I arrived tired but safe. The flight was great and very crowded. Upon arrival and once cleared customs and all that, I headed for AMEX to meet some friends. The adventure begins... read more

With a staggering 10 hour wait ahead I board the train to Schipol airport. The airport is by many standards rather impressive and includes things such as a deck to watch the planes do their thing. I spend some time in an empty part of a restaurant until a couples tear filled fight prompts me to leave. Much of the airport closes down and killing the time becomes tediously unbearable. I have no more than a few cents so my time is spent sitting and staring off into space. If I fall asleep just once I could miss the flight, so I situate myself in a sitting position that makes me fall forward within a few minutes of falling asleep. Perhaps its nerves, but a bag of oddly named chips doesn't sit well and I ... read more

This morning I woke up naturally at 6:30am, a horrible horrible hour. I couldn't sleep for no reason at all, so I just poked around on the internet and spoke to my friend who just returned from India and had jet lag. I finally crawled back in bed and slept for another 4 hours. I guess it takes more than 3 weeks for me to get used to everything - especially not sleeping on a futon. =) After waking up, I checked my email and received the weirdest and funniest email ever. Yesterday, I sent my landlord, Arie, an email because he had some mail. I also wanted to let him know that I finally set up a bank account and I'll pay him for rent. I still haven't paid him for rent at all...and he ... read more

Hallo allemaal! Groetjes Petra... read more

Next stop.......Amsterdam!! After the worlds shortest flight (especially compared to the first haul), we touched down in Amsterdam at Schipol airport. We once again loaded up the back packs and headed off in the direction of our hostel. We dumped our bags very quickly and went to witness the best of Amsterdam! There are some beautiful buildings to be seen and finally we found some COLD BEER! Heineken was the beer of choice and with two for one at happy hour, we couldn't resist. After a few cold ones, we headed out on the town. The canals that travel through Amsterdam are surprisingly clean. The main mode of transport in this fine city is push bike.....we were quickly introduced to this when Matt nearly got run over at the first intersection. Its amazing to see the ... read more

I've landed in Amsterdam. Am chilling at the airport waiting to catch my flight to Zurich. Playing on the web and people watching. Should be in Zurich by early evening. I'll be back in Amsterdam to tour for a couple days at the end of my European vacation and look forward to truly seeing it versus just saying I've been to the airport. Nice airport with lots of shops but lots of cigarette smoke. (Several hours later...) I'm in Zurich! It's early evening. City looked so very pretty when we were flying in. It's dark now. Am excited for my day tomorrow and plan an early start. Have my map marked up and will be ready to go!... read more

The line to go through security at the airport was enormous. In fact it was so big that there was even a waiting area to get on to the end of the line. We cruised through eventually and after a short flight, we arrived in Amsterdam. We caught the train into the centre and away we walked to our hostel. The smell of marijuana fills the air and sex shop after sex shop is an overwhealming sight. We hike through the seedy streets, cross the hundreds of canals while dodging thousands of push bikes. We dumped our stuff at the hostel and went down stairs to the bar where happy hour was in full swing. Too many beers later, we went out to experience what pretty much every tourist comes here to do. The famous Coffee ... read more

The train trip to Amsterdam goes quickly and before I know it I am there. I make my way down to the taxi line and hop in and head to my accommodation. I am not too far from the station but my fare still comes to 10 euros. Methinks that their meters must be on superfast because I took longer cab rides in Paris that cost half as much. My room is the size of a shoe box but has a bed and cable tv so what more could you ask for! I set out to start exploring and right from the outset find myself getting lost. Although I have a map, the streets are labelled quite poorly or else I am just inept at map reading! I walk around for half an hour just trying ... read more

As I was reading some scholarly articles on the couch, Chiel turned on the tv and I couldn't help but watch what was happening. I guess today is a special day in The Netherlands when the Queen Beatrix reads to the public the results of the government's decisions on where the country's money will be divided and what portions will go to which departments (i.e., roads, healthcare, schools, etc). It happens every year and it's always the third Tuesday in September. This whole thing happense in The Hague, Netherlands, and is called "Prinsjesdag" or Prince day. She was seated on this gigantic golden throne, wearing a gold and black silky looking dress. Her hat was the best - gigantic, stiff and golden with the rim bent upwards so that you could pour water in her hat ... read more
