We came back early from Lake Como to be in Venice for Redentore... which is quite possibly THE most amazing party ever. Here's the story: back in the 16th century when the plague ended, Venice erected a church dedicated to Christ of the Redeemer to give thanks for the disappearance for the disease. The church is on Gedeccia (I still can't spell) which is not on the actual Venice island so they built a bridge from Venice leading up to the steps of the church so people could get there. To this day, the pontoon bridge is still built just for that night across the canal. The night the church was completed, they had a huge party to celebrate and it was sort of like a mardis gras idea of a night of sinful celebration. The ... read more

Last Thursday our professors took us to a nearby town for a formal dinner...in a genuine castle! We were required to take etiquette lessons beforehand and to follow all the rules. Many of us felt a little silly, but we really did enjoy having a nice dinner all together. It was a good time, and the view was beautiful. Afterward, nearly all the students headed to Epoca for the evening where we had lessons in the international versions of "If you're happy and you know it" and where we sang "Country Roads," which, if you know me well, is mandatory. Update on the weekend in France coming soon! I'll just let the photos speak for themselves for now.... read more

NOTE: This was meant to be sent last Friday. Just wanted to send a quick update on my week before I head out to France this weekend. On Tuesday one of my professors took my class to the small town of Passagno. This town houses Il Tempio and is the hometown of a famous sculptor. Il Tempio is a round temple that is actually a church. It was built in the 1800s (relatively new by Italian standards) and is modeled after the Pantheon (the oldest building in the world, in Rome). The inside was absolutely beautiful and had elegant sculptures and detailed frescoes. For a euro 30 (about $1.56, I think) you could climb the stairs that spiral the building and walk to the top of the dome. After my experience in Vatican City I decided ... read more

Ahhh Venice, we will never forget it for both the good and the bad memories. In the good ones category we have some unforgetable panoramic shots, everywhere you look we had some amazing postcards come alive in front of our eyes. We went to the Murano glass island and saw some master glass blowers at work and to top it off saw the most amazing concert one afternoon while sipping some sangria. The concert was actually a couple playing for money on the street and they were soo good we wonder how long they will be doing it. As if all this was not enough the canal next to our little concert had the added bonus of having a gondolier class. Hard work I tell you, if we had not seen the poor student almost wreck ... read more

I had less than 4 months to do some sightseeing in Italy. I was lucky to get 2 fast trips to Venice and Rome. There was a boat stop with my name on it in Venice. In Rome, I was allowed to go where most people couldn't because a friend is a firefighter for the Vatican. Gotta love connections. My stay in Italy was too short, but I know I will be going back every few years.... read more

We arrived in Venice at 9.30pm and got lost with our suitcases before eventually finding the hotel. Wednesday we went wandering the streets. We went for a walk to Piazetta San Marco and saw the Basilica di San Marco (and then on Thursday we went back to go up the campanile Bell Tower for an aerial view of Venice). It is quite neat walking along the streets - there are no cars, just these crazy little streets with high buildings on either side and lots of little shops. The map didn’t make much sense and we got lost every single day we were here. At night when we went for dinner just off the Grand Canal these pushy Italian people at restaurants keep pushing themselves upon us. We were bullied into sitting down at one place, ... read more

Being that we're in a different country, of course we had to start class on the 4th of July. But after class, we all went to the grocery store with our carrying carts and got lots of American bbq food. We got hamburgers, hot dogs, budweiser, veggies, and watermelon and then had a big bbq with the people in the house, the people outside the house, and one of the Italian students. Then we walked her home and got a drink. The nap was nice, too. ... read more

sorry it's been a while since my last update and this one will be short. i'm in expensive internet country and frustrating keyboards again. the rest of st johann was amazing. just really nice to take it easy and have a look around the countryside. i did end up going paragliding and it was amazing!!!! probably the best thing i've ever done. it was so relaxing and just an indescribable feeling of flying. i got to steer and everything. i got 40 minutes in the air which i was very lucky with because i know of others who only got 10 minutes because it really depends on the wind and it changes instantly. we also did tricks and acrobatics which was pretty cool too. i also went on a 3.5 hr walk up to some waterfalls ... read more
