York Minster Interior York's magnificent cathedral (called the Minster) is the latest in a succession of churches that have occupied the Northwest corner of this walled town since Roman days. (The Roman basilica's foundation can still be seen in the present Minster's crypt/undercroft/cellar). Most of these churches burnt down; fire has destroyed many sections of the present building as well--but fortunately not all at once. The feisty Yorkists have restored the burnt areas each time, sometimes after long delays. Before the fires, much of the interior decorations and tombs were removed by Protestants trying to purge their churches (both literally and figuratively) of Catholic trappings. Up early again to catch the 0900 train to York for a days sightseeing. The weather was again lousy although the rain was only light and scattered. York is amongst the most beautiful cities I have ever visited in Britain. It is an old walled city with most of the buzz centered around York Minster, a huge cathedral on the northern side of town. We dropped into the Visitor Information Centre to get brochures and arrived at the Minster just in time for a guided tour that lasted about an hour and a half. York Minster is built in medieval style over the top of an old Norman cathedral which - in turn - was built over a Roman settlement. In the crypt below we took an audio tour that demonstrated the different layers and evolutions ... read more

Christine's B-Day just passed and Gem & Gee organised a surprise trip for us to take her to York. It was quite amusing because everytime a sign was coming up on the motorway, we would cover Christine's eyes. It also helped that Christine is practically blind!!! There were 7 girls in total so it was a good ride upto York! A bit of singing, reading & knitting in the backseats. The trip took fairly long, but it worth the wait when we got there!!! Walking to the Shambles area, it so reminded me of Hogsmeade in the Harry Potter movies! I wanted to find Owl's in cages for sale and broomsticks flying in the air, just a bit of wishful thinking!!! I found the town very warm and I loved the outside detailing and how the ... read more

We went to York on Sunday. York is an interesting place with lots of history from different time periods - Roman, Saxon, Viking, Medieval etc. We spent most of the day walking around town, including walking around the wall that goes around the old part of the city. We also went into York Minster (Cathedral). We went down into the basement area, where you can see the remains of earlier buildings on the same site, including a Roman garrison building. - Matt ... read more

After Bath we headed up to York to see the cathedral there. The York Cathedral is HUGE! All the buildings in the town are now occupied but baby Gap and Reebok but the buildings look the same. They have one street where the buildings lean so far out over the road that they almost the other side. The cathedral has 173 steps to the top of its tower. The whole family went up! We were all slightly out of breath at the top though. : ) Of course we had to walk along the top of a roof to get to the other flight of stairs (I hate heights!). I was seeing stars : ) But I did it and we got there. Georgeous view of the other towers and the city. The other cool thing ... read more

I reached the train station and found that I had an hour to spare before my train was due so I took to the streets to see what sights I could find nearby. Luckily for me, York is a beautiful clean city full of friendly people, you only need to board a bus for five minutes before you notice the difference between here and London. As it was a Sunday, I could here a church bell ringing continuously and decided to follow the sound to see what I could find. Exiting the station and following part of the city walls which run through the modern day city, the first thing I came to was the War Memorial Garden close to the river bank and sat there for a while. After that and still hearing the bells ... read more

Hello all, I have arrived at my destination okay. We arrived in London about 15 minutes early so circled the city for that time. Hopped on the Tube and made my way to Kings cross station and headed to York and checked in at the York Youth Hostel, which is a very nice place. Walked around the city to stay awake and advoided jet lag and hit the sac. I am off to explore the city more today after a huge breakfast of cereal, juice, fried bread, fried sausage, bacon, fried eggs, fried mushrooms, stewed tomates and baked beans. Cheers, Michael... read more

After checking into our B&B The Alcuin Lodge, just a five minute walk from the York city walls; we took a walk through 1900 years of history on York's city walls. Built in Roman times, these three and one half miles of Roman fortifications let you see York from a different and very beautiful perspective. They've been added to and rebuilt over time and now have parts from across the centuries. York has a very long and intricate history. I will not get into much of it here, but it is the cathedral city of the Archbishop of York. The Romans occupied the area in AD 71 and built a fortress and wall, traces of which remain. In the 7th century Paulinus became the first Archbishop of York, and Edwin, King of Northumbria, built a church ... read more

Sorry I have been a little behind on keeping up with the journal. I am not sure what I do all the time (ok I know some of you are thinking she goes and enjoys the drink! That is not always true!), but I am sure it is something exciting! I just want say thanks to everyone who has sent comments! I am such a nerd because I get all excited when I get one! Then again I am the strange person who gets excited about the shiny things in the grocery store (I miss wal-mart). Well as I sit here and eat my malty flakes I will tell you the tale of York. My mate Amy, lives 2 doors down from me, invited me to go with her to her home in Hebden Bridge. I ... read more
