"The Scottish Government has announced new measures to ensure that stocks of haggis are reared along humane standards, ensuring a cruelty free environment and nice death. In a deal with the Scottish Greens, thought by commentators to be a trade off over the recent budget controversy, all Scottish caught haggis will have to achieve a live weight of 1.2kg before slaughter and be fed on a diet of worms and mixed grain. Haggis stocks are low due to a high uptake for Burns night and pressure from corporate shoots to provide plenty of entertainment for paying customers, though Haggis beaters, who depend upon the high volume, will be petitioning the Scottish Government on the issue. In other news, Afghan farmers will be selling Fair Trade heroin in selected outlets in Britain . . . . " ... read more

Kinlochleven to Ft. William: 12 miles It was a nice day. If my knee was ok, all would be right with the world. As it was, I dreaded every descent. At one point I walked backwards (easier on the knee) for almost a mile. I walked with, off and on, the Jersey girl, both sets of Belgians (the couple and the two guys) and a really nice German couple (this was their first long distance hike), Dani and Thomas. The views were great. The last 2 miles, I took the road instead of the trail to trim off 2 miles. It was still downhill and it still hurt. I found a place to stay in Ft. William, a nice tourist/outdoor base camp sort of town. The two Belgian guys and the German couple stayed at the ... read more

Kingshouse to Kinlochleven: 9 miles This day turned out to be the only rainy day I would encounter. It was also the most strenuous. We had to ascend the Devil’s Staircase, the highest point along The Way. It was so cold, windy and rainy. None of the walkers spoke much, we all just climbed, rested, passed each other, rested, climbed…. At the top, going around the bend, the wind hit so hard, I was afraid I would be knocked off the edge. Then came the descent into Kinlochleven. Mile, after mile, after mile, downhill. My knee was killing me. I was using my hiking poles for support. It took me forever to make it hobbling down the hill. I was passed by everyone, including an eighty-something man, carrying a full pack. I was pathetic. Finally, I ... read more

Bridge of Orchy to Kingshouse: 9 miles It took me less than 4.5 hours to complete this leg. The day started out drizzly, but soon cleared up. I was a fairly level section. My knee barely hurt, but my toe was getting very bad. The nail was turning black and pressure was building. I decided to find a lighter and heat up a safety pin and puncture the nail, to release pressure as soon as I got to Kingshouse. Kingshouse had a hotel (expensive and booked well in advance) and free camping. I had to wait four hours for my backpack to arrive so I could set up my tent. I waited in the climbers bar and had some soup and coffee. When my backpack finally arrived, I found a pretty nice spot by the river ... read more

Tyndrum to Bridge of Orchy: 7 miles Before heading out, I bought a roll of bandaids and some breakfast. My total was $7. The 7 miles from Tyndrum to Bridge of Orchy was very level (only taking 3.5 hours to complete), running parallel to some railroad tracks. Because it was level my knee was good (until the descent at the end), but, of course, it’s always something. My big toe (on my right foot), that I stubbed hard on a rock on the second day, was throbbing with every step. I wished I was on one of those trains. I was seriously considering bailing on this hike. I ran into several people that were taking trains from one stop to another, instead of hiking. I was definitely tempted. I even went to the train station and ... read more

Inverarnan to Crianlarich to Tyndrum: 12 miles I woke up to see the screen around my tent covered, totally, by midges. I knew once I opened it, I would be inundated. Eventually, I had to get up, so I unzipped an crawled out as fast as possible, which is not fast enough. Within seconds, I was covered. I found myself trying to slather on skin so soft (basically rubbing drowning midges into any exposed skin) while attempting to breathe. Every breath I took contained midges. They were the air. I totally underestimated the painful, little monsters. I had to pack up my tent with a sarong wrapped around my head while trying to wave midges away from my face. My tent, sleeping bag and all my gear were full of midges. I went to the ... read more

Rowardennan to Inversnaid to Inverarnan: 14 miles I had breakfast at the hostel ($8). It was continental, but we could go back for more. I loaded up. God, I love this being able to eat all I want, and still lose weight, thing. At breakfast, I talked to the 2 German women that I had passed yesterday on the trail. One of them was having all kinds of foot and knee issues. I also talked to the first soloist I had met so far, a bicyclist, no less. There were only a few of these. This one was going to have to ferry her bicycle for the second section of the day, Inversnaid to Inverarnan, because this section is said to be the most precarious. After breakfast, we bade our goodbyes ("see you on the ... read more

Easter Drumquhassle to Balmaha to Rowardennan: 16 miles God, I ache. My training philosophy of not training, but "saving" energy for the walk, was probably not the way to go. First things first. I woke up about 7am, packed up my tent (no midges...no worries), dropped off my bag (freedom!!) and started out toward Drymen for some breakfast. I also figured I would pick up a map there, hopefully, since there are a few intersections where The Way is not marked. Plus, I would have some idea how far I had traveled. I ran into a couple from Belgium, who also camped in Easter Drumquhassle and walked with them into town. They were carrying packs, so I would get a day ahead of them, since they were not going the entire 16 miles today. I ... read more

The West Highland Way, Scotland: 95 miles: I have wanted to walk the West Highland Way in Scotland since the first time I came here a couple of years ago. I found out about it through our couchsurfing host , Chris. Because there are no predatory animals in Scotland, I thought it would be a good place to do a long distance hike. When I was in Turkey, I decided that after Tricia and I finished our touring together, I would do it. Alone. I googled female walking the West Highland Way alone and only found a couple of entries, but from what I could tell, it seemed safe enough. I ordered a backpack, tent, sleeping bag, walking poles and started planning. I would also carry pepper spray, just in case. I became more and more ... read more

Arrived safely on Friday after a long delay sat on the runway in Bristol!! Inverness is very pretty, but it was quite cold. We managed to walk 9 miles out of Inverness that day which we were really pleased with. We walked through forestry which was amazing. We pitched up camp on the side of the road waiting for a taxi at the end of the day and hardly saw a car pass us. We felt like we were out in the wilderness. Tracey our taxi driver that picked us up from the airport was a welcome sight coming over the hills as we were freezing sat there on the verge, even with our kettles whistling away. The next morning after a wonderful breakfast we were collected by Tracey again and taken back to the spot ... read more
