It didn't take us long to leave the country again. Just over 5 months. We had picked a few places that were 'must visit places' while we were away and the Guinness Store House was one, the other was Scotland. With the Guinness tour well and truly behind us, it was time to tick Scotland off the box. A couple of months ago my hand slipped and I accidently booked flights to Scotland. I was only checking would it work without money in my account and well.... it did! The flights were cheap anyway (around €80 for the two of us return) so why not go?! Our flight out was an early one, flying at 6:30am. The only problem was it was out of Dublin. I'm writing this now a few days since we flew and ... read more

Scotland! Edinburgh! I love it! I'm not sure why though, it's even more Grey than London - but there is something about this place that sits well with me enough to want to move here (except the strong winds - you can piss those right off). Just over 4 hours train ride from London and I arrived in the centre of the Scottish capital - Edinburgh. Again, with all the historic buildings and history (but slightly less looked after than London). So far so good with the dodgy Bradley ankles verses centuries old cobbled streets (now I've cursed myself). The incredible Edinburgh Castle dominates the city - and it's pretty damn impressive! I didn't realise how volcanic this area was until walking around it and viewing it from the top of The Nelson monument (endless spiral ... read more

Bonjour Monsieur et Madame are having fun. Firstly the most important thing - a Big smile and congratulations to Anne and Mikko - actually its about time! we have been waiting for this news! hurrah! Our first two days were spent in Edinburgh with the landlady goddess Sanday - we met Sandy last year in the Lazy Duck Hostel and she invited us to experience her hospitality so we decided to take the offer up and what a lovely time we had with her. She is obviously Edinburgh's best kept secret hotelier! On Tuesday we did a 25 mile round trip ride along the Union Canal stopping at Ratho for lunch - some pictures attached. It is amazing how the canal crosses over the Motorway and other rivers - I have tried to depict this in ... read more

Bonjour mes amies Sorry for the deluge but blogging in Scotland is not easy - the signal is intermittent to say the least. We left Sandy sadly and set off on the second leg of our adventure. Glencoe was to be the stopping off place on the way to the Isle of Skye. How do I even begin to describe this phenomena? Glencoe has a sense of foreboding, beauty and spirituality that you need to experience rather than read about. The constantly changing colours and weather add to the mystery as you drive through - around each bend you emit yet another ahhhhh. I am wary of using language beyond that of amazing, out of this world, awsome etc etc which I feel we now use to describe fairly non descript things out of habit. When ... read more

The weather gods were really in a good mood as we headed towards Fort William and Ben Nevis. There was hardly a cloud in the sky and the deep blue lochs looked like flat mirrors in the morning light. What a day - we could hardly believe our luck! We bypassed the haphazardly built town of Fort William and headed into the Valley of Glen Nevis. Stopping to check the weather forecast at the Ben Nevis visitor information centre, we were just in time to hear about conditions at the top of the mountain over the past few days. Even though the forecast and visibility was beautiful, we knew that Scotland’s highest mountain would have to wait for another visit - it was completely covered in snow and ice and totally off limits without crampons and ... read more

Wow, it's been a while. I won't try and fill you in on the past six months. But the last two weeks have been very busy indeed. Firstly, I ran a marathon. And I actually ran the whole thing, too. Excuse me for being a wee bit boastful :) It was the Loch Ness Marathon, which goes along the eastern side of the loch and finishes in Inverness. 10 degrees, sunny, and crisp wintry light. It was all rather surreal by the end, when I was hobbling along at about 8km an hour. I had to choke back tears at the end when a lady gave me a banana, shortly before I collapsed against a tent and needed another runner's girlfriend to help me up again. But before that, I had a week travelling around Scotland ... read more

Kyle of Tongue - Lochinver - Ullapool - Durnoch - Shin Falls - Lairg - Inverness Today felt like a typical Sunday back home - very few people on the streets and very few cars on the road - except, of course, this was the far north of Scotland and every day seemed to be just like this! The weather was changeable, bright one minute, overcast the next, sometimes blue sky, sometimes black with looming clouds warning of a storm to come, sometimes calm, sometimes windy. It made for superb views and challenging photography. I've realised that my blogs all mention the names of places that are not only unpronounceable to Sassenachs, but could be just about anywhere. So, if you have a motoring atlas of Great Britain, it might be a good idea to have ... read more

The Strathnaver Trail and the Kyle of Tongue It was Saturday and we expected terrible weekend traffic on the narrow roads of this tourist trail. It certainly proved to be like nothing we’d ever experienced before. We drove all day and, if it hadn’t been for a veteran sports car rally of 20 cars travelling in the opposite direction, our total tally of vehicles would have been: one Royal Mail van, two tractors, four fishermen’s trucks, half a dozen motorbikes, another half dozen pushbikes, and three tourists’ cars! After an excellent full Scottish breakfast (just like the full English but with black pudding) at Cloisters, our journey took us back the way we’d come - east to Coldbackie and Borgie - before turning south into the North Highlands on the Strathnaver Trail. This was literally a ... read more

We spent five days walking near Corrour Station, a station that was made famous by the film, Trainspotting. It is Britain's highest train station and the area between the station and Ben Alder is one of the most remote in Britain. in Trainspotting Tommy explains to Rents, Sickboy, Begby and the ginger one what a great country Scotland is but they wholeheartedly disagree. Maybe they knew something about the midgies nearby but they could have had few complaints about the landscape of lakes, mountain and heather. I'm sure the sheer number of deer would have impressed their drug-addled brains too. Their loss. Edi managed 5 days walking and his 100th and 101st ticks and there were some sore knees on the lovely train journey back to Edinburgh via Glasgow. I managed 4 days walking and 8 ... read more
