0 locks, 200 in total. Our second day in Birmingham and I braved the shopping area for replacement glasses (to be delivered to their Nantwich branch) and Esme's birthday present (to be ordered online now as their stock was so limited). We paid dearly for my smug comments yesterday about lack of rain – the heavens well and truly opened during the evening and water came in the stern door and round 3 of the windows but we caught it quickly and no damage done. We have had a change of plan thrust upon us. The main route out of Birmingham and through Wolverhampton has a flight of 22 locks and 2 nights ago vandals drained several sections of this by opening up top and bottom paddles on some locks. When engineers came to check after ... read more

0 locks, 200 in total. Today has not been as we had been led to believe, for whatever reason, and we're slightly relieved after last night's golf ball incident - the golf course is actually 'between owners' and closed so our unfriendly slicers were trespassing anyway. We had rain overnight and early morning but, other than few spots during the day, the forecast day of rain didn't happen to us – score! There was plenty of graffiti, a fair number of items in the canal, several boats with metal shutters on their windows to deter the stone throwers and quite a few derelict factories and works BUTthe suburbs were largely hidden from the canal by trees on one side and the railway on the other. Ian from Saltisford's advice was good. The canal centre of Birmingham ... read more

0 locks, 200 in total. We stopped off quite early on at a farm shop called Wedges and the towpath telegraph was right – a lovely place, quite small but well-stocked with much of the food homemade. We bought cheese and onion pasties, a quiche, sausages, bread and a chocolate swiss roll – we like to eat healthily! On the move again, this time through a very long wooded cutting – we could see the sun glinting through the trees but the rays didn't reach us till we emerged from the cutting about lunchtime. We had a sunny cruise this afternoon, heading for Lyons Boatyard where they have showers. It is also on the edge of the Birmingham suburbs so we will be able to reach the centre of Birmingham and the CCTV cameras tomorrow. The ... read more

19 locks, 200 in total. We motored our final mile (for the moment) on the Grand Union to Kingswood Junction. We turned left here onto the Lapworth Link which then divides – to the left again takes you onto the South Stratford Canal (to Stratford upon Avon) but we turned right onto the North Stratford (to Birmingham). The whole area around Kingswood Junction was eye-catching – old canal buildings, houses that embraced the canal, a few private moorings. We joined the Stratford a little way up the Lapworth Flight and it was a delightful morning's workout. It is another narrow canal so the locks are much quicker. There is a whole variety of lock mechanisms and gates in this flight – you never know what to expect. Some of the paddles were really stiff to move ... read more

21 locks, total 181 The Hatton Flight lifts the canal 150' in less than 1½ miles. We drew the short straw with lock partners today; sharing the workload had to be balanced by the sheer frustration caused by our partner's lady helm. She had 3 rules:- Me first Don't ever look behind Go slowly, bordering on stop. She didn't think we should use fenders in locks either – just as well we do or there'd be no paintwork left! The boat behind us paired up with a crew of 8, commenting after the 21st lock, “Well, that was easy, wasn't it.” Actually it was very tiring as the paddles were incredibly stiff to turn, but there is a lovely sense of achievement when you finally get there, something we shall probably feel many times over this ... read more

2 locks, 160 in total. After yesterday's extremely windy weather things have calmed a little today. Leamington Spa abruptly ended at the first bridge and we were almost in the country again, like a narrow green belt between Leamington and Warwick. There was building near the canal but not right up to it in many places. We stopped off at a huge Tesco for the next 2 days' shopping and then motored on towards the first of the 2 locks, going uphill again. A boat was waiting on the lock moorings already and the lock was emptying so we pottered along, hoping to go straight into the lock and avoid mooring. No such luck – the 2 boats in the lock really were on a go-slow and I can't imagine what they were doing to take ... read more

10 locks, 158 in total. We joined forces with another Aussie couple just after we set off this morning and travelled with them down the 10 locks and into Royal Leamington Spa. We intended to stop a little earlier but gift horses and all that. Our 2 boats secured the last moorings in the area nearest the supermarket (well, Co-op again) – let's just say you'd need to know people if you're moored that close to them. It's not pretty here but canals are functional places first and foremost and, as it's Saturday, we didn't want to be close to pubs or clubs. There are 7 salt water springs at Leamington Spa, discovered in 1586, but the town only received its royal charter in 1838 from Queen Victoria. The elegant part of town with long rows ... read more

13 locks, total 148 The canal continued to curl around Napton's hill until we reached Napton Junction, once called Wigram's Turn, where we turned left onto the Grand Union Canal heading towards Birmingham. The Grand Union is the backbone of England's canal system. It is Britain's longest canal, joining Birmingham and London but it didn't acquire its name until 1929 because it began life as 8 separate canals, mainly built between 1793 and 1805. Once built, the old route between the cities via the Oxford Canal and the River Thames was bypassed – 60 miles were saved but at the expense of more locks. During WW2 it was an important route for arms equipment and coal; many teams of 3 women worked the canals during this time. We passed many marinas on our route today – ... read more

A super-easy day today, down the final 6 locks into Napton. Not only did we have a crew – many thanks Susan for travelling so far to visit us; it was lovely to see you – but there were also 5 lock volunteers! At the bottom of the flight is a little store, a pub and some Waterways buildings – the whole area is looked after and welcoming. The threatened heavy rain and 50 mph gusts of wind didn't materialise until just before Susan left which was good as we sat chatting in the sun. We then had to judge the best time to venture into Napton on the Hill as the clouds were low, black and thunderous – we wanted to dry our coats if possible too. How many times have you been asked for ... read more

We took on water and set off a little earlier today, hoping to beat the forecast rain. Whilst mild, the wind was very strong so coats were order of the day, despite the sunshine which in fact lasted until we moored for lunch at Marston Doles Lock (sometimes called the top of the Napton flight). En route we had to secure a narrowboat that a walker warned us about, bow moorings trailing in the water and boat stuck right across the canal, pinned in place by the wind. The ground was very soft so the mooring pins were not secure, even when knocked in as far as they'd go so we used the boat's centre line and tied it across the towpath to a secure post – naughty but necessary. After lunch it was still dry ... read more
