Europe April 9th 2007

So, how have you been? I’ve been away from my blog, I know ... One of my 2007 resolutions was ‘to make more time to myself and my friends,’ thus I wont be updating my blog every month, but I’ll have time to go for a coffee in the weekend (just send me an email) ;-) 2007 started among friends (excellent!) with Raclette (the national dish of Switzerland, after fondue of course …), coffee and home-made ‘olliebollen’ in peaceful Lausanne. The highlight of January/February was Rotterdam’s International Film Festival. The movie I wont forget is ‘The Scream of the Ants,’ a movie about differences, beliefs, and about how our view of the world can make it easy/difficult to cope with it (made in Iran, with the plot in India). I was in Paris in February and ... read more

It was Easter and stupidly I (Gerry) decided to drive up to Scotland. I left work in London at 2.45pm and didn't get to my mum and dad's until 1.45am, an 11 hour drive on my own (Denise couldn't make it)! The worst bit was about half a mile from my destination, when I hit some road works (not literally) and was stuck in a non-moving traffic jam for an hour and a half! Not what you need after a long journey. I survived by consuming vast quantities of Red Bull energy drink and umpteen bars of Twirl chocolate! This is my first visit to my mum and dad's new home. After about 38 years in the one house in East Kilbride the time had finally come to move to a smaller, more appropriate place. Auchlochan ... read more

UntitledBen lands in London!!!!!!! Wow, what a great city. Unfortunately, until this point most of the pubs have been shut as it's been Easter Sunday and Monday! Blasphemous!!!!!! Ben needs vitamin B. But what a great city, i'm very impressed, like Sydney but with more history and more to see. Today I went on an open roof bus ride round the city, the Imperial War Museum, Big Ben (of course), and Westminster Abbey. Most amusing is that Charles Darwin is buried in the church there which I found suprising, apparently the queen ordered it. Fantastic building though. Also went on a Jack the Ripper walking tour tonight, saw the sights of most of the murders, great. Well a cruise on the Thames tomorrow and then I think I'll explore the Natural History Museum afterward, and Tower ... read more

Just a report on our games. The start time for the game was delayed because the baseball field is also a golf driving range, and we had to wait for golfing practice to end so that the baseball game could begin. We won the first game, 4-2. I pitched. Then in the second game we sort of fell apart. 10 errors, I think? We lost 13-9. I will try to get some pictures of the games, hopefully the next series of games will have photos along with. ... read more

Our last day saw us finish off the other 2 loops of our open bus tour. We waited for the bus in one of the petanque gardens outside Hotel Invalides (Napoleons grave and military hospital) and found out that that is where many a battle had taken place as that was where the defence line was. It was interesting cruising around the streets into more residential areas to see where people lived and to also see some of the newer modern architecture of the CBD etc. We went passed the National Library, which is 4 buildings, one on each corner, and are built to look like open books. We hopped off in Bastille again and went to a French pub where we finally got to have the delicacy of Frogs Legs. They tasted like sweet ... read more

Well, my last full day in the land of the midnight sun where the black rocks stand guard against the cold sea... The Blue Lagoon was one of the most luxurious experiences of my life! It was very cheap actually compared to most of Iceland. It was very relaxing, despite the airy-fairy, hippy nutcases floating around (One guy was sat cross legged in the shallows in a sort of Buddhist meditation!). They were like mines full of bullshit, waiting to grind up against the thin hull of my patience and detonate! I did the full works, silica mud mask (twice!), and sat in there for a couple of hours until I was wrinkled like a prune! Anyway, I"m going shopping today. Reykjavik is slowly waking up after Easter Sunday (although shops aren"t opening til midday!) The ... read more

Le Cyclisme Part 2 Europe » Belgium » Brussels By SwestApril 9th 2007 Hi all... Finally I've found a wireless internet provider to hook into... the modern world amazes me sometimes! So... I thought it was time for me to upload some photo's. I will upload a few pics from yesterday... though the few piece de resistance shots will be left out (as they become freely available on the internet when they are published here). We are spending today filing stories for radio back home.... and will be heading to Paaschendale over the next two days, where I have an interview with the head of the Australian War Graves Commission. Now that I know where I can get wireless internet... I will be in touch ag... read more

That's right folks, we climbed 463 steps to the top of the Duomo this morning. Now, these aren't your average stairs, they are narrow and winding 600 year old stairs. First you go up these narrow NARROW flights, then a straight stretch, then some spiral stair cases, then another set of regular stairs, the higher you go the more percarious the stairways become. Then you get these fools going the wrong way and trying to come down where you are trying to go up, did I mention how narrow these stairs are? Anyway, once you get to the top it is so worth it. On the way up you get to see the frescoed interior of the dome close up, quite amazing, then about another two hundred steps later you go out onto the roof for ... read more

Dublin Photos Europe » Portugal » porto By Amanda MApril 9th 2007 Here are some photos I took in Dublin that I didn't get a chance to post. Enjoy!! Also, some interesting notes from the Guinness tour: - Nigeria drinks more Guinness than the US and Canada combined - Because of the levels of iron, magnesium, etc. in Guinness, it used to be advertised as "good for you" and "Guinness for strength" ... they actually used to give Guinness to blood donors (a pint of Guinness for a pint of blood) and to new mothers after giving birth to replenish nutrients in the body - Guinness' symbol is a harp, and when Ireland decided to use a harp as its national symbol, it told Guinness it would h... read more

Ever since I was little I have always had a desire to explore the world, to get out of the small town that I grew up in. I knew that there was more to the world than what I was used to. So I told myself that one day I will travel and see what I can. And so this is where it all begins, and why I chose to study in Milan, Italy. I know that I am starting this blog about 4 months late and that I have only a few more weeks left in Europe but I will try to back track a little bit to tell you about everything for all those people I haven’t kept in touch with (I’m sorry!!). January 2007- At Logan Airport I dragged my three suitcases ... read more
