Geo: 44.4063, 8.93386September 28, 2009 ~ Genoa, ItalyToday was a good day in Genoa, Italy ~ pronounced Genova or Gen-eeww-wah, depending on who you talk too. Hubby & I were up at 7:15am and decided to have breakfast in the dining room where we sat with two older ladies from England that spoke and had mannerisms exactly as you would imagine two older ladies from England would speak and act ~ I was fascinated! They take this cruise every year and had several suggestions for our day tomorrow, in Villefrance, France. They were also a delight to be around and I loved them. The other tablemates were a talky couple from Boston that were also incredibly interesting and quite entertaining. I thought breakfast was a joy and could barely quit smiling or laughing whereas I believe ... read more

hi bloggers! I and francesco stayed in Genoa city for 2 days. We accomodated at the starhotel, a beautiful and luxory hotel! (we aren't rich but we stayed there because my father left us some points cumulative of his job's travels) This is why we stayede in this hotel. The room was large, the bed was kingsize, in one word wonderful!!!! The breakfast was splendid. All in these days was beautiful. The weather wasn't so beautiful as the hotel, specially in the second day. In fact, only when it has stopped raining, we went to one of the not much sandy beach in all the Liguria: Chiavari, a very nice place! We recommended to you! This travel wasn't so full of actvities: we went there quite only to do the bath in the sea:) Luckily soon we ... read more

We made it to Genoa later at night, and were lucky to have our couch surfing host pick us up and take us out for incredible pasta. Seriously it was amazing with fresh noodles and to die for sauce, once again we were in heaven. Italy was definitely a lot about eating for us haha but WOW, i don't know how anyone manages to be thin in this country! After wards he took us to see a beautiful older part of town which used to be a little fishing village. It was very beautiful at night. We were up early and out walking around the city the next morning, we went to a bell tower and saw an amazing panoramic of the city. We were also able to go see the House that Christoper Columbus lived ... read more

So I made entirely the wrong choice in friends here in Italy. I also just realised I seem to start every single blog with the word 'so'. Anywho, I have somehow managed to be friends with entirely beautiful people, including a stunning German girl and a beautiful Swedish boy who could sell me underwear anyday. I realised this the other day, whilst sat on the giant rock that passed for a beach in the absence of sand here (it was much more beautiful than it sounds, and the sea was lovely, so warm and clear and calm). I am the proverbial average looking duckling, or at least I would be if such a proverb existed. I shan't call myself ugly, because clearly I am not. I also realised the other day that I packed entirely inappropriately ... read more

HI THERE, for those with no Italian language skills like me, allora means "and then", and it is used by everyone hundreds of times a day in their speech....so after Sicily and 7 weeks of cycling in high temps of 40 odd and continued sunshine I ferried accross to Sardinia to more of the same but also strong winds coming down from France called The Mistral....what with heat, sunshine wind and mountains, Sardinia proved a difficult destination on the bike and also the 2 million tourists from ITALY that visit every august, after 2 weeks it proved too much so after 450 klms and 5 punctures in one day....ALLORA I ferried across to Genova to visit Stefano who I started the trip with May 2007 in Thailand. Unfortunatly his Dad is very ill only stayed 2 ... read more

Well hello my loyal band of followers! I am once again back in the sunny land of Italia. Dont you just hate me? So yes, I arrived on Sunday, my appartment is a lot nicer than I was expecting it to be, I'm sharing it with a lovely german girl called Anne, and a very nice spanish couple called Dani and (insert name of girlfriend which i've forgotten here). So fun house times, yay. Unfortunately all the other Italian families in the building are rediculously loud at all hours, but it does give me a good excuse for a siesta... Not that I need one (an excuse that is, I always need a siesta). Our house is about a 30 minute walk away from the school I'm studying at, but it's a very pretty walk so ... read more

I came to Genoa planning on only passing through for one night and then continuing on to Cinque Terre the next morning. I decided to slow down a bit and stay for another night and spent all yesterday wandering around Genoa getting a feel for the place. Getting here was a bit of a hassle however. The train from Venice to Milan was full so I had to stand the whole way (2.5 hours), and the train from Milan to Genoa was late. It also didn't take me all the way to the stop in Genoa I needed. So I had to switch trains after asking one conductor from my first train where I needed to be to get to Genova-Brignole. He said I needed a different train and that he didn't know which one to ... read more

Rule #1 of traveling is to avoid sunburns on back, shoulders, chest, and upper legs like death! Fortunately, I avoided the back and my shoulders for the most part, but my chest all the way up to my shoulders and the front of my legs didn't managed to escape. There is a stripe going down the front of my legs, from upper thigh to ankle which makes squatting and kneeling down pretty damn uncomfortable, especially in jeans. But I'm wearing jeans because I don't want to shave over my burn in order to wear my shorts. The worst of it is carrying roughly a 40 pound backpack... it does not feel good when it presses against bright pink skin! Will write more later... just wanted to let you know that I was alive... barely lol... read more

We could sleep in this morning as our train to Genova doesn't leave until 11:44am. We had a leisurely (if not boring) breakfast and headed out into the rain to look for somewhere to buy lunch for the train ride. However, we didn't get far until we decided to get our bags down to the station and go looking from there. It's only 500m walk from our hotel to the station but not much fun in steady rain, holding an umbrella, trying (unsuccessfully) to keep our bags dry. Then Karina went and found some lunch and we waited for our train to arrive. Fantastic - a nice new, clean 6-seater cabin to ourselves. We stowed our bags and stretched out for what was a pretty comfortable 3 hour trip to Genova. In the end we had ... read more

Ciao. We continue to have a great time. We had a great local dining experience last night. The waiter did not speak English and Jim wasn't sure what he was ordering, but all turned out well. Jim also picked out a wonderfully delicious dessert by sight which we both enjoyed. The irony to the dining experience was the owner's children bringing in McDonald's bags and eating the stuff their in the restaurant as we enjoyed our riggotoni with pesto and pasta and seafood. I came very close to going over there and saying "molto malde" which translates as very bad. We go to Cinque Terre tomorrow which should be very beautiful. Ciao. Scoiattolo Genoa is a bit seedy, as fitting for a port town. The old city, where we are staying, is a strange maze of ... read more
