02 July 06 Today Jay, Sarah and Sarah's mom (who is here visiting) went to go see the powerhouse falls. In an email that my cousin sent me said we should check it out. He said it was in Wicklow, but I didn't think about Wicklow County. So being the brilliant person that I am we went to the town Wicklow, and found no waterfalls. It was a nice town and all but it was just different from what we were expecting. The falls were actually like an hour away in another part of Wicklow Co. There was ruins of a castle there which was pretty neat. Sarah and her mom left for France and Italy a few days later. It was then Jays turn to leave, however she is not coming back. We didn't say ... read more

Sorry for the delay in posts. We have been in transit for a day and prior to that were lazing in the sun by the river in Cesky Krumlov. We loved Cesky Krumlov, the place wasn't half as busy as Prague and yet had similar things to see and do (ie a castle on the hill, nice river, good food, interesting czechs etc). Our train trip to Budapest was very eventful (unfortunately) as we had a run of bad luck. First, our shuttle was overbooked, and we had to wait over 45 mins for another car to take a couple alongside us to Linz. Then, when we were at the border the Czech's lost Bec's passport (we got it after turning back to the border) and then at the Austrian border they lost a British passport ... read more

Well things here are all wrapped up and I am on the plane moving home! It is hard to believe I made it through a year isn’t it?! Of course I had much support from family and friends, so thank you. Since Ireland I have been on yet another adventure of a lifetime...I am so blessed! My mom and I set off to make our way to the Balkans from Paris and had many incredible experiences along the way….we will see if I can paint any picture of what it was like for you all. Leaving Paris we took the fast train to Nice, France. We loved being by the water and I had the chance to return to savor the Marc Chagall museum again. It was hot but we figured we would be heading into ... read more

Friday morning, I woke up in the apartment in Dubrovnik, screamed in the bathroom as a fuzzy centipede-like creature crawled out of the floor drain, and finished off the rest of my milk and cereal- hooray for cereal! Nikola had been very kind in that he said that he would buy a ticket for the 8:00 am bus to Mostar for me; I could just pay him back. However, as I was finishing my packing, Danijela came in and explained that the bus for Mostar was sold out. Argh! That was OK, she said, Nikola would drive me down there anyway to see if I could squeeze in. Though I was ready at the discussed time, 7:30 am, we didn't leave until after 7:45, when Nikola told me that we also had to pick up a ... read more

The day before, we bought our hydrofoil tickets for roundtrip to Tallinn. It's outside the EU, so we had to go through passport control each way (adding new stamps to the passport -- rare since travel in EU doesn't require). Tallinn is an old medevial town. The old town is basically intact, although some parts were bombed in WWII. We always have thought of it as Soviet, but it was free before WWII (and under Swedish, German and Russian influence in the centuries before). The town and is really more Nordic than Russian, and apparently was happy to reopen interaction with Finland and Sweden, just being a short hop across the Baltic Sea or Gulf of Finland. The old buildings, cobbled streets. Old town is basically all pedestrian, and apparently floods with tourists. Again, old churches, ... read more

With no laptop on my travels, I wrote in my journal. Here it is, transcribed in all of it's glory: 7-21-06 I heard London calling, minded the gap, and looked left. I'm here. London is amazing! It's huge, bustling, and full of every race, nationality and style. The day went as such: We left Selwyn right after breakfast, and caught a cab to the rail station. (Upon arriving there, I realized I needed my passport to use my BritRail pass, and had to ride a taxi back to Selwyn to grab it. Meh.) The train was neat. I alternated reading Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintainance and watching English farmland whoosh by. So we made it to London, bought a day pass for the underground (best transportation ever! So fast!) and found our hotel. (Which, ... read more

Tony and Anne both work at different divisions of KLM, so we got a tour of the aiport. Tony works in the cargo section, as the technical supervisor, so we got shown through the freight handling terminal. One of the interesting sections to the cargo section is the live animals. They send lots of dogs, cats, chickens, as well as more obscure animals like elephants and sharks! Anne works in purchasing, so we got the tour of her offices followed by a few whit beers in the sports bar across the road. We had a beer tasting night at home, trying lots of different Belgian and German beers, including cherry beer, fruity pink beer (aimed at teenage girls), Duvel (Devil) beer - which is 9% alcohol, as well as more Heineken and whit beer. After beer ... read more
