We had a killer storm here on wednesday night and after all the heat and stress of our days, we all let loose and ran around like wild things in the rain and hail. One italian boy that was with us, was saying that we were running around like chickens, but bfore we knew it he was untying his shoes and running in. Ive uploaded a few pictures, and I promise to be a better blogger when I get home! ... read more

Ok, so technically I'm not in Venice (I'm in Asolo), but I did depart a plane, ride a bus and catch a train there. It was beautiful to see the mountains as I flew in. I could even see the Alps from the Milan aeroport (oops, Italian is already rubbing off)! Lots of water and people out on boats from what I could see. Didn't see any of the famed gondolas, but there were lots of motor boats just like in the states (reminded me of going out on Cheat Lake with my WV friends!). The castle in which I am staying is beautiful and modernized (minus A/C). I'll send pictures when I have time. Right now we are off to an orientation meeting and then a dinner in the village. Here's some funny news: tomorrow ... read more

Venice is so completly unlike anything Ive ever experienced in Canada that its like Im imagining it all in my head. I keep having to pinch myself, or else maybe throw myself in the grand canal. For the record I havent dropped anything in the Grand Canal or fallen in myself. We met a local boy here named Jacopo ( Yakopo) and he told us that people rarely fall in and that the last time he heard of it happening is two years ago when a girl fell off a vaporetti (water bus) and they had to stop and go back for her, they threw her a life ring, and then collected her. We walked around Veince the other day, as we had the morning off. We shopped like tourists, it was great. We even got ... read more

Erin and I have successfully met in Venice. It is so great to see a familiar face. We have had a fantastic time. We got an all-day pass for the ferries and saw so much of Venice today (so what if we can't afford gondolas). We went to Murano and saw the glass blowers. It was fantastic fun. Tomorrow we will hit the Bascillica di San Marco, some cemetary and the beaches at Lido. We are just dying to swim. Today we got creative and made bruchette for dinner. And of course the cheapest wine on the shelf was better than anything in the States. I'm pretty sure that I'll never camp again after this trip. We are at another camp ground and just booked another for Florence. One night we are going to stay in ... read more

Didn't really get much done today. Took us a while to track down a Fedex to ship off my Murano vase. I have a lot of fingers and toes crossed that it gets back home alright. It's considered precious, so the shipping companies won't insureit for private individuals. We finally got into Basilica San Marco, and it's quite spectacular inside. The ceiling is very much in the Byzantine style, with hundreds of thousands of tiles (most golden) forming elaborate mosaics. I discretely took a few pictures. After that, I just wandered around for a bit. Did you know the Venetians even have an island cemetery? That's right, the whole island is one big cemetery. I was going to catch the 8:30 bus back to the campsite, but as chance would have it, I met up with ... read more

Had a bit of a late start this morning. Living out of a tent makes getting ready much more complicated (starting with the fact that you actually have to walk a fair distance to the sinks, toilets, showers, etc.). Ended up taking the 10:30 bus into the lagoon. The late start was kind of good in a way - I was up late last night doing laundry. I wanted to hold out, but one of the disadvantages of packing light (3 pairs of underwear/socks/shirts, etc.) is that laundry duty sometimes calls at unfortunate times. Anyways, had a full day in Venice. All I'll say is that Piazza San Marco is one of the busiest places I've ever seen. We headed for it right away after we got into Venice (well, as fast as you can get ... read more

I absolutely adore Venice. The city charms you the minute you cross the tiny man-made strip of land into the lagoon. The city also guarantees that you'll get lost in it. I have probably the best map money can buy, and my companion Gabrielle and I still had one heck of a time navigating the streets that are 2 meters wide, with buildings 4 stories high on either side. Oh yeah, did I mention that street signs are relatively rare? I was hoping to get an evening meal in some secluded place, but the guidebook's listing was closed for the month. We ended up in a slightly more touristy place. The bill wasn't really surprising - this is Venice after all. The only snag today was that since I didn't prebook, we're in a tent ... read more

Ciao to you all! I cannot believe that it is already time to say "arrivederchi" to Asolo. I'm definitely having some mixed emotions about the good-bye. On the one hand, I can't wait to be done with studying (one final down, one to go this morn!) and I'm very, very excited to get on with my travels. However, I'm also going to miss this little town so much! When most people think of Italy, they think of Rome or Florence or Venice. Now ... I will always think of Asolo. :) We all made our way down to Epoca last night for some final memories. The owner of the bar gave us all free t-shirts! My Service Marketing classmates and I have decided that he is the epitome of quality service and relationship marketing that we ... read more

I have just spent three beautiful days in Venice, or Venezia. If you ask to catch a train to Venice, the ticket person will just look at you strangly, then ask if you mean Venezia. When I was catching the train from Bologna Venezia sounded close so I jumped on the train. Since the train was departing in approximately 1 minute and I had to get from the window to the platform I thought "If this isn't Venice I am going to, I'm sure it will be nice anyway". I arrived and checked into the hostel and started exploring the city. The vaporettos, or water taxis were neat and the city was very beautiful, especially the Piazzetta San Marco but I didn't really start to enjoy the city untill I started to just wander. All the ... read more

Ciao! Have I mentioned that I cannot wait to be finished with classes? Unfortunately, one of my exams got pushed back to Friday and it looks like the other one will be moved to Friday too. Grrrrr. No real reason for these developments -- all I can say is that "bureaucracy" is apparently universal. Enough about that. They managed to stuff us again last night! We had a huge dinner at the agriturisomo (from the first week). Of course, this restaurant is located way at the bottom of Asolo. In other words, the night consisted of another walk up the giant hill with our bellies full. Oh, and it was raining again. :) As I've have told some of you, I am looking forward to walking the level ground of the Midwest again. I feel like ... read more
