Geo: 51.9425, 6.02767After a really solid night out on the town on Thursday with Jonathan in Arnhem, I was feeling weak and weary this morning (Friday). Woke up, had breakfast and off I went in the car with Joke to see some things. Our first stop was the Openluchtmuseum (open air museum).Well i mentioned my journey to Beamish in Durham, well this was much the same from a Dutch perspective. Plenty of old trams, old windmills, model houses and the like. We arrived here around about 11am, and met up with Jojanekke for the day, who was nice and really good fun. After the Openluchtmuseum, we headed to the Kroller-Muller museum. This place had a fine art collection of paintings, sculptures, and other art forms, including many pieces by van Gogh. We spent a few hours wandering ... read more

So I havent written in a bit because not much has happened. Let's see... Saturday I went to the market with my mentor Jeffrey. He introduced me to Poffertijes: the most heavenly doughy sugary things ever. I'll definitely go back and take pictures of them. We hung around the market, didn't buy anything. It was raining pretty heavily on and off while we were strolling through the vegetable stands and then all of a sudden, WHOOSH SPLASH!!!! Yep, a liter of dirty tarp water splashed all over my head. I'm not a girly girl, so I'm not exaggerating when I say a LITER (maybe even more). My head was so wet that water poured all down my face and my neck. Lovely. The rest of the time with Jeffrey went downhill after that as he started ... read more

Geo: 51.9425, 6.02767Well despite all the controversy with organising flights ive finally arrived back in the Netherlands. This time to explore more of the country and get to know my Dutch background and relatives. I touched town at Schiapol airport near Amsterdam around about two o'clock, and soon thereafter was greeted by my relatives; Jan, Joke, and Jonathan. They introduced me first hand to the terrible traffic this country has to offer, and ive just recently unpacked at their house, just near Arnhem. Ill be staying in Jojanekke's room until Sunday afternoon, when i have a flight booked for Paris. Its almost dinner time, and ill soon be meeting the third (and eldest) child of this family, Bram. Everyone seems really nice here, n im looking forward to the next few days. Ill chuck up pictures ... read more

Went to see the relatives for a very long weekend with my parents. We stayed at Vaals - a town near(ish) Maastricht in a holiday park. It had a pool and sports stuff to do. Took all of Friday to get there - thank god for Ipods. On Sat we visited Maastricht where I discovered a Miffy shop - me and my mum spent ages in it! On Sun we went to my dad's home town and went to church and looked at my Opas grave stone. We had a big family lunch. Not speaking dutch I was a bit left out!! Played squash and went for a swim with my mum when we got back! Son Monday we visited some villages and went to see my Aunt who is in a home for people with ... read more

On the way to Kenya, we had a 14 hour layover in Amsterdam. Our coworker Robert had told us of the shift system in the red light district - as one might imagine, mornings are not ideal working hours for the attractive Ladies of the Night. So, our first order of business was to see the phenominon for ourselves - the elusive 7am prostitute. We were having trouble actually finding the street until we were directed by a nice young British women on her way to class. As we walked trough the district observing the many young dredded out hippies rolling joints at 8am, a woman made eyes at Rick from her booth. This caused him to literally jump and break into a brisk walk over to the next street. Aparently, thinking about it still gives ... read more

I haven't written again yet, because it suddenly seems a daunting task because so much has happened recently... But the longer I wait, the more news piles up, so here goes: Aside from the same-old-same-old classes and going out, I recently had my first test since coming to Groningen. It is in my Dutch language course, and incidentally, is not for points. In that course you get a "passing certificate" if you simply attend 75% of the scheduled classes (which meet twice per week). The tests are just supposed to show you how you're doing. Good thing it wasn't for points, cause I didn't fare so well... The dictation was a problem, as the teacher always speaks in Dutch in class, BUT, I hardly ever know what she's saying, let alone how to divide it into ... read more
