Well hello my long lost friends. Finally found a computer that has flash, and therefore I can upload some pictures. With this post I will just upload the ones of Genoa, the unofficial capital of the Italian Riviera. Could have taken many more pictures, its an incredibly interesting city with some of these buildings dating as far back as 1100 AD. We actually kindof stopped here on a whim, and Im glad we did. enjoy... read more

As I write this, I am in a small cottage nestled in the forested hills outside of Genova, Italy. The birds are chirping and nearby there is a babbling brook that is babbling something about peace and harmony in its universal language. The peacefullness is so engulfing, so absolute, it almost feels like Buddha is rubbing my tummy. I almost feel akin to Jack Kerouac while he wrote Big Sur, or maybe even Bilbo Baggins as he wrote about his epic journey. Almost. But I’m drifting. I left you last week in the Rhone valley about to head to Italy. My original plan was to work my way up to Chamonix, get on a tram and cruise over the alps into the Valle d’Aosta of Italy. I started right off hitch hiking and was picked up ... read more

More photos... Sorry for all the emails you may have received if you're a subscriber. I've finally figured out how I can upload more than a certain number of photos in one blog entry. I have also realised that I take too many (and am hopeless at taking) photos! I will curb my enthusiasm. I mean, we've all see fish before!... read more

Allora, this is my first blog entry from a foreign country. I'm in Genoa, Italy, from where tomorrow I'll be taking the ferry to Tunisia. The sun is shining but it's bitterly cold, made worse by the strong winds. To get this far I have already visited six countries and used eight modes of transport. The journey to Milan gave me a fantastic insight into the life of lorry drivers. We left a day later than planned due to a guy called Steve, the owner of the haulage firm 'Elton Lines' in whose lorry I travelled. He, apparently, does not like to part with his pennies and so insisted on an early Monday morning start instead of the Sunday afternoon start we had planned (drivers get paid extra if they work on a Sunday). So, after ... read more

Continued… I picked myself up off the road. No significant damage, just some deeper scratches on the side of the bike. I made it to Genova (Genoa) without further incident. Of course the rain began as I pulled into town, which is starting to look like a recurring pattern. I wandered through the city until I reached the suburb of Sestri Ponente. Even though I had started out early, I was now behind the time I had promised Alex I would meet her at the train station. Getting situated I couldn’t find the station, but she miraculously saw me in the street and I heard her call my name from across the way while I was searching for her. I don’t know if you have much experience wearing helmets, but the origin of sounds is a ... read more

Sunday October 25th Off to the backblocks of Genoa Another cracker of a day has dawned and with the extra hour in bed we are feeling pretty refreshed after two days of walking in the Cinque Terre. After breakfast we took a walk up the road from the hotel to the hilltop village. There were only two locals up and about and the woman we passed didn’t return our cheery ‘bonjurno’.However the man sitting admiring the view out to sea did sort of grunt back.We had the feeling that the locals weren’t keen on tourists snooping around their village on a Sunday morning. Neither were the dogs!!We walked up an alleyway to take a photo or two and take a look at what we could see from the other side of the small group of houses. A ... read more

Genoa 25th-27th September. Arrived in to Genoa in the afternoon, after driving through the picturesque coastal hills of north-western Italy. We checked in on board Saudade, for a three night stay. The boys were up early to watch the AFL grandfinal live. After that our tour guides (Polly and Mike) took us to Rapallo, where we got a ferry to the beautiful village of Portofino. A drink in the piazza and then a stroll along the road took us to a small bay for a dip. We then had lunch at a beach bar, before heading back to the ferry. The next day, the girls had planned a trip to the Cinque Terre, while the boys were staying on board to clean out the car. Polly, Indi and I headed to Sestri Levante, where we caught ... read more
