Finally, after almost of eleven months of planning, the day we were due to leave was finally here. Our original itinerary had us travelling in March and we were intending to spend time in Bath and Cornwall, but due to work commitments we needed to change dates to January. Most of what we wanted to see and do in Cornwall would have been closed, so we decided to change to Paris, which is our favourite city, and to visit another couple of French cities as well as Barcelona. After a busy Christmas and a few days break over New Year to watch the fireworks, we were finally ready to go.A driver collected us for the drive to the airport – we find that if we are travelling for more than three weeks it is cheaper to use ... read more

Geo: 34.0113, -118.492 Sadly, our last day in the US. We all went for a very long walk right down to Venice Beach, and then continued on to stroll around the Venice Canals, which we had missed out on last time. We returned to Santa Monica Pier and ate Italian food at Al Mare and had a final few drinks before returning to the hotel to pack.We had a late checkout so we were able to watch another sunset by the fire pits, while enjoying burgers and wine before our taxi to LAX for the long flight home. Many thanks to S & J, and their boys for sharing this with us. It was an amazing holiday!... read more

Geo: 34.0113, -118.492We had now finished our time in Hollywood and used Prime Time Shuttle to transfer us to Santa Monica for our last two days of the holiday. We checked into our rooms at Loew's Santa Monica and found that we had been upgraded to a suite with stunning ocean and pool views. Lovely. Here is my final hotel review of the trip: https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowUserReviews-g33052-d219486-r366220706-Loews_Santa_Monica_Beach_Hotel-Santa_Monica_California.html We spent the afternoon walking along Santa Monica Pier, followed by lunch at Bubba Gump's. Touristy, but enjoyable and we are tourists after all. We spent the evening on Loew's terrace by their amazing fire pits watching the beautiful sunset. Dinner was seafood ... read more

Geo: 34.0533, -118.245 After another delicious breakfast, we caught a cab to Universal Studios. Again, we had been before, but it is good fun and we all enjoyed our day. After returning to the hotel we walked around Hollywood Boulevard a bit more, had a look at the Chinese Theatre and finished up with yummy steaks at The Grill on Hollywood and drinks in some of the Roosevelt's amazing bars.... read more

Geo: 34.0533, -118.245We had breakfast in 25 Degrees this morning and discovered that they make eggs benedict as well as they make burgers. Not cheap, but sooo good.Today we had booked a private tour of LA with Abi from Blue Sky Tours. It was a totally fabulous day. We had been to LA before but S and J and their boys hadn't. Abi made sure we saw a lot of it in one day. We started with a close-up view of the Hollywood Sign, followed by a visit to Griffith Observatory. Sadly the Observatory wasn't open in the morning. We had visited it last time and would have liked to have shown the others, but unfortunately we couldn't afford to wait until after lunch. After that we went on a brief four of some of the movie star's ... read more

Geo: 34.0533, -118.245We had our last Prestige Lounge breakfast, and then caught a cab to the airport for our Southwest flight to LA.As always Southwest were fantastic. Flight was on time and we landed at Bob Hope airport and caught our prebooked private shuttle to the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. We all got checked into our rooms. I didn't like our view – a high school and a car park, so called reception and got changed to a much better room on a higher floor with a view of Hollywood Boulevard and the Chinese Theatre out one way and the Hollywood Sign the other. Here is my review of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel: https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowUserReviews-g32655-d77274-r364288007-The_Hollywood_Roosevelt-Los_Angeles_California.htmlWe walked around the corner to Mel's Diner for reuben sandwhiches – cheesy... read more

Geo: 36.0846, -115.172 Today our families separated as some wanted to shop some more. G and I headed to Paris to visit the "Eiffel Tower" and sampled their promotional Eiffel Tower cocktail. We too headed for the premium outlets again, but fortunately for only a short time this time, thank goodness. After we returned to the Strip we spent some time walking around the Venetian before having a panini at a Trattoria overlooking the “Grand Canal”.I found Vegas sort of cute, but very cheesy and trashy. I do now understand the comment I once heard while at the real Eiffel Tower in Paris from an American – his comment was “there are many more restaurants around our Eiffel Tower”.Our final day finished with more cocktails at the Prestige Lounge and a wonderful Ita... read more

Geo: 36.0846, -115.172Today was the major reason for our visit to Las Vegas. We had booked on Maverick Tour's Grand Canyon trip, which involved picking us up from our hotel and transferring us to Henderson Airport for a light plane flight to the South Rim of the Canyon. We were all picked up on time and very early, and transferred to the very small terminal at Henderson. After all of us being carefully weighed which is not so pleasant, we boarded our very, very small plane. At this point I was petrified! Once the plane took off however, the views were spectacular. We were even lucky enough to fly over the Hoover Dam. Once we reached cruising altitude, we were encouraged to move around and even all invited one by one into the cockpit to take amazing ... read more

Geo: 36.0846, -115.172We had to get up very early to be at DCA airport for an 8:00am flight to Las Vegas. Originally I had booked the flight for around 11:00 am but just before we started our trip I received an email saying that the flight time had changed. At the time I wasn't very happy, but today was the day that Storm Jonas was expected to hit, so we started to think that getting out early might be for the best. The airport was in total chaos, with cancelled flights and masses of people trying to get out of town. They had a self check-in and baggage drop system that wasn't very clear to us. I got some help and as we were a group of eight they assigned a staff member to fast track us ... read more

Geo: 38.8921, -77.0241Today was a fabulous day as I finally ticked off something from my bucket list. Since I was young I have always wanted to see pandas. The Chinese pandas toured our home, Melbourne, many years ago, but the queues were hours long to see them and I was seven months pregnant, so we missed out. We then visited Berlin a couple of years ago and I planned to see them there, but sadly they both passed away shortly before our visit. This time we were going to see them at the Smithsonian Washington Zoo.I hadn't even realised that the exhibit had been closed up until three days before our visit due to the birth of a baby panda – I would have been devastated to miss out again, but all was well. We caught ... read more
