Aviad and Sophie arrived around 22h and picked me up on the way to their hotel, which they booked off of Groupon. The hotel was just past lala land but served its purpose. We ate a delicious restaurant called Cafe Sirocco just off Rue Cartier where we shared a plate of 25 tapas and some tartar. Shawna and Eric picked us up there and we headed to Beaugarte for lots of dancing. The next morning we woke up and set off for traineau de chien, a.k.a. dogsledding. Picking up some Timmy's bagels, coffees and chocolate milks, we were ready for the day ahead. After some wonky directions on my part, we arrived at Pourvoir du Lac Beauport (www.pourvoiriedulacbeauport.com) for our dogsledding. It was awesome!!! We split up into tandems and after a 5 minute demo set ... read more

The semester concluded with a bang and with some great new friends. After my last exam Wednesday, I headed over to Hugo's where we light the Chanukah candles and had some drinks consecrating the completion of the semester and my law degree. Afterwards we went to the P'tit Grenouille for some dancing and live music. Thursday was for recovering and packing until the boys went for dinner at Ocean Grill, a bring your own wine on Chemin Ste-Foy. The company was fantastic, the food mediocre and the service horrible. From there we went to Maurice on the Grand-Allée, one of Quebec City's largest and most famous clubs for the end of semester party. A great send off. But no night out is complete without the breakfast crew gathering for one final meal. Back to Cochon Dingue ... read more

Gali came to visit me in Quebec City during my second week. It was a great way to start the semester since we were able to explore the city together and do some of the touristy stuff. She arrived mid-day and we quickly headed out towards Parc national Jacques-Cartier for a picnic and afternoon hike. After driving for just over an hour, we entered the provincial park and found a nice spot (around marker KM 12) for a picnic lunch. We took our time under the sun surrounded by the green scenery and rolling river. After the picnic we drove out to KM 16 where the trail "Les Loups" starts. On the way, we saw some cars pulled over and curious to see what the fuss was all about, we pulled over too and there was ... read more

I was able to go on a few day trips during my semester in Quebec City. The surrounding areas are beautiful and rich with culture. This blog is intended to help people who are planning similar day trips or day excursions. When I tried to find information - there was not much. Hopefully this will help. Hiking in Parc National de la Jacques Cartier Parc National de la Jacques Cartier is a provincial park about 1.5 hours north of Quebec City. The drive is easy and there was no traffic except for on the 40 and 440 when you return to Quebec City during rush hour. The park is well marked and laid out. About 10km into the park there is a welcome center with an information desk and small shop. There is also the option ... read more

Two international flights and 30 hours later, we landed at Toronto Pearson International Airport at about 17h00 local time on August 28th, 2011. Following disembarkation, we went through the customs formalities and passed through round one of Canadian Immigration, we then collected our bags and passed through the second immigration check where we handed in our “white slip” and had that moment of uncertainty as to whether today was going to be the day that we were pulled over to have our bags checked. Luckily today was not that day and we passed through the first set of doors, where we were to put our baggage back on the belt so it can be loaded onto our final Montreal bound flight. As we walked through the first set of doors, we were welcomed into Canada by ... read more

We arrived in Bangkok Friday morning and after settling in at our hotel, we set out to discover as much of Bangkok as possible in 1 day. We started by taking the skytrain to a boat bus dock. After asking numerous people if we were in the right place and waiting, we discovered that the boat we wanted to take was no longer running for the day because the part of the river it travels was closed for a practice run for a royal function. Based on the suggestions we had been given we decided to wait for another boat bus and take it to Chinatown. The plan was to then walk from Chinatown to the Royal Palace. While the boat bus was worthwhile since seeing Bangkok from the river is essential, as is a walk ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang August 23rd 2011

We arrived in Luang Prabang, Laos which is set at the confluence of two rivers that almost surround the town, and beneath a temple-topped hill, Luang Prabang is a wonderful patchwork of traditional Lao wooden houses and hints of European architecture, reminders of when Laos was part of the French colony of Indochine. Golden-roofed wats (temples), decorated with mosaics and murals of the life of Buddha, sit under the gaze of wrap-around teak balconies and 19th century shuttered windows. All of this is set against a backdrop of verdant greenery and rugged mountains. (Description from WikiVoyage) Upon arrival at our hotel we walked into town and had a bite to eat. Our hotel was a 15 minute walk just out of town along the Mekong river. By the time we got to the hotel it was ... read more

Our time in Hanoi was split into 2 parts sandwiching our trips to Halong Bay and Sapa. PART 1 The first leg of our stay in the Vietnamese capital and economic center of the north started with a very lazy day. We took our time eating a delicious breakfast, then walked around for a while as we visited more than enough travel agencies to plan our trips to Halong Bay and Sapa. Before we left the hotel, we sat with their travel desk to see what the overall story was and how competitive their rates were. After visiting the different agencies, we decided to go with our hotel as the rates were the same and booking with them allowed us the flexibility to change our hotel reservation if something changed and in the event of a ... read more
