Its been a quiet start to the year hiking trip wise so with spring poking it's head above the rampants (often to just be shot down with icy weather and occasional snow storms) it was time to strap on the hiking boots and join one of my groups for a relaxed day hikes in the countryside to ease my way back into the habit. Nothing like a relaxed 9 mile hike along canals towpaths and down country lanes and roads to get you back in touch with how lovely spring in the UK is, if the weather holds off. While the clouds threatened to bring on the rain, the sun kept chasing them across the sky and we had an almost sunny hike. I'd have to say not the most exciting part of the UK, but ... read more

This weekend, we rented a car with two of Mike's classmates from Singapore (Fuad and Aloysius - the same two we met at the Giant's Causeway), and headed out on the wrong side of the road (well, technically, it was the left side) to a region of England just 1.5 hours outside of London called the Cotswolds. The region is a range of limestone hills, which are dotted with picturesque villages that are made of limestone buildings. It's also a great region to do some hiking, which is what we planned on doing. We set off on Saturday morning to pick up the car at Heathrow airport. We had only gotten our acts together on Friday night to rent the car (didn't get around to booking a hotel though), so we arrived at the airport at ... read more

Left Cardiff for a longish drive to Bournville. this was my surprise for them all, big hit as soon as you walked in they started giving us chocolate, we had soooooo much the kids and I eventually gave up but Greg soldiered on, eating all of our left overs! Lots of warm chocolate, adding in our own choices. Another play ground to wear them out. Then off to Stratford upon Avon, checked in and headed in to town,Shakespeare's house and a great dinner at the red lion.... read more

Off to Warwick Castle today, best preserved castle (but a little too much like a theme park now) in England. Very expensive but we spent about 4 hours there, walking again nonstop and the bonus of 550 steps! Did the dungeon tour as an add on, I was caught out a couple of times and screamed nice and loudly!!!!! Cooper was hauled in to court and in to the dock, found guilty for being Australian!!!!! Kasey ran every where, her favourite part was learning about how they used "bum waste" their term not mine, to defend the castle, throwing it at anyone trying to get in. Cooper liked the dungeons. greg like walking the wallls, I just loved the history. You may notice our clothes are starting to look the same day after day - yes I ... read more

So my flights are all booked and paid for, but thanks to the incompetence of Birmingham Uni, my flights have cost me £1060 (long story - but basically I was waiting to hear on my teacher training application and waited around for a decision and didn't want to book flights because of it...they took 2 months to tell me 'no' and now all the other places I've applied to are full...)I have paid extra on my flights to be able to change my coming home dates up to 3 times at no extra cost (woo!). I think its more likely I'll have to come home early cuz I'm skint than stay out later cuz I'm having such a good time! I will be spending the first three weeks in Merida, Mexico, on this project Merida /ur ... read more

This morning we had another day with Martin of Absolute Touring, this time to Stratford Upon Avon and Warwick Castle as my husband and son were determined to see a real castle whilst in England. We first made a stop at Bladon to see Winston Churchill’s grave as my son had developed a bit of an interest in war while we were in Paris! After that we headed to Stratford for a wander around. Martin, the tour guide, gave us complimentary tickets into Shakespeare’s Birthplace. It was quite interesting but probably not worth the price if we had paid for it. We drove to Anne Hathaway’s Cottage but did not bother to go inside. We then headed to Warwick. We first stopped on a bridge which gave a marvellous view of the Castle for photos, before ... read more

Yesterday was spent on a tour of the English countryside, lunch at the Cotswolds and a short stop in the afternoon at Stratford-upon-Avon (aka Shakespeare's home). The countryside was cute, however we didn't spend enough time in Stratford. I don't have much to say about it, so I'll just post a few pictures. We travelled by Eurostar (aka the train that goes under the English Tunnel) to Paris, which was actually quite nice. The seats were comfy and the headrest comes around your head which was useful for a nap. Paris seems nice so far, although we didn't do much due to the early morning. My mom did walk to Church of Invalides, where Napoleon Bonaparte is buried, while I napped. My initial, brief impression of the City is that it is quite nice and so ... read more

G'day Well the sun is shining this morning as I'm sitting out in a beautiful garden of the B&B we are staying at called 'The Old Manor House' just outside Stratford-upon-Avon. The house dates back to 1550 & it's just remarkable that we are actually staying in somewhere that is that old! We arrived in Stratford yesterday lunch time after another night in South Wales, then over the border back into England. Unfortunately the rain just hasn't stopped so it was nice to wake up this morning to some sunshine. We are taking an easy morning before heading out for a drive into the Cotswolds, Chipping Camden, Stow-on-the-wold and other interesting names. Last night we had a fantastic night at the Royal Shakespeare theatre watching Macbeth, wow it was absolutely brilliant. The home of Shakespeare of ... read more
