6 locks, total 126 My apologies for initially forgetting to add the photo descriptions yesterday – I have now. Also forgot to mention that the sausages we bought from the farm shop 2 days ago were absolutely delicious and we ate them to the accompaniement of the church bells from Cropredy. Today the 5 Claydon Locks lifted us over 30' to the summit of the South Oxford Canal and an 11 mile pound (level canal – no locks). It was quite breezy in the farmland section before we went through a steeply wooded cutting that is the Fenny Compton Tunnel, except the top was removed in 1868 for whatever reason! We headed for Fenny Compton Marina as we needed help from a boat mechanic about our leaking calorifier. This is a water tank with a coil ... read more

Stratford on Avon and Warwick. On the 30th April we set out to travel three hours on English roads. Narrow roads with cars parked on both sides and parked in both directions are somewhat of a challenge, especially since in the narrow space between the parked cars , locals drive very fast. Broadway was our first destination and it was said to be the epitome of Cotswold villages It was where I purchased my pullover twenty years ago and I needed a replacement since it was full of holes. I bought two for the price of one, so was happy. On to Stratford, using the Satnav, which took us on the scenic route via the Scottish border. We arrived nearly an hour later than we should have as a result. I spoke harshly to my Lady ... read more

Welcome to Warwick Castle ! Britain's Ultimate Castle ! Quite a statement indeed ! I first visited Warwick Castle on a cold January afternoon and although I could appreciate the sheer size and medieval magnificence of the Castle, I saw virtually nothing of its grounds still under the spell of winter. So when I revisited the place this year in late June, it was with a totally opened mind and I decided to walk to the Castle fron the town that bears its name. Warwick is a pretty town filled with manicured gardens and picturesque black and white buildings which offers a nice selection of restaurants and tearooms. I accessed the Castle from the Gate located just a stone thrown away from the High St through delightful back gardens in bloom and discovered the delightful Thomas ... read more

Welcome to Stratford upon Avon ! I fell in love with this quintessential English town long before I first visited it and each new visit is a delight in itself ! Shakespeare's birth town is attractive in all seasons and I love walking though the historic streets with their beautiful buildings and delightful shops, cafes and restaurants. Over the years, Stratford upon Avon has really succeeded in its gracious transformation and I love the visual presentation now available at the Shakespeare's Birthplace which really takes you back in times with a very effective introductory "3D" presentation. After years of building works, the canal area is finally complete and I just loved the way the Garden Designers laid English mixed borders rather than simple flower beds in the areas surrounding the magnificent bronze st... read more

Concerto on Oxford and Grand Union Canals We all loved Concerto and we all love canal boating. Canal boating has its own rituals and culture. Those on the canals are a mixture of those who live on their boats, the British grey nomads and those like us – pesky hirers with not much idea. Boating in the canals is very different to any type of boating in Australia. The canals are narrow, with many low bridges, many boats to pass both moored and travelling the other way and then there are the locks. To get to our return point at Warwick, we went through 27 locks – including a “flight” of nine and a double stair lock. Andy is the captain, Jack the cabin boy, Eliza the tiller girl and Harry and me whatever Captain ... read more

To 3/4G and Mr Mcfarland In England my family and I caught a canal boat to Warwick Castle. We started at Brinklow so it’s about three days there and three days back. The canal boats are about 8 feet wide and 56 feet long. It has 5 beds, 2 bathrooms and a kitchen. There are a lot of locks, which is like a boat lift. The best thing about canal boats, are that there are heaters in the boat so it makes it really warm. As you all know England is freezing cold. When we made it to Warwick we caught a bus to the castle. It was a really big castle and probably the best I’m ever going to go to. The towers were really high and the dungeons were really scary. It was ... read more

Hi 5JS We have just visited Warwick Castle. It was first built in the 11th century but after a couple of wars parts had to be fixed. The first queen Elizabeth has visited it as well as the present queen Elizabeth have both visited it in the past. After a couple of wars the owner of the castle (I can’t remember the present owner there are so many) wanted to make the castle a home. Then over years it has become a tourist attraction. It has a scary show called the castle dungeon. The first part was the plague where there is a small room and a lady with blood on her face and a body under a blanket. She rips the blanket off the body and starts to pull out his organs followed by the ... read more
