My body clock is starting to get into the routine of getting up at the right time, which is a good thing since Lenny drove us into The Hague on her way to work. The main reason I wanted to go to The Hague was to see the International Court. Lenny had given me bus passes the night before, but I had somehow misplaced them. I didn't discover this until we were on the bus, but we pinched a couple of stops before we did the right thing and got off. We weren't entirely sure where we were going, but we ended up outside the International Peace Palace. This was confusing for me, because everyone had told me to come here, and while it is an impressive building I don't think it's what I'm after. Our ... read more

...SSDD was also another potential entry title, but it was rejected for possible negative connotations that I feel degrade the cheerful spirit of my ongoing European adventures. And go on we shall. I'm back again for the third time. First it was 6 months in 2005, then 2 weeks in January 2006, and now another month (or maybe more) here in March. I'm here so much it's getting comical. I've run into a few people at work who are like, "hey, I didn't know you were still here!" and "wait, aren't you based in Houston?" Deja vu seems more fitting. I've gotten the hang of this whole international travel thing, I think. I've stopped paying attention to the pre-flight safety demonstrations. (This may be due to the fact that Continental stewardesses seem to be generally less ... read more

Even though we had had a nap the previous afternoon, we somehow managed to sleep until 11. We awoke to an empty house, as Lenny, Joyce and Misha had gone down to the shops. Soon they were back, and Beck made everyone sandwiches for lunch (breakfast for us!). After lunch Lenny took us to the town of Delft, which Beck had been to when she was younger, and she remembered it as a pretty town with a church in the middle. Lenny drove us past hot-houses to show us the local industry, and they all had schlotes (spelling?) around them, which is like water in a ditch surrounding the land, but they aren't as big as canals. All of the cars we have seen are tiny compared to America and Canada, and lots of people get ... read more

Well I guess one of the pleasures of working where I do is the chance to travel to the other offices in different countries, and this was one of those times. We were setting up the office to be connected with our computer network in London. We managed to get most of the stuff done over the Friday and Saturday which allowed us to do a bit of sightseeing on the Sunday.. ... read more

...and the party never ends. At least it didn't this week. It's now almost 4 on Saturday and all I've managed to do is check email and eat some cashews. I finally had the opportunity and ability to get in a full 12 hours of sleep, so sleep I did. It feels good, since it's been a busy week. Monday After 3 months away, the Shoarma pizza from Pizza Dennis never tasted so good. The sweet taste of victory, however, was not ours to be had, as we came in 3rd place with 57 points, which really stinks since the other teams scored 58 and 59 respectively. I blame the music round since the only thing I knew among the assortment of Euro dance pop was Shaggy's 'Boombastic'. Tuesday Ton, being the sociable Dutchman he is, ... read more

Ok, so you'd think that for something as simple as a few paragraphs of attempted wittiness that I could keep this thing updated at least a few times a week, but here I go again falling into weekly reviews. I have my reasons. That being said, here's as painless of a recap of the first work week of the trip as I can muster: First, the whining: About the blog title... I think those guys said it best in 'Pinch Me.' (Ah, such high hopes for an interesting entry crushed so quickly!) "It's the perfect time of year Somewhere far away from here I feel fine enough, I guess Considering everything's a mess" Oh man...has it been a rough couple of days. Lots of emotional stress over Kat going to NYC coupled with extremely little sleep ... read more

Duty calls, and Brian answers. Especially when it involves an expense account, business class travel, and catching up with the NL gang. For lack of a full line of American television, and thanks to the marvel of hotel WiFi, the blog is back in action. So yup, at the request of my 'colleagues,' I'm back in the Netherlands for a quick 2-week stint to try and kick some ass and take some names. Thanks to the help of a seasoned last-minute packer and Village shopping veteran (Katherine, you're my hero), I was able to get packed up and ready for the trip the day of the flight, including the procurement of one super-swanky overcoat at a mere quarter of the original retail price. Sweetness. Why did I need to go out and get a big new ... read more
