One of Jeff's favorite bands (AILD) was playing in Amsterdam and we managed to find a cheap flight and we were off for a fun weekend! Short synapses of our short trip: --wandered EVERYWHERE it seemed, trying to take it all in (this was my 4th time visiting but there's still something new to discover every time!) --self-toured the Heineken brewery --saw an improv comedy show at Boom Chicago --floated along the canals on a small boat tour --visited numerous coffee shops --ate at numerous scrumptious little cafes And the whole point of our trip! We saw As I Lay Dying, Protest the Hero, and Bullet For My Valentine at the Melkweg. Little did we know when we first booked our room for the weekend, but it was a hop, skip & a jump away from ... read more

Yesterday morning I woke up around 9am, bundled up and headed to the train station to meet a group of fellow international students to embark on a day trip to Utrecht. A little bit of history/facts thanks to wikipedia and me asking questions: Utrecht... is the 4th largest city in The Netherlands has a major central train station that goes pretty much anywhere in the country has about 280,000 inhabitants is older than Amsterdam. Utrecht was first built by the Romans in 47 A.D.! one of the windiest cities in The Netherlands The facts go on and on since this beautiful city is submerged in history. Pre-Utrecht Of course, it was raining so when I got to the train station, I was soaking wet. I locked my bike at the station and as I walked away ... read more

Yesterday- I was a bit bored, so I messaged a guy I met through my friend Kristin to see if he wanted to meet for a cup of coffee. He wanted to ask me some questions about Seattle and UW because he plans to do his masters degree there starting next fall. The whole day yesterday was clear, dry, and cold but the minute he messaged me back it started to downpour. Lovelyyy. So I bundled up nice and warm: long wool jacket, long gloves, extra long scarf wound around my neck and chin about 5 times, a winter hat, and legwarmers. As I rode to the city the rain kept coming down even harder! By the time I got to the cafe De Geus, I looked like a drowned rat. We met at 9pm and ... read more

The train pulls into the station at six o'clock in the evening. You throw on your backpack, grab the smaller daypack, and join the crush of people leaving the station. You've never been here before, but then again, it's just like all the other stations. It isn't difficult to find your way out. The people at places like these move in herds, all you have to do is follow the crowd. The only thing that sets you apart is the fact that you are carrying everything you own and even if you know where you want to go, you don't know where that is. You might face a language barrier, a different currency, or bad timing, but there's a certain desperation of finding a bed for the night. Once you're in the city of choice, ... read more

Greetings all, As the resident expert on Holland, Meg has let me take over duties for blogging today. This is Cam by the way - that's right, not just good for making a monkey out of myself in photos. So what's with the weird title? Well, after leaving our fine German friends, we caught a train to Amsterdam. Our journey started badly when we we're unable to buy tickets at the train station and ended up paying almost double for our tickets on the train. This is due to the machine not accepting notes or credit cards, but the ticket inspector would cut us no slack. So Meg's first impressions of Holland we're unfavourable to say the least. Our hosts in Amsterdam put us up for the next two nights and showed us a little of ... read more

Welcome to our travel blog. We're Noortje and Tom living in the Netherlands. For months we have been planning our trip to Patagonia (Argentia and Chile). (see trip map for details). Originally planned for beginning of this year, later we decided to move it out to November and finally December was a better choice. Hopefully we still will see (killer)whales in Puerto de Madryn despite the fact that we are there in December. One of the top events during our trip will be celebrating new years eve at the beach with our Dutch friends Mark&Ingrid and Jeroen & Dionne. Our travel agent Anderlicht www.anderlicht.nl has been of great help to get the trip planned ans organised. Via this site we'll keep you posted!... read more

To start this blog off, I want to thank those that requested me to write more. As this is my first blog, I am new to the experiences that having a blog bring - I find some of the times, I'd rather just talk outloud and the blog will write itself, while other times I want to sit for hours and write a novel about one experience. Since I came here I've never had so many thoughts going around in my head at one time. I thought my brain was busy back in Seattle, but now it's working 24/7 even when I sleep. Last night I had a vivid dream where I went bungee jumping from a bridge over a raging river...and something to do with cats, but I forget. I find myself reading my book ... read more

Beste Lezers Het is vandaag dinsdag. Groeten Femke en Rob.... read more

Apart from nearly being run over by bikes and trams, Amsterdam was a great place to be in! It definitely was more then I expected it to be, and Lou and Justin made the experience even more fun! The thing I couldn't get over was the bikes everywhere! I heard about the bikes, but I wasn't expecting what I saw! I wasn't sure what I was expecting! Anyway, I got a bit obessed taking photo's of them... When we arrived in Amsterdam, we took a train to Central Station, and then the Metro to Waterlooplein. I had photocopied a map before hand and we marked where everything was including our hotel, so we didn't have too much of a problem finding our hotel. Once we arrived, we dropped off our bags and started straight away. Our ... read more

Amsterdam! What would a semester abroad be without at least visiting this interesting city? It actually is a very beautiful city once you get out of the Red Light District. And the coffee shops are actually extremely cute and I think we visited almost all 200 of them that are located in Amsterdam. The Van Gogh and Rijk museum are probably two of my favorite museums EVER. The Rijk houses many of Rembrandt's pieces, and although part of the museum was closed, it was still great. The Anne Frank house was probably my favorite, despite the fact that I was fighting tears while I was there. I went by myself because half of my friends didn't go and the other half already went and I am really glad I got to experience that alone. It is ... read more
