We boarded the 9 hour night train to Sapa from Hanoi Wednesday night only a few hours after returning from our beautiful Halong Bay excursion. Having showered, repacked our little blue matching packs and Pho for dinner, we were off on another adventure. After settling in to our 4 bed (2 bunkbeds) train cabin outfitted with clean sheets and complimentary bottled water, we anxiously awaited our cabin mates as we heard some horror stories from other travelers about whom they got stuck with. We were pleasantly surprised when we met the Austrian couple we would be sharing the cabin with for the evening, both university students in their 20s. After chatting for just under an hour and swapping Vietnam travel experiences as well as advice, we all called it a night as we would be arriving ... read more

Departing from Hanoi we set off for the 4 hour mini-van ride to Halong Bay where our 3 day, 2 night cruise departed from. The beauty and uniqueness of this place cannot be described in words but we'll try... After the 4 hour ride, we set sail through Halong Bay on a motorized "junk" sailboat steering through freighters, tug boats and other ships. As we received our welcome watermelon fruit smoothies - Seth was in heaven... we were already able to see some of the over 1,960 islets of the greater Bay area. Stunning! From afar they appeared as a mountainous range, however, as we neared closer they were in fact massive rocks somewhat covered in greenery jutting out of the water and peaking at heights up to 330 feet. We were on a ship called ... read more

We arrived in Hue at about 6pm after a beautiful 4 hour busride through mountains, beaches and small towns along the eastern Vietnamese Coast. We checked into our 18$ a night accommodation, Huenino Hotel, where we stayed for one night. Upon arrival, we were given watermelon slices and egg sandwiches, also, the staff were so courteous and the rooms were clean - thanks to trip advisor for the suggestion. That evening we walked to the Perfume River, which has played a vital role in shaping Hue's history. It was very pretty, having a long boardwalk lined with street vendors. We then walked a little longer and opted for a 45 minute $5 foot massage. Following that, we had a tasty dinner, which was composed of 4 coke lights, 2 Hue style Rice pancakes filled with tofu ... read more

We arrived in Danang bright and early following a short however turbulent flight. Other than a sticky substance covering Gali's backpack (we were compensated 10$ to go and clean it) things were all good and we were ready to tackle another Vietnamese town. We boarded our hotel transport, which drove us 30 minutes to Hoi An - the town of tailors. After checking into the 4 star Hoi An Pacific Hotel we jumped onto the complimentary hotel bicycles, which were our main mode of transportation for our 3 day 2 night Hoi An stay. Ideally located, our hotel is right in the middle of the beach and old town, about a 2.5 km bikeride either way. First stop, laundry drop-off (Thank you Vietnam airlines for sponsoring all our laundry cleaning this whole trip - the $10 ... read more

After a seven hour bus-ride from Phnom Penh, we arrived in Ho Chi Minh City. The border crossing into Vietnam was a breeze and we only needed to disembark the coach bus in order to pass through customs with our luggage and then reboard the same transport. We were entertained by two Hollywood movies and a series of Jennifer Lopez dance videos being played on the bus' t.v. - random. After speaking with another traveler who did the same journey, we found out that his bus took advantage of the music videos and sang along. We made it to Ho Chi Minh City at about 9pm and were dropped off in the backpacker's district, also known as District 1 - this is where most tourists find accommodation. Our hotel was a short walk away from the ... read more

After a 6 hour busride, we arrived in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. The ride wasn't too bad as we got to see much of the Cambodian (Khmer) "countryside" - very interesting views... So poor and all of a sudden you'll see a multicolored, huge, golden gate - leading to nowhere... The homes are on 8 foot high stilts so as to avoid being wiped out by flooding. The exposed underneath is used to work, hang hammocks and TRY to escape the heat. Also - the cows are all so skinny... We were told, that this time of year is when they are at their plumpest, to give you a better idea - we could count their ribs. We arrived in Phnom Penh at 4pm and our hotel was 4 doors away - sweet location ... read more

Our 30+ hour journey to Cambodia finally came to an end with a cheap, reliable and comfortable flying experience on Bangkok Airways into the quaint and spotless airport of Siem Reap. The "Chinese Architecture" like airport definitely made us feel as though we entered Asia. Arrival was great - passport control was simple and easy since we were able to pay for our Cambodian visa on the spot (20$ USD each), Gus and Michelin (our backpacks) were waiting eagerly after we passed through immigration and Mr. Dim was waiting outside to drive us into town and start our Cambodian adventure. We exited the airport in Mr. Dim's air-conditioned Lexus (who would have thought- are we really in Cambodia?!?) to transport us to the Borei Angkor Resort and Spa Hotel. This was a free service offered by ... read more

The journey started in Montreal at 11am on Sunday morning and hasn't finished just yet - we are waiting in the Bangkok Airways complimentary lounge for our last leg to Siem Reap and if all goes according to plan, we will be in Cambodia by 10am Tuesday morning (11pm Monday in Montreal). It wasn't that bad - thanks to great service the whole way and lots of movie watching (6 each) - the time flew by (anyone catch that pun?). Seth read a book on the way called "First They Killed my Father" by Loung Ung who recounts her experiences surviving the Khmer Rouge years under the Pol Pot regime. We will write more about this dark and sad part of recent history when we visit the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh. We landed in Bangkok ... read more

Happy Birthday to moi, Happy Birthday to moi. Well yes, but not really. Today wasn't my actual birthday, just the day I got to cash in my gift. For my birthday, Gali's parents got Gali and I tickets to the Canadiens' hockey game in Ottawa. Of course, the gift included dinner at the Works (one of the best burger joints around)! Gali picked me up from school and we headed out towards our country's capital. As we reached Jean Talon, Aviad, Gali's brother gave us a call and decided to come along. His friend Steph had invited him to the game so he drove to meet us and we all continued west. Arriving in Ottawa was traffic filled but the radio kept us company as we sat and sat and sat. After picking up Steph we ... read more

Randall started the ball rolling with this ski trip about a month ago suggesting we head for a ski weekend over our last reading week vacation as students. I was able to re-connect with an old contact (Gord Roy from Ski Rod Roy) and next thing you know, 11 of us are heading for a ski weekend at Mont Sainte-Anne. Randall picked me up at 6h00 in the darkness of the morning and then we headed to pick up Fombonne before hitting the road pre-rush hour. Chris and Marie were already en route about 15 minutes ahead of us and we connected at Timmie's somewhere along the road. Chris was sporting a nice set of longjohns showing the world how proud he is. We arrived in Mont Sainte-Anne around 10h30 and were on the slopes by ... read more
