. I didn’t care about the shrinkage factor, the cooler temperatures were worth the humiliation! Venice itself was gooooorgeous and unique with its waterways and canals, most of which I could get on and to via the vaporettas (water taxis). There were literally tens of thousands of tourists flocking every attraction, the first place for us it has been really ... read more

Avg. temp: 37 degree After a great night, i met up with Hannah around 10:30am and we head to the Gaudi Park. We went to the top of the park to see the view of barcelona. And then to the front of park and the main square. The square is amazing, lately I read the book in the gift shop. He also made a water storage under the square, so that area won't be flooded and can reuse the water for gardening. What a smart guy! We went back to the hostel to take a nap. We (Hannah, me, an italian, a french and a group of 6 german) met again and went to the water fountain in the evening. This is another place that you need to watch your stuff. The guy next to me ... read more

Did some shopping as I was in dire need for some shorts as mine got wrecked in Bruges after sitting on some dubious substance. Found some for 7.50 euro which was quite the bargain so I was rapped. It has been so hot , about 10 degrees above average and eight people have died in France as a result. It is ridiculous that people have died of heat exhaustion in this era. That arvo Cam and I went to the Anne Frank house. It was amazing to see the building the lived in for two years. Ive never seen stairs so steep in my life. It was just a mind boggling experience, and Im glad Id read the book before hand, even all those years ago. Afterwards there was an exhibit on controversial human rights issues ... read more
