Last weekend I visited Cork in the south of Ireland with a few friends. Cork City is much smaller than Dublin but it has a great hometown feel. It really reminds me of Pittsburgh. Friday night we took the opportunity to get to know the city by going on a great pub crawl/tour. On Saturday we went to Blarney Castle outside of the city. The castle was amazing and because its not tourist season we had the chance to climb and explore the castle and grounds. Even though its winter here, the countryside is still a beautiful shade of deep green. And of course, I took the opportunity to kiss the blarney stone which is suppose to give you the talent of eloquent speech. In addition to traveling, I am absolutely loving my time in Dublin. ... read more

So, tomorrow marks the eighth week of my stay. Not really much to say about that. I've just ended the third week of classes and I am really excited about them. Sean nos is lovely. I am finding it hard to keep vibrato and such out of my voice though. I can thank Les Hale for his teaching methods, as with just a small bit of modification I use that voice for sean nos. Very direct, and it carries well. My tin whistle (or penny whistle for you Americans) prof is an absolute delight to watch play. Her fingers are so graceful and expressive. Definitely an inspiration for my own practicing. My Latin poetry class is challenging, but not over my head, for which I am grateful. At the moment we're doing Catullus, for which I ... read more

We woke up to a beautiful sunrise this morning as the ship glided into Cobh harbor. The town looked pretty in the morning light and we laughed as we passed a bunch of young guys up on the hill, swaying arm in arm, singing at the top of their lungs, trying to get the attention of the ship’s passengers. We enjoyed our breakfast on the verandah in the cool, fresh air. It was shaping up to be a lovely day. We disembarked and quickly found our private driver guide for the day, Kevin, from Butler’s Buses. After greetings all around, we headed for Blarney Castle. On the way, Kevin filled us in with information about the town of Cobh and County Cork. Cobh was the last place the Titanic stopped before making her fateful crossing across ... read more

Today was the final day of my early start music course. *sigh* I am not at all happy for it to be over. This means that the actual semester will start, and I'll have to go to real classes. That said, I think I took more notes in these four weeks than I have taken in any other course. I learned so much about music in general, 'Irish' music in particular, and innumerable bits of very specific information. What is Irish music? so our prof asked today in class...and I thought I'd write a little about it. First of all, there is no one Irish music. There are Irish musics, varying from a sean nos singer to a ceili band to a Limerick rapper to a jazz sax player...ad infinitum. The musics of Ireland are like ... read more

Been wandering around now for upwards of two hours trying to find the bay. A bay. Any body of water larger than a river. The utter lack of streetsigns once one leaves the city proper is making this rather difficult. After a time I had only the general cardinal directions to help me - and once I found myself in suburbia, they were no help at all. I've plopped down in the 'Douglas Community Park' to enjoy the shade before I try to find my way back to the part of the city I know. Next time I try this, I think I'll just follow the river. Now this is not to say I'm not enjoying myself - on my walk I got into a richer part of town: all the houses were gated, set back ... read more

My original plan regarding travelling around the country was to purchase a bicycle and make my way around in that fashion. I'm not so sure that plan is going to work anymore, but it definitely isn't going to deter me from seeing the countryside! I may just do it mostly by bus and on foot instead, due to the fact that bikes are outlandishly expensive here, at least the ones I've seen so far. Also I'm not too sure how well I'd do in any sort of traffic. You wouldn't think that switching the lanes would be that hard to get used to, but there really are more changes than that to take into account and I don't want to put anyone in danger :) Anyway, I'm having a wonderful time but am quite ready for ... read more

Today I actually got up the guts to go a little farther away from my apartment. I would say that I traipsed around the SW third of the city for about 3 hours. I had three goals in mind when I set out, which were accomplished in the first 15 minutes: find sugar (something I forgot to purchase yesterday), a headset for my computer (since my bloody bluetooth doesn't seem to want to work properly), and the post office. To minimize my tourist-y appearance, I wore my run-down shoes, neutral colors, my school bag over my shoulder, and carried my camera in my hand instead of around my neck on a strap. Not sure how well it worked, but since I hardly ever open my mouth, I should be able to blend in. Right? Anyhow, I ... read more

It's a pity that on the first day of one's experience in a faraway country one must be jetlagged. But I push on, brave soul that I am. I took AA from Minneapolis to Chicago and then to Dublin, where I taxied to the train station and got on to Cork that way. I have been trying to get myself settled in, but I have still managed to go for a rambling 1/2 hr walk, just trying to get my bearings. One thing I figured out is that most things here are closed on Sundays. The weather here is much more pleasant than it is in Iowa. I would say that today it's in the lower 60s F, with a nice breeze, especially by the river. The I like the architectural style, which is mostly tall ... read more

After a very long journey from Cambridge via 4.5 hour train and then 2.5 hour ferry, I made it to Dublin. I got a train and then the appropriate bus to taking me to my host Djamal's house. I arrived close to 8pm and was exhausted from all of the travel. He has a very small flat and there was another couch surfer there as well. We all stayed up talking a bit and I went to sleep on the love seat about 10pm. The next day I woke up early and took my time to get out, leaving the house to gry skies and rainfall by 10am. I walked down to the city center on O'Conell street and continued to Trinity College. After being in Cambridge, Trinity college in Dublin had nothing on campus beauty. ... read more
