Two weeks ago, I was in Amsterdam with my friend Sarah (from Seattle). From Tuedsay at noon until Wednesday at 9pm, we wandered the city. It was my first time in Amsterdam (well, first time outside of the Schipol Airport/trainstation), and my first time in a hostel (if you've been to a summer camp like many of the ones I've been to, consider yourself hostel-ready). We got in a noon, and it rained all day. We walked from the Central Station (in the north of the city) to our Flying Pig hostel (in the south), and by the time we got to the Pig, we were soaked. Especially me, with my pants too long and soaking up all the puddles until my pants were wet up to above my knees. We dropped off our stuff and ... read more

Hello again, Well, finally have a huge chunk of time and unlimited internet access! Currently in Rotterdam, finished the tour, so I'm warning you now, this will be a long one. We left Paris and headed for Switzerland. Really long drive day, but totally worth it! Totally fantastic scenery, and we arrived in this valley that was really something out of a movie. We were staying at Lauterbrunnen, this little village, which was great. Just beautiful. Nothing exciting that night. The following day was possibly one of the best things I've ever done. We had an optional to go up to the top of europe, the highest point, calld Jung Frau. Took a train after breakfast all the way up 3000+ metres, and it was freezing, covered in snow, and totally fantastic. The views were amazing, ... read more

Okay, so the title is a bit dramatic, but I sparked an interest perhaps? =) The past few days have been pretty crappy. I try to keep my spirits up, but I'm sick with a runny nose, throbbing headache, and I lack the ability to call my dad and complain about my ailements. Today I went grocery shopping for some fish and stopped into a store called DA! to find a pick-me-up elixer or something. The closest I found was a bottle of echinacea and vitamin C fizz tablets. Hopefully this will get me on my feet and I can get back to....studying for my exam on Thursday. I'm about ready to book my hostel in Firenze for November, but I have some options. Do I choose a shared dorm male female mixed with 12 people ... read more

On October 15th, I went with the International Student Organization ('Wings') to Camp Westerbork, a Nazi camp in the northern Netherlands. It was a day trip by tour bus that was actually only 5 hours total, but it was really interesting, and I'm glad I went. There is actually basically nothing left from the camp at the location; in the 1970s, the Dutch government asked the jewish community what they wanted done with the site, and the jewish people didn't want to be reminded of what had happened, so they requested it be demolished. There are currently raised mounds where many of the buildings were, and a few have a reproduction wall at two of the corners, just to illustrate the scale. The only things left are a bunker where cabbage and potatoes were stored ... read more

English-readers: This blog will be in Dutch only, sorry. (for friends & family) Hallo daar!

There's nothing much to report other than exams are next week. Fortunately I only have one, but I'm still kind of nervous because I don't know what the teacher is expecting. It's on the readings (about 30 articles - some long, some longer) so I'm going back and rereading every article and taking notes about it. It's a big pain, but it's worth it. The weather is up and down here. Some days have been cold and the wind is crazy here. With no hills to block the wind, it just hits everything in it's path. I definitely have to give more time to ride to the university now. I think yesterday's ride back from my last Dutch class did me in. This morning I woke up with some pressure in my head and the sniffles. ... read more

After having a great time in Belgium (despite so many people telling us it was not worth a visit), we headed north to The Netherlands. We started in Rotterdam for 5 days, which surprised us by how much it had to offer. After resting the first day, the second we did a self-guided walking tour of the city, checking out the port, buildings with the coolest and most modern architecture of any city I've seen, Chinatown, some parks, a tower, the river and the city. That night found a great Thai/Vietnamese restaurant and ordered things without knowing what they were before continuing on to a little pub called Vitte Ap, or White Ape. Here we met a funny Mancunian (guy from Manchester) who kept buying us drinks all night. Also came across a group of five ... read more

On the 23rd, Luke and I headed off on our two week trip through europe. We began in Amsterdam, which to be honest, didnt give our trip the best start!!!! When we arrived in Amsterdam the first thing we needed to do was find accomodation, which we thought would be simple....until an hour and a half later, when we had walked around the whole city in the pouring rain at night with our backpacks on being constantly informed by each hotel that they had no occupancy! Finally, we found a little hotel, in which we got a terrible room covered in grafiti and reeking of marijuana!!! So, then and there we decided that one night in Amsterdam was enough! However, the next day we decided to make the most of the day and still try and ... read more
