London, like any huge cosmopolitan metropolis, is the home of many nationalities. Roughly 40% of the London population is of foreign origin, you can hear people talking in Turkish, Spanish, French, German, Bengali, Pakistani, Polish, Japanese,etc... The Camden Borough is supporting a project which wants to bring this diversity of languages closer to everybody and encourages teaching all sort of languages after school, community languages that is. They're sponsoring a Teaching Community Languages course which I attend every Friday for 3 hours and it's run by a lovely Bengali teacher. From what I've seen so far, it looks like it's gonna be lots of fun and lots of work as well, as we have assignments and very strict dead-lines, but there's nothing to fear, I've always been quite studious, and I actually enjoy it. The group ... read more

Europe » Austria » Salzburg » Salzburg April 10th 2007

Geo: 47.81, 13.04Today I did a day trip to Salzburg, it was only a two hour train ride, 150 kms from Munich. Salzburg is just over the German/Austrian border. This city is well known for being the birthplace of Mozart and for scenes of The Sound of Music being filmed in the city. The name Salzburg means 'salt castle' and comes from the barges of salt that were transported down the Salzach River which runs through the city. I walked through the palace gardens that were seen in the Sound of Music movie. From here I could see the Hohensalzburg Fortress at the top of the hill. The city is surrounded by the alps. Luckily for the city, only the cathedral dome and the bridges were destroyed during WWII. I saw a house that Mozart lived ... read more

Europe » Spain » District of Madrid April 9th 2007

Arrived at Madrid Barajas Airport, one of the bigger airports we have flown into on Tuesday afternoon. Terminals T4 & T4S , which are celebrating their first anniversary, are very impressive! Older terminals, T1, T2 and T3 are drab. Took the metro to our hotel, Hotel Room Mate Mario, a trendy Spanish hotel chain with reasonable room rates for Madrid, centrally located near Plaza de Oriente , Teatro Real and Palacio Real. The Madrid metro is cheap and efficient; however, carrying luggage up and down stairs is a definite negative! We ended the day by hitting our favorite tapas bar at Plaza Santa Ana for great tapas and wine, called the Vinotecha! Our favorite? Brie triangles, they are delicious! Our first full day of sightseeing in Madrid started early, when after having breakfast at our hotel, ... read more

Next morning headed north some more, went through newcastle, saw the angel of the north (??) some millenium thing apprently, saw an old wall, hadrians wall in fact (ahhhhh more old rocks!), then finally made it to edinburgh (yeeeeeaaaay) for a wander, whiskey drinking and haggis- which is really good, just like spicy mince! then went out for a look on the town- surprisingly busy ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence April 9th 2007

The batteries were well and truly recharged departing Venice. We got a taste for Tuscany on our train ride and the vibe was more energetic amongst the 3 of us. We spent the first afternoon wandering around in the sunshine... plotting where we would spend our one full day in Florence. The highlight had to be a deflated protest held by the local Grey Power in front of the Duomo. All class. The following day we explored the city. Dan and I ended up having (another very romantic) walk up to a pimp castle which encompassed much of the prime real estate in Florence. Castles, forts, fountains, terraced gardens, sun decks and of course 360 degree views of the sleepy city below amongst the Tuscan hills. That night we decided to try our hand at ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Northern Ireland April 9th 2007

On the 4th Dave and I borrowed the Land Rover and went for a drive to the Mourne Mountains. We couldn’t have asked for a nicer day, the sun was shining and we only had to wear 1 layer instead of 3! The Mournes are Northern Ireland highest mountains and contain 12 mountains in total. Our first stop of the day was Newcastle, which is an hour south of where we’ve been staying and along the coast. We cruised around town for a bit checking out shops and finding information about the Mournes. After that we headed into the Mournes to Silent Valley, which is a dammed and is where Belfast gets its water from. The drive to Silent Valley was really pretty; all the fields were lined with the traditional stone walls that you ... read more

So now we are in April, my mind turns to my Aussie working holiday visa and my New Zealand working holiday visa, the reason i need to get these visa's now is because they both have an age limit for issuing. Basically the Aussie and New Zealand visas can only be issued to peeps between 18-30, however once you have the visa you can enter the country ok,the bad news is i am turning 31 on the 18th June this year and so i need to get both visas before i turn 31 and then i have a year to enter the country's and get the clock ticking on these visas. Basically both visas allow you to enter and exit as many times as you want as long as you enter the country before the 12 ... read more

Not long to go until I jet off to Kilimanjaro, and it would be untruthful to say that I am not feeling a tad nervous at this stage. The preparation required for this trip has been phenomenal, and I do not feel that I will ever be ready. I was hoping to be fluent in conversational Swahili at this point: some chance of that! My last few weeks have been spent primarily in the pub, drinking copious amounts of red vino with the Gateley's crew. One of my aims is to detox whilst in Africa, but I have heard that they do a rather nice lager out in Tanzania. Let's see how long I last without a drink! ... read more

Hi everyone, Im back from my 12 day trip to Central and Eastern Europe. It was truly an amazing experience as I was able to see four amazing cities. The trip with my friend Eliot started in Berlin. Berlin was a very interesting city. It really is a city still looking for some sort of identity. There were the makings of a great city, but it just felt empty. In addition, I have never been in such a quiet city. You could honestly be walking down a street and not hear a single noise. The same could be said while riding on the underground or the above ground s-bahn. No one talked to one another, there was just silence. Regardless, it was still a great city and I was able to take in several great ... read more
