Formula One in Rotterdam... An interesting day filled with rain, more rain and topped off with thunder, lightning and even heavier rain! Couldn't see the cars through the rain but managed to get in the newspaper as they thought my good looks deserved a "Hunk de Rotterdam" nomination!... read more

A friend of mine that I met last year when working in Wales lives in The Hague. She was kind enough to let us stay at her flat for a few nights. We got into Holland Spoor train station around 1pm. I have to mention the public washroom at this station. It is worth the 50 cents! There are fresh flowers and tea lights on the counters, an array of perfumes, lotions etc at your disposal, candy dishes full of toffees and mints. And a display case of jewellery for sale. It is one of the only bathrooms worth its fee. (The only other WC that was impressive was on called Mc Clean, yes it is a toilet chain throughout Europe). My friend Irene picked us up and we just relaxed for most of the day. ... read more

The idiotic smile remains on my face even as I board the ferry to Holland. There will be no tears shed on Englands behalf, not that it is that bad, but I've just had enough for now. However will the Netherlands really be any better ?, or will it be the cestpool of moral decay that it is often portrayed as. For a boat of its size the ferry moves incredibly quick and I'm actually dissapointed that it only takes about 3hrs. The ferry is more comfortable than any place I've been in the last week. During the trip I cross reference my map of Holland and my contact list and decide that my first stop will be in Den Haag to visit my aunts friends. It seems like everybody on the list is a ... read more

What a mixed day! It is still a heatwave here in Holland - one of the flattest countries in the world, yet we went snow skiing today. We started the day with a trip to the pancake house, which serves up some delicious pancakes with all kinds of ingredients imaginable. I had a bacon and apple pancake, others had italian pizza pancakes, banana and apple, cheese and mushroom, and all sorts of other niceties. It is a rare treat, but when you are in the flattest country in the world, and it is 32 degrees, the last thing you would expect your host to suggest is to go snow skiing. However, there is an indoor snow park near where we are staying. My uncle has been there for staff development days, and my auntie had lessons ... read more

Seeing the Netherlands by boat is a magnificent way to get an appreciation for the lifestyle here. Today we hired a boat and cruised all through the canals of Leiden, Oegstgeest, and Haarlem. The boat we had was called a sloop, and fit 6 of us in comfort while we puttered around. The city is very beautiful from the water, and there are some amazing homes set right on the edge of the canals. Meandering down the canals on a hot summers day, beer in hand is a tough way to live life. Every part of the city is accessible by canal, so theoretically you dont need a car to get to almost any place in the country. It is also customary that you must wave and say hi to all other boaters as you pass. ... read more

Yes, this is my Blog turn! The ‘misa.whereareyou.net’ was causing negative spillover effects (spam reactions!), so I give now the chance to travelblog.org … some of you might argue that this is not the most adequate blog as I am not exactly travelling (except for an occasional trip preferably every few months ;-) but I found at least 135 reasons to justify it: 1) We are actually a huge travelling platform. We have our cells making huge trips in our bodies all the time! 2) … 135) I just read that ‘there are 134 molecules and they all count as travellers in the vast interstellar space’, so why can’t I? So, what happened in June? I went to once the city of the Towers, now the city of the Bridges (you guessed well, Prague! :-) and ... read more

Holland was another chance to catch up with family and relax, and finally the weather started to warm up. We went to Bruges and Gent for a day trip, which are both very picturesque historical towns in Belgium, tasting some of their world famous beers and chocolates going back for seconds and thirds etc! Another day we visited an area close to where we were staying and took a boat cruise down a canal to see all the windmills. We also went to a place called Medurodam which is a like a miniature model of the main attractions in Holland - it is quite an amazing place where it is done to replica on a scale of 1:25. Lastly we visited Gouda which is known for its Cheese, of which we naturally had to taste and ... read more
