Yesterday I travelled to York with NESS, the National Exchange-Student Society. NESS is a student-run group that brings exchange students to different areas of interest in England. They take us there together by bus, but once we arrive everyone is free to go wherever they please until the set meeting time. York is in the north of England, approximately two hours from Nottingham. It is a medieval city that dates back to the year 71 AD, with "some of the best preserved historical buildings and structures in Europe." It feels like an old, quaint city because its streets are mostly made of stone or cobblestone, and during the day many of the streets are closed-off from car traffic. York was captured by Vikings in the year 866 AD...which explains the abundance of people dressed in Viking ... read more

We were fortunate enough to have Butler setup family stay weekends for all of us in the program. As a group (9 of us) we took the train to Wakefield at 5pm on Friday, February 2nd. The ride was only about 20 minutes and we were picked up by our “families” at the train stop in Wakefield. My friend Nicole and I were assigned to the McCollum family. Our “mum” picked us up and took us home where we met the father and daughter, Claire (21). They were a very kind and welcoming family and, best of all, made us TONS of delicious food!! Friday night we had dinner at home and then went out to the local pub with Claire and some of her friends. It was fun to be outside of the university scene ... read more

I got to York with no problems, though had sort of regretted my decision to begin conversation with an older English guy on the train, who kept drinking beer and got a bit obnoxious. I was not prepared for how small York is. I walked literally 2 minutes from the train station, outside the walls, to the hostel, inside the walls. Again, it was pretty dead as people were heading north. That first day I probably saw nearly all of the city. I went to its most famous landmark, the Minster (Cathedral), which is the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe and is the seat of the Archibishop of York as well as the cathedral for the Diocese of York. In addition, Constantine was crowned emperor here in AD 306, so it has a plethora of ... read more

I've decided to create this travel blog for my family and friends, so this is a just a test. I'm currently working in York on visual effects for "The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey" (with Tom Berenger and Joely Richardson), going back home to Luxembourg mid-December for Christmas and New Year's, then off to the other side of the world with Harry Potter (aka Charles Lamb). The whole purpose of this entry was actually just to test this little thingy: I also created this, which is a map of all the countries I've been to... Would be great if I could win that Euromillions jackpot tonight so that I can fill it up! Visited Countries Map Anyway, time to get... read more

Hello my dears I think...this would be one of the last entries, because I've only 1 week left and I don't think that much will happen. So...today we were in the York Minster. It's the biggest and oldest gothic church in North Europe. We had a guide through the Minster and the history is really interessting and I loved this place. I've some photos for you but from the inside because the minster is so wide and high you can't take the whole minster on a picture. So the pictures (only one not) from the outside are from the internet. It wasn't easy to take pictures because the light in this minster is very special...so pls be not so hard with my pictures:) The History of York Minster If you want to know something about the ... read more

First of all...your week till today was not really interessting. We're all looking forwart to fly back at 21st October and so...we hope, that the last 2 weeks pass very fast. Now back to your tip to the Castle Museum. We finished school a little bit earlier because otherwise we hadn't enough time for the whole museum. Then you can see how york was in the Victorian time or you can see the social history of york, the military history and the custum history. Social History The Castle Museum houses a remarkable collection of objects telling a story of every day life from the past four hundred years. These nationally designated collections include probably the best collection anywhere of British household items from 1600-2002. The parlour represents the best room in a middle-class home, during the ... read more

Today was a really normal day...it was boring and I think, we're a little bit sick and tired of the College. I cannot say why, but it is like it is. The only thing was interessting on this day was the Treasurer's house. Informations about this house The Treasurer's House is a beautiful, historic building in the care of the National Trust. Originally the home of the Minster's Treasurer, the Treasurer's House may be found behind the Chapter House on the north side of the cathedral. From shortly after Norman Conquest until the Reformation, it was the treasurer who had the responsibility for the Minster's silver and the treasures. In addition, the treasurer also acted as host to Royal and ecclesiastical visitors. Radulphus was the first treasuere and he received his appointment in 1091 However, the ... read more
