Liguria Region - Genoa and San Fruttuosso, Santa Margherita and Portofino 7 Oct 2013 We set out for the day at about 9.30am, still missing Kerrie & Gemma and wondering how they were dealing with their flight home. The camp site we stayed at didn’t have a functional WiFi so we were without contact unfortunately. So we strove out to Genova arriving at about 11.00am. We found a park near the harbor. Genova is THE major port of Italy. We counted 6 big passenger ships along the harbour. It also has a major ship building industry so there were a couple of ships at different stages of completion. It also has narrow, twisting streets, almost like Morocco. We saw a small section of the only remaining old city wall which was built in 1155. The old ... read more

Not shown much details of campsites I have stayed in, so I want to show you this one in Genoa. The campsite is located near a hilltop about 30 minutes outside Genoa. The hilltop is terraced and the campsite is on 3 layers. From the reception, you can get a good view of the sea. There is a picture of me trying to master the 2-way camera on my phone. The air is fresh and clean but I decided to sleep in the car for the first time. It was a comfortable night and I had a good night sleep. So the plank of wood inside the car can easily serve as a bed too.... read more

Day 9 San Tuesday 11the June 2013 Remo to Genoa Did not get much sleep the night before but at least I managed to get the first installment of the blog done. This morning started at 7 am for me. Did the usual routine of washing, packing, eating breakfast, checking the fuel pre-filter and engine oil before setting off north east for the Italian port city of Genoa. Slept in the car briefly for 30 minutes at a service station and drank a very strong but nice caffe before continuing the car journey. The view along the Italian coastline is just beautiful and I had some of the car journey recorded on video.using my little in-car video camera. Reached Genoa at around 13.15 pm. The car park area had lots of Africans selling their wares to ... read more

Italija mi je zelo ljuba, približno enkrat na leto skočim na obisk k prijateljem, na dobro hrano, na lokalne dobrote, na modne revije Gucci-ja in podobno! Tokrat sem si privoščila dvojno porcijo in ponovila obisk Rima in Genove. Oboje sprobano in potrjeno. Kelnar mi je izmaknil krožnik v trenutku, ko sem na ... read more

At Genoa, Italy, two pilots came aboard. On account of Lyra's size, we had to sail into the outward bound sea lane to give us sufficient space to turn into the wharf area. Once between the wharf and the breakwater we had to execute a three point turn before the tugs and the ship’s bow thruster nudged us into the wharf to be tied off. It was perfect timing all completed quarter of an hour before lunch. After lunch we headed into Genoa in the company of Captain Aurel, Chief Engineer Constantin and fellow passenger Elisabeth. First we caught the shuttle bus across the container terminal to Voltri and then we took a city bus to downtown Genoa. We arrived at the waterfront area near the Aquarium and the “Il Galeone Neptune”, a replica galleon made ... read more

So I'll be backtracking a bit to catch you up. I think I will separate the blogs into chunks, so that you can choose whether you want to read all, some, or none of them. ;) My last day in Toulouse was pretty uneventful. It was pretty relaxed, with no rushing around. I got up late, had a quick breakfast, and went to the Capitole to meet my brother's friend, Olivier. I got a text saying that he was running a bit late, so I texted back and let him know where exactly I was sitting waiting for him. He found me pretty easily, and we set off walking a bit to start the afternoon. He wanted to show me some spots in the city that I might not have already seen, and he was hard-pressed ... read more

Greetings from Genoa :) This Blog Entry will be rather short since it was not a holiday but a business trip. As in a lot of other cities, you have the typical tourist spots, like Piazza de Ferrari (although Genoa is luckily not overcrowded with tourists), authentic streets, and a nice older part of the town. One of the "hearts" of the city is the harbor, which not only hosts very massive, huge (!) yachts, but where also the Aquarium and the Galeone are situated. The Galeone (size: 62m x 16m) is an artificial pirate ship that was part of the scenery of the movie "Pirates". It was finished in 1985 and 8,2 Mio. Dollars were spent to build it. Inside, it tries to impart the way the pirates lived (it even had an internal detention ... read more

Left the ship with some regret - though excited about next stage of the trip. Fast train to Genova took about 5 hrs all up. hotel is great, a family room right near piazza de Ferrari. close to shops, H&M will get a work out here, but am starting to run out of room. day 1. Our mission was to find a laundromat, not easy here, took a fair bit of Internet research, armed with my notes we headed of! Success we found it, the streets are tiny, filled with shops and markets. Greg watched over the washing while the kids and hit the streets, dog spotting as usually and getting a few bits and pieces we needed. all up 2 hours later we were washed and dried. we spent the afternoon looking around and I ... read more

Interestingly all cruise ships smell the same! Our week on the Eurodam was great, a big luxury liner (not p and o or princess standard, way above). 2000 passengers and 900 crew made it a memorable experience. That and the huge cabin, no noise from cabins near us at all, very quiet. We had a queen size bed, one fold out sofa bed, yes a lounge area and one bunk that was put down at night. Policy of this cruise line is they let you buy beer and spirits by the bottle as long as you drink in your cabin - which we did most of the time - they also let you take on as much wine and champagne as you want - we just bought a bottle at different ports but some people took ... read more
