Yesterday Bram was off of work and his brother Sjef and friend Robbie came to visit us. We went to Scheveningen first to have some Sangria on the beach at Peukie's (It's slogan is "the real American taste" but it reminds me of the word puke which makes me laugh). After that we had a 3 course dinner at a restaurant near the hotel Bram works at and it was delectable. After that we went back to the Hague centrum where we went to a nice bar with outdoor seating, it was perfect for a nice summer night. Bram and I ended up going back to the apartment after that because we were exhausted but Sjef and Robbie went to a club and didn't get home until the wee hours of the morning. We all had ... read more

Well today since Bram had to work from 10am to 7pm I decided to take a bunch of photos of where I usually bike. I've started biking to Scheveningen with Bram when he has to work to pass the time and also because I think it's fun. So by going there and back we usually bike around 10km per day. I think the things we pass are pretty cool so I thought I'd post some photos for everyone to see. I also stopped by one of the parks near Scheveningen and rode on the paths through the woods for a little bit. Other than that I did some grocery shopping and I'll tell you, it can be pretty tough carrying a huge bag of groceries on the back of your bike! Anyway, here's some sweet photos... ... read more

This whole week the weather has been great. I've been to Scheveningen everyday trying to soak up the sun and quit looking so pasty white. I didn't get a chance to go to Amsterdam Thursday, but I'll do that as soon as I can. Anyway, here's some photos from the past couple of days....... read more

Today Bram and I decided to see more of the Hague since we live here now. We went to a castle that was built in the 1200's called Binnenhof. It was pretty cool, I've got a lot of photos. We went to another castle called Noordeinde (sp?) but it wasn't as interesting because you couldn't really see much of it. We also went to the beach in Scheveningen and had a couple of drinks at a cafe on the beach called Bora Bora. It was a beautiful day so we made the most of it biking all over the city. Good times. In job news, I'm headed to Amsterdam on Thursday for advice from the US consulate on getting a work permit....wish me luck! ... read more

So today was Queen's Day. Bram's family came into town and we decided to go to Scheveningen to celebrate the holiday. (That's basically a part of the Hague that's by the sea.) We went to a restaurant called Crazy Piano's and it was really fun. They had a lot of pianists from all over the world who can play pretty much any song you request while you eat, drink or just chill. After that we went to a place called Peukie's for a drink and it was pretty cool too. From what I've been told this wasn't your typical Queen's Day but I had a good time anyway. ... read more

Hey Everybody! So here I am in the Hague in our new apartment. So far everything's going pretty okay. We're finally a little settled and staying in one place which is great. The kitchen is a good size and the bathroom is huge. The livingroom/bedroom is not so big but it's livable. The job hunt is still the major issue. I did however submit my resume to an international jobsearch agency and they sent me back a questionnaire. (www.octagon.nl) I filled out the questionnaire and now the next step is that they put it in their database and try to match me with a vacant position. I'm hoping that will be helpful but I will still continue to apply to various companies as well as go to the US Consulate in Amsterdam for advice. There is ... read more

Well I survived Amsterdam and had a great time in Rotterdam. What can I say about Amsterdam? I didn’t much care for the area around the station- otherwise known as the Red Light District. I dared not venture into its confines at night for fear of my virgin eyes. I got there in the late afternoon, so after I found my hostel I set out for a walking tour of the city. I found all the points of interest that were in my guidebook and really enjoyed my walk. Once you get into the more residential area along the canals it is really nice and pretty. Just some places get more attention than others. In the morning of my second day there I went straight to the Anne Frank House Museum. It was really really cool. ... read more

I decided it would be fun to join Liz, David and Julian in the tulip-filled country of Holland for a conference on DNA Repair. Unfortunately, due to the late spring, there were no tulips to be found. Just fields of stems and buds waiting to open. I did feel sorry for the bus loads of tourists on their tulip-viewing holidays - apparently the flowers are usually guaranteed in April. There were, however, plenty of clogs and other 'dutch' goodies in the conference shop, as you can see in my picture with Liz. The week consisted of lots of talks, viewing posters, and eating with scientists. I took advantage of the flat land (my legs aren't very strong) and hired a bike from the hotel for a wee tour round the local area, finding a lovely big ... read more

Well, one more week down and I'm starting to feel a little fat and sassy, to quote a Don Hertzfeldt cartoon. I sit around at work all day, I'm helpless to resist the variety of the Shell cafeteria at lunch, and living out of a hotel forces me to eat out every night. No such thing as a hotel gym in the Netherlands, and I'd rather buy all new pants instead of going joggin around The Hague in rainy, near freezing weather! Case in point: today I had half a chicken for lunch and in the course of this week I had a 16-course tapas dinner, a Thai smorgasbord, and a steak dinner. I think I might've done like 40 pushups one night, but the balance is clearly in fatness's favor. I did however manage to ... read more
