This past weekend, a group of my fellow flatmates traveled up to the Highlands of Scotland, to the town of Glencoe. While the bus rides were mostly uneventful on the way there, my ride back to Glasgow was 30 minutes late, and I failed to catch the bus to Edinburgh on time. I ended having to wait three hours in the bus station for the next bus. Other than that, I had a really great time! We mostly went hiking around the area, but there was a lot of misty-like rain off-and-on throughout the trip.See the pictures below. Nothing much happening today. Whale and Dolphin lectures were canceled this week, so this has lightened my classload for the week. Weather's a bit cooler today, but luckily no rain so far.... read more

Today Uncle John, Aunt May and Aunt Elaine took me for a gorgeous scenic drive through real snowy mountains, I have never seen anything like it before, amazing. Snow covered mountains surrounded me. We wound through the hills till we got to Glencoe, an amazing site surrounded by sprawling hills and rich in wildlife. It was also the sight of a massacre centuries ago. Ever since I got to Scotland I have wanted to go there and it was absolutely stunning. I have never seen mountains like that and snow like that, just gorgeous. We went into the visitor info centre that had all the geological information about how it formed, Afterwards we drove in to Glencoe Village to look at the monument to the massacre, on the way we drove past this little girl who ... read more

Geo: 56.8784, -4.45832Well id heard alot about the Highlands before I came to Scotland. Everyone insisted it was very much worthwhile, and really beautiful to see. I believed them, but I was still taken away by how cool the Highlands beyond Glencoe were. The road weaved in and out of a valley, with towering mountains on either side. the valley was full of streams, and scattered with stones and marshlands. A cool wind whipped throughout, and there was a really old, somewhat unsettling feel about the area, it was fantastic. A similar style feel to that of Stonehenge. Amidst the rain and winds, took a slight hike around. Felt like I could have stayed there for hours!... read more

I have always thought that the friendship between myself and James Grant resembled slightly that of Withnail and I. I was of course I. And he even shares Richard E.'s surname. But when we told people that we were heading to a remote cottage in the Cairngorms, somewhere about an hour south of Inverness, it turned out that everyone else also thought of us as a Withnail and I duo! However, in recent years it would probably be more correct to say that our roles have swapped. We now both believe ourselves to be I, though in fact we are both Withnail to the others eye. Yer ken? I? Och aye! So yes James drove up with me at the map to a cottage belonging to a family friend of mine. The plan was to write ... read more

Coming back to Scotland, I always find (regardless of the fact that I’ve not actually missed the place) that I end up with a particular song stuck in my head - “Caledonia”. The words seem to awake the dormant Highlander in me and I find myself pressed up against the window of the bus/train/plane yearning to be among the heathered hills and rugged mountains. The line that really gets me is “Caledonia’s calling me and now I’m coming home." For years I have assumed from the gravelly voice I always heard it sung in that the song was by Rod Stewart. And assuming this I developed a new found respect for the man. In fact it turns out the song’s by a Dougie Mclean so I’m pleased to be able to re-ignite my dislike for Scotland’s ... read more

Now the title does not refer to the new JK Rowling book but to our adventures in the Scotish Highlands. We left Edinburgh on Sunday in the sunshine to travel to the most Northern part of our journey to Inverness. Now I didn't realise how big Scotland is but Inverness is 150 miles from Edinburgh and there is still about 100 miles more north of Inverness. Anyway, we got to our campsite and started to put up the tent. I have been having problems with keeping the pegs straight so I came up with the idea of getting a stone and using it with the mallet to straigten out the tent pegs. Yet the stone I picked was disgusting. It had poo underneth it. I hope it was only that belonging to a dog, but I ... read more

Today was spent on the beautiful an t-Eilean Sgitheanach, or the Isle of Skye, as it's known to most people. The Isle of Mist and Cloud. Sligachan was the first stop for the day, in the Red Cuilins. It had been raining so much, the river was just wild. We got to stand in the screaming wind and rain listening to Simon tell us one of the many variations of the legends of Skiach (it's pronounced skih-hath, for those not familiar with Gaelic pronunciation, emphasis on the first syllable). Then it was back on the bus and off to Port Rìgh (Portree), capital of Skye. Port Rìgh (Port of Kings) is a beautiful little town, what an amazing setting for a town! Would love to live there one day, just to be able to admire the ... read more
