Once I had woken up, I cleaned up a bit and then started to walk around the town. I had my trusty map and my sixth sense on high, so I was not getting lost today. And what a journey I had, a marvelous little city, some nice parks, a great city lake with a path that took you all around. And the heat, beautiful. This lasted most of the day, then the clouds came in. I thought to myself, good time to find the museums, and I thought this, and then I kept walking, and it was about that time the hail came, and then the buckets of rain. I found a cafe and drank fanta orange for an hour or so and planned my next few days. The next few days were great fun, ... read more

Not writing this until St. Pete, because I never found time to find an internet cafe until now. No problem taking the morning train to Helsinki. We made it a leisurely morning. Amy went to a designer store for large fashions just down from our hotel, and then we hit the road. At the train station in Helsinki, the first thing we did was buy our train tickets to St. Petersburg. No problem. Caught the tram to our hotel. Made a slick move that slipped and took an extra five minutes to catch the tram (matters with heavy luggage). The hotel we booked (Hilton) was nice. On a small river (many in Helsinki) and close to town/tram line. Spent the rest of the day exploring Helsinki. A pretty town. Nice market by the water where the ... read more

We headed further along the south coast today to stay in a place called Klaustur. Along the way we stopped at a good number of sites. After driving through some little towns and a floodplain we reached Seljalandsfoss waterfall. You can walk behind it (though you get quite wet!), and there are a couple of other waterfalls if you go for a short walk along towards the campsite near it. We scrambled up a mud hill to get to see one of them (My walking boots were in storage, so I was in my trainers with Al holding my hand so I didn't get too scared of falling down the hill...), worth it to get up to see it though. We then carried on in the car to another waterfall - Skogafoss, which is 60m tall. ... read more

When I went to Aiguille du Midi yesterday I bought a 2-day multi-pass for the cable cars around. So today was packed with going up & down the mountains. I decided to do a short hike that started in Plan d'Aiguille, the middle station on the way up. I arrived at 8am, and there were no queues. The sky was perfectly clear and I decided to make another short visit up there. In the morning the lights are different so it's another angle, and anyway it's all breath-taking, so why not see it again? The short hike to Lac Bleu and Mer du Glace was a fine walk with lovely views. I put on my music and enjoyed the morning cool air. Afterwards it became quiet hot - in fact everybody talks here about 'le chaleur': ... read more

On the way down to Groningen, we talked to some mototourists at a gas station and heard that the city of Groningen itself wasn't much, at least not as interesting as the coast, or towns like Sneek (pronounced "Snake"). On hearing that, Zak had a flashback and remembered that Sneek was definitely one of the cities touted on tourist brochures as a beautiful, sporty, trendy, surfing & boating town worth visiting. So to Sneek it was, and we didn't mind adding a couple of hours driving, just so we'd get to a beautiful spot. On arriving in Sneek, we asked around, and were directed to a camping ground called De Domp. But it was no dump - it was gorgeous! It was just before closing time, so it was lucky we made it in. After checking ... read more

Arriving in Nice hoping to get some of what France is famous for, we were slightly disappointed. Instead of culture, art and fantastic food we found bad suntans and department stores. One consolation was the Museu Mattise, but even this couldn't keep us for more than one day so we moved on to Cannes. Still busy with tourists, and only just giving France a good name, we found it would suit us more if we were to visit on a large boat with American Express in our dirty paws. The same feeling came from Monaco, yet it was also fascinating to see, being a self governed monarchy with some very relaxed taxes to keep the rich happy. It was odd to us, especially after coming from Italy, that these three places offered so little in the ... read more

So after our failed attempt at the 'Tour de France' we decided a couple of day trips were in order. So day trip number one was to Anwerp and the other to Brussels. Not much to tell about the trips unfortunatly -- just the standard touring around siteseeing. So this entry is not really going to be a blog but more of a photo gallery with pictures from our day trips (Horta House is the only one from Brussels) and some from when we went to the sea with Leslie and the boys.... read more

The flight from Portugal to London landed me at Luton airport in the late afternoon where I exchanged my Euros for some local British currency. The notes here are ridiculously when I couldn't fit them in my wallet, I thought for a second that I had put them in sideways. My embarrassing wallet situation was eased as I exchanged a few notes for a shuttle bus ride into London's Baker Street station. Pete (who I met on Contiki) picked me up and kindly let me stay at his place. It was great to be around the familiar faces again and to be shown around by some locals. I didn’t want to outstay my welcome so after a few days of bumming I scanned the web for a decent share-house and was lucky enough to find a ... read more

Our holiday started in the world's largest maze - Venice. Some tourists had chosen to get maps, this only made things worse. They were lost, whereas we just didn't know where we were at any given time. We managed to stumble upon most of the the city's treasures including St Marks Square, the Lido and rubbish overpriced tourist restaurants. We left Venice in a hire car and drove into Slovenia through beautiful mountain roads to Lake Bled. Situated just 40 minutes outside of Llubjiana (the capital) is a stunning lake famous for the church located on a little island in the middle. We set up camp at Camp Bled located on the banks of the lake with town a short stroll away. We swam out to the island in the middle of the lake to ring ... read more

Unfortunately for the last few days Lisa has been waking up at 6:30am and it is all my fault. My wristwatch alarm has been permanently locked in at 6:30, well 6:24 but let’s not split hairs. I guess I could have smothered it at the bottom of my backpack but where would the fun be in that? Today was one day I wanted to be up early, voluntarily. Prague in summer is just a step shy of an amusement park during school holidays. The beauty of Charles bridge would be lost in a sea of daypacks and scantily clad tourists drenched in a sticky aura of sweat. Collective sweat when elbow to elbow or in my case elbow to nose, can ruin the most beautiful of travel experiences. No, to be fair, it can ruin anything. ... read more
