I was on my bike for most of the day yesterday. I normally don't have to wake up early on Thursdays since my class starts at 1:45, but yesterday I had a meeting at 10am with a man named Huub who helped me set up my online student account and assign me the classes I'm taking. It was a little painful waking up at 8:30- I think I'm a bit spoiled here with my late classes. =) After the meeting, I rode into town (about 20 min) and went to the bank so they could open my online account since I got all the dandy paperwork. I also got some information about the discount train card. It's 55euros and for a whole year you get 40% every train ticket you buy. So that got me thinking...if ... read more

NOTE: Due to computer issues (again!) I don't have any pictures for this blog. Hopefully I do have pictures for later (I am having trouble reading my photo disc). Just as well as I don't have many photos from our time in Amsterdam anyway. The last stop on our tour was Amsterdam. We took on last dip back into Germany on our way. Leaving Switzerland, we ducked into Austria and then into Germany. However on the way to the Rhineland, we ducked into France, stopping in Strasbourg for a quick lunch, a visit to the cathedral, and a ride on the local carousel (in the rain). We also got chased down and stopped by French customs, but they let us off without any issues. Back in Germany, we stopped in Heidelborg for a few hours. This ... read more

So I started my Dutch course today. It's really great. My teacher is named Janny "Yanni" and she's in her 60s and told us that the only way for us to learn Dutch is if she speaks only Dutch to us. She is definitely right - I just didn't understand a lot of what she said today, haha. My class is 11 people: me, a chinese girl, 3 french guys, 2 spanish girls, 1 portugese girl, 2 german girls and 1 polish girl. It's a good mix and everybody is just as clueless as I am. We have a workbook and a cd, so I'll hopefully be much better at Dutch. yay! I haven't blogged in one or two days just because the excitement is dying down. I mean, I'm still enjoying every moment, but I'm ... read more

Once again, Gretchen and I are on a train. Gretchen is eating a salad with no dressing (the lady at the station forgot to put it in the bag), but hey—it’s healthier that way, right? I am still savoring the aftertaste of another Belgian waffle that I polished off in the train station in Brussels. It’s interesting for me to think that in the last almost two weeks we have been in France, Germany, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium, and now we are headed to the Netherlands. I honestly woke up yesterday morning, and it took me a minute to remember which country I was in. And I can’t tell you how many times I have had to stop to think whether I should say “Thank you,” “Merci,” or “Danke.” In two weeks I have gone through more ... read more

OK, I said in the last blog that I'd be typing this one from the UK. Make that home in Australia. I did type up a blog in the UK, but the computer I was on farted and I lost it all. I spat it and refused to retype it, so here are the last few blogs typed comfortably at home with a refreshing beer. Now, the train ride to Amsterdam. Claire and I, as I mentioned decided to wander around Berlin revisiting a few places to take photos. We were a bit too casual and had to rush back to the station to catch the train to Amsterdam. After rushing our bums off, we made it to the platform to be told the train had been delayed by about 10 minutes or so. Since we ... read more

Well here we are, Welcome to Sin City. Ive walked the Red Light District :-D (be carefull of the purple lights- they're she males!) However, there are some interesting things about this capital. Went on another tour and learnt about Rambrant the artist, about the way the houses are built, how they got there silly surnames and saw Anne Franks house and the smallest house in the country (1.8 metres wide). Chris You would have loved our US tour guide. His vioce touches a nerve (and he's a bit patronising). Oh and btw, i finished Da Vinci. Now i want to go back to Paris! Met an Aussie guy who is with us for another day. Reminds me of an older version of Big Dave. Very chilled and says 'eh?' at the end of every sentence. ... read more

Last night after talking to a good friend of mine on Skype until 2am (my time), I crawled into bed really ready for some sleep. But then my eyes fell on my David Sedaris book that has taken me forever to finish. Sedaris is my favorite author and so I think I have been milking this book for so long because I don't want it to end. There are few books that I've read where I actually laugh outloud as I'm reading. All of Sedaris' books have made me do so. Anyway, I was about 50 pages from the end, so I stayed up until 3:15am or so reading. It's been a while since I've finished a book cover to cover since boring school readings usually rob my eyes and brain of any pleasure reading. My ... read more

I've realized the reality. As this is the first time I'm in a different country by myself, without my family, without anybody I know, and without the ability to speak the national language, I was initially gung-ho and didn't know what to expect. I'm still "gung-ho" (thats such a weird word...) but last night really put it all into perspective: I'm not a native, I will never be a native, and not everything here will be as easy as it is in Seattle. It's not something I mind, but now I'm prepared. Last night there was this welcome party for the International students at some building in the centrum called Asterion. Nobody in my house had ever heard of it, but no worries, we looked it up. Should be easy to find. Janne, Anouk and Chiel ... read more

I’ve been feeling kinda blah the past few days, sleeping all day, and then being tired cause I slept too much. One of my usual funks, I guess. It doesn’t help that I only have class from Tues 6-8pm, Weds 12-2, and Thursday 10-12 and 6-8pm. No real incentive to get out of bed… But alas there is! I’m in the freaking Netherlands! Two of my friends have already planned a trip to Italy during our week of in October, and I’m realizing that I need to get off my butt and actually travel! October 6 I’m going to a sort of trance music dance festival in Amsterdam. I think its gonna be really fun. They play a lot of trance and electronic type music in some of the pubs/dance clubs, and I love it! ... read more
