This weekend was great. It was actually refreshing to get out of Holland and see how different Germany is - which it is. The train there was fun and Nina and I talked, listened to music, and I entertained her by trying to read a German magazine. My Deutsch is not so good... We walked around Hannover and then on Friday, we walked around Hildesheim. I liked Hildesheim a lot better - there are older buildings, the streets are mostly cobblestone (which are kind of hard to walk on), and the feeling of the city is more relaxed. But it makes sense because Hildesheim is smaller than Enschede! So during the day, Nina got her haircut and we just browsed shops and went to a typical German supermarket. The Dutch like their cheese as the Germans ... read more

This next set of entries will be mostly pictures as it will memories from a previous trip and I would hate for my words to distort or fog over the truth of all that has happened. As I look over my travelogs from time to time, it looks incomplete to me without the story of my first trip overseas. This trip would start, as it should with any rightous stoner, with a mecca to the holyland.... Amsterdam. This trip would also mark the biginning of my travel addiction. One of the things I still recall most vividly about Amsterdam is all of the damn bikes. The dutch ride their bikes very fast, and they do not take kindly to stoned tourists wandering around the city. I higly recommend visiting Amsterdam with a friend, if only so ... read more

So today is our last day in amsterdam, we started the day off by going to the farmacy and getting me some cold medicine for 1€ which is even cheap in usd. Then we went on a canal cruise which was relaxing but to tell the truth, not very informative, it basically went around the whole city on the same canals that jenny and i walked on the first day we were here. There were not really that many sites that we hadnt seen or they were so small and insignificant that we just walked right past them when we were walking. But it was a really beautiful day today, the sun is shining and for the first time since we got here there is no haze over the city, so the boat ride itself was ... read more

I had the most eventful Sunday since I arrived here. Amsterdam doesn't really stop moving on Sunday, unlike Enschede. All the shops are still open, so yesterday I decided to visit the famous Vondelpark and then go to the Leidseplein for some window shopping. I borrowed Agatha's bike again since she had to study and was on my way. I've pretty much figured out the layout of the city - if you're ever lost, just find the Amstel canal and then get on one of the main streets. As I was biking, I noticed the road blocked off and a group of police motorists directing traffic. Hm...maybe it was an accident? Nope. Every year, Amsterdam has this large marathon through the town and this Sunday just happened to be the marathon day. Great. The marathon started ... read more

Let me preface this post with a disclaimer: This Amsterdam entry is not going to be filled with tales of wild adventures. I'm not particularly keen on putting any such adventures, which may or may not have happened, in a public place such as this where they'll sit in Google's cache for eternity. So, what you have below might be boring, and for that I'm sorry, but you'll just have to use your imagination... I took the early afternoon ICE train from Cologne to Amsterdam. This was my first border crossing by rail and I was interested to see if there would be some sort of border check. As it turns out, there was absolutely nothing, and we rolled into Amsterdam around 5. I was actually a little disappointed with how easy it was. I just ... read more

So sorry for not writing for a while there but i was really busy for a few days there and couldnt find the time to write. But anyways we are in Amsterdam now and it is a really different city. we got here at about 7 pm on friday and the sun was just going down and it really seemed as if there was a permanent haze around the city. Once we got off the train and into the streets, my first thoughts were that it was a real filthy city and i really wasnt getting a good first impression. there were people everywhere and they were all either real stonner looking kids or real stoner looking old people. We got to our hostel and it is the coolest hostel we have stayed in so far.... ... read more

Hello again, Amsterdam! It's sure nice to have a change of pace from what I'm used to. Amsterdam is full of tourists, people, cars, buses, dogs, boats, you name it. I took the train from Enschede yesterday afternoon. I caught the train right on time with 2 minutes to spare, after buying a discount train pass that gives me 40% discount on any train ticket I buy in the Nederlands. It's good for a whole year, which is cool because I plan on coming back here in June after graduation. Anyway, on the train, the ticket guy came around and I showed him my ticket - he told me that I'm actually on the part of the train that goes to Schipol Airport. He told me to get off the train in Deventer (about half way ... read more

Geo: 52.308, 5.13412So before I knew it, it was already my final full day in the Dutch countryside. Up fairly early, fed, and out. The first destination for Jan and I was the region of the famous "bridge too far" in arnhem, or today, known as the "Frost Bridge" after the British commander who valliantly fought to defend it.The bridge was quite nice, but the nearby museum much more informative. The "Airborne" museum, was full of information regarding the region of Arnhem, and the Netherlands in the second world war. It was full of war artifacts and items, a video, and assorted info. From here, we returned for lunch, before heading out towards Alblasserdam to meet many of my relatives including; Betty, Jan & Lina Struik (and their daughter) and Dik. Our major outing was to ... read more
