Hello all, welcome to my travelblog! The coming months I'll be travelling and working abroad for most of the time and through this blog I'll keep everyone up to date. I'll be posting all my entries in English. These coming months means much to me, it's like a dream come true and I'd like to share it with all of you. I hope to see some reactions from you, I'll appreciate that. Those who know me a bit better, know that travelling has always been one of my dreams. As a kid I was always interested in other countries, languages and cultures but I didn't had the opportunity to travel much. But I'm happy to have the opportunity now. Some of you know that since the end of May I've been working many extra hours ... read more

Visited Toni at work today after a lovely night´s sleep in their loft. Woke up to rain on the window above my bed. Loving Den Haag. Couldn´t bring my camera in to take a picture of Toni in her robe and bib (this is the UN after all, they have rules), but it was awesome to see her at work. At one point they were cross examining some guy about where some bodies were buried and I was watching Toni working at her computer. I turned to my mom and said ¨Isn´t she cute?¨What can I say? She was. I´m so proud of her and can only expect more great stuff. We stayed for about twenty minutes and met her for a break, then headed off to find a place for lunch. Ended up in ... read more

Përshëndetje! (just learned how to greet in Albanian ;-) By definition it is summer, but there is not much of it to be seen in the low lands … except on 13th of April, the day of Rotterdam’s marathon, which had to stop after 26 marathoners were taken to hospital (fortunately the professionals had finish it already, so there were prizes to be hand over). I got though some sun in Portugal in May! I had the chance to ride in the new metro of Oporto, which goes till the airport! ( Nothing utterly especial, because that is how it should be – you may think- sorry to disappoint you but that’s quite some achievement, given that the equivalent has been ‘planned’ for Lisbon for the 98 Expo, and after almost 10 years, Lisbon’s metro ... read more

I took the 45 minute EasyJet flight to Amsterdam yesterday, it was a rather frighteningly noisy plane, but we made it fine... It was beautifully sunny when I arrived and my friend Karen picked me up and drove me to her place in Rotterdam which is my favorite apartment in the world. Unfortunately we woke up to rain and its quite miserable in good northern european style... Lots of new about flooding in Bangladesh.... uh oh.... (sorry for the short and rather pointless post, just wanted to make sure my little brother got the link....) ... read more

Financial crisis, recession, bad times. Reality in 2009. But it wasn’t always like that. Only a couple of years ago companies had money to spend on their employees. And they did. Gather the troops from across Europe in on the beach for an all-day event. Put them in a luxury hotel. Let them wake up to boring meetings in the morning. Let them play the teambuilding game in the afternoon. Let them party at night. Afternoon in Noordwijk, and time for the teambuilding event; a treasure hunt by bike. Divide them up into teams, give them a GPS handheld device, hand out the bikes, and off they go. The sun is shining, it’s warm, it’s a lovely day for biking. Problem is, it’s unclear where. For maximum fun for the organizers, and for maximum difficulty and ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » South Holland » Keukenhof May 19th 2007

For a place that really is really only open for about 8 weeks a year and especially if you love spring flowers, and more especially tulips, there's no place better than De Keukenhof not far from the village of Lisse, The Netherlands, southwest of Amsterdam. This remarkable park is transformed every spring into a dazzling, ever-changing display of tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, crocuses, lilies, amaryllis, and many other flowers. There are also flowering shrubs, ancient trees and countless natural surprises, as well as themed gardens to explore and pavilions filled with displays, and of course, a windmill. A number of sculptures and other objects d'art can be viewed on a sculpture trail among the flowers throughout the park. The park has somewhere near 10 miles of trails and walkways among its 70 acres for you to ... read more

To put it bluntly, Rotterdam kicks Amsterdam’s butt. It’s a beautiful, clean city with some really amazing, modern architecture. After having visited there I really can’t understand why everyone raves about Amsterdam so much and hardly anyone talks about Rotterdam. I was invited to go there on a roadtrip just last weekend with four French guys; JB, Greg, Olivier and Mathieu. It was a last minute decision - they invited me on Wednesday night and we were in the car and leaving Strasbourg by Friday afternoon. It was so exciting to leave Strasbourg by car. In fact, it was pretty exciting just to be in a car at all considering I haven’t driven for almost four months. I had my face pressed against the window like a dog pretty much the whole way! Coming from Australia, ... read more

Our third and last day with Syliva, it was fun to take her to a place she had never been in all her years of Amsterdam - the Keukenhof Flower gardens which we were told were the largest flower gardens in the world. Sylvia had never been simply because its such a touristy thing to do, plus its only open very few weeks of the year so we were lucky to catch it on our trip. It turned out to be such a beautiful way to spend the day and not too touristy - much less crowded and great to wind down after Queens Day. The afternoon saw Craig go and play golf at Noordwijkse golf course while Sylvia and Kellie sat in a cafe on the beach and sipped Ice Teas and relaxed. Once ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » South Holland » Leiden March 30th 2007

This weekend was one of the highlights of my exchange. Gali and I traveled to Leiden and to the Keukenhof. As many of you know, Holland is famous for its Tulips and its Windmills. This trip consisted of both of them. Leiden is a small city in the south of the Netherlands. As you walk from the train station to the center, you pass Leiden’s windmill. We went inside and climbed to the top, learning about the different windmills and the development of the windmill. From the top there is a magnificent view over parts of Leiden. The old area is made up of small streets and canals with tiny shops throughout. Walking through the streets is very scenic, romantic and relaxing. We ate lunch in a citadel at the top of a little hill in ... read more
