The day started early with small hike to the old Genoa wall where youcan get a good Panoramic of the city. For the life of me i couldn't find my way to the old wall but i did get some good panoramic views! After that i took the Furniculare down to the town. Now when i was told that i could catch this contraptio down to the centre i had imagined that it would be like a ski lift affording beautiful views over Genova. But to my shock it was like a vertical tram.... unusual and an experience. After getting to the centre i wandered around abit of a toursit route looking at all the old Italian Renaissance buildings... there are heaps! after that i went to the aquarium. now i would like to retract my ... read more

Wake up Little Guses! Bright and early for us. Actually, not so bright. Had to be up again before sunrise to catch our train to Savona/Genova up on the northwestern corner of Italy’s coast. Yes, we stopped at the McCafe AGAIN this morning. But in our defense, it was the ONLY place open on a Sunday morning (ahem, and we’re addicted). This is the quietest the city ever seems to be. Sunday is truly respected as a day of rest and few shops are open, especially at 7:00 am. It can be a little inconvenient, but it’s nice to know that the workaholic attitude hasn’t completely taken over. Italians take their time off very seriously. It took us about 4 hours to get from Florence to Savona - whew! We are becoming quite the patient travelers. ... read more

The train ride from La Spezia to Genoa was a pretty one, winding along the coast passed a lot of seaside villages. One thing that I have noticed is that Italy’s population of 60 million is spread out across the country. The biggest city Rome only has 3 million, and where we traveled there wasn’t really any areas where you could look out and just see paddocks, there always seemed to be a group of houses within sight. The only accommodation we didn’t have trouble finding was the B&B in Genoa. But … the man running it also had a job as a pizza delivery guy and left a note saying he wasn’t going to be back for an hour. Not to worry though we found a nearby Pizza joint. I was adventurous and tried Calzone ... read more

The ferry over from Split to Ancona was actually fairly high-rolling. Among the amenities available on board were a restaurant, bar and casino. It was a 10 hour overnight voyage, so I decided to book a bed in a 4-bed cabin so I could get some decent sleep and in the process manage to score a 10€ discount for being under 26 - score! Also, the boat was pretty empty, so there was no-one else in my cabin which was sweet as. The only thing that sucked though was the fact that the journey ended at 6.30am so I was pretty tired as I zombied through Italian immigration. "Did you not sleep on the boat?" asked the officer. "No, not much", I laughed back. The officer though wasn't joking though, as I had held up the ... read more

We have reached the land of the euro-trunk. So many tanned men in euros and I think Sean is a little out of his league. We hired a car from Genoa airport near the border of France and Italy and drove south. We spent two nights at Levanto the town just before the Cinque Terre. Our host was young, tanned, good looking Italian. He had just spent 3 months in Australia surfing . . . LOVELY guy. We caught the train to the furthest of the Cinque Terre, Riomaggiore and hiked the 5 villages. It was hard work but well worth the 4 and a bit hours. From Levanto we drove south and inland to the mountains. We stayed at a B & B in Tuscany in a small village called Bagni di Lucca. Stunning scenery, ... read more

To say that I still can't download any of my photos, to show you all :( But I have been in Genova since Wednesday, and I have had a great time. I met some wonderful people, Vilija has been sooo lucky to have met such nice people here. The Hen's night was a Blast, meeting all these people, and having a Turkish Hammam (not that much like the one in Morocco, I'm afraid. More Gentile. I am learning, slowly, more Italian. Just enough to get me through, I think. I have seen most of what there is to see in Genova (Having reserved the Museums for another time), and have had Pesto Genovese, And my first (and Second, and third) caffe Italiano. I went to a wedding, Italian-Australian style: the bride and groom had to ... read more

Jen and I took a midnight train out of Roma Termini to head to Genoa on Thursday. The cars had really neat seats that folded out into beds, but it was really cold in our compartment and I couldnt get comfortable so I didnt get much sleep at all. There was a nice lady from Genoa in the car with us who told us about some neat places to go visit while we were there. We arrived in Genoa at 6am, but lukily my Let's Go Italy had a 24 hour Bar(cafe) listed, so we went and had cappuccini and cornettas, and did a bible study while we were waiting to check in at 8am to our bed and breakfast. The weather was beautiful, and we got to watch the sun rise as we sat in ... read more
