I swear, Jenn and I came to Cork with the best of intentions. We were going to see Blarney Castle, go to the Fota Wildlife Park, maybe take a half-day trip to Kinsale or Cobh…but for some reason we did none of it. In spite of that, we loved Cork. It’s in close competition with Dublin for our favourite. Can you tell we’re city girls? I’ve read over and over that the best of Ireland is in its small towns and villages, but we fell in love with its cities. I’m sure I would love rural Ireland as well, but without a car, it wasn’t to be. Still, we didn’t feel restricted, or that we were ‘missing’ anything - we found it quite easy to talk to locals and it was always apparent that we were ... read more

Today was a trip to Blarney Castle. Lost of stairs to climb up and down. For Amie there were also waves of vertigo frm the top. It was very high up and quite windy. But we still don't understand how the royal women could go up the spiral staircase and through the tiny doors in their large puffy skirts. It was my turn to kiss the Blarney Stone. I had no idea that you had to pretty much dangle through this opening in the wall, upside down, bent backwards, and rely on the old Irishman to haul you back up. A piece of advice to all, at least make a kissing noise if you don't want to make contact with the librally salivated stone. The grounds of the castle were a great place for picnicing and ... read more

Well I did a tour of Blarney castle, Kinsale, and Charles fort last week i think. Trying to keep everything fresh in my head. THe Castle was sweet, dungeons, escape tunnels, and of course the Blarney stone. Apparently it was brougth from Isreal along ass time ago split inhalf and the other half is kept in Edinborough castle. When prince Charles turns king he will get them or something?? Pretty cool. So I got to kiss this rock that has been kissed for the last 500 years or so. YUmmy. Hopefully i will bring me good luck as they say. But what a property the castle is on just amazing. Kinsale was a small harbour town on the coast, very touristy. then Charles fort was wild. An old fortress on the ocean. Wouldn';t want to attack ... read more

But yeah went out drinking both nights and had a blast. Crazy packed pubs wiht amazing music. Seriously good times. So easy to meet up with a crew and go out for drinks. Jared and Danny had a game of cricket down in Cork on the Saturday and as it was a long weekend we decided to make the most of it and head down there for three days. We set off from Dublin about 7am anticipating a long, slow ride with the rest of dublin also deciding to get out of the city for the weekend (just like Auckland on a public holiday). We managed to have a pretty easy journey apart from passing a car crash and arrived with plenty of time to spare. Saturday was a beautiful day weather wise, unfortunately the boys lost the cricket in the last over and I was stuck at the cricket ground all day. Sunday we woke to the now increasingly familiar sound of rain and wind (loving this "summer"!), ... read more

Cork: Sheilas Hostel was OK... sort of run of the mill, although very clean and well appointed. After checking in and buying a parking disc for the car (1.80 Euros for 2 hours, and you're supposed buy a new one every 2 hours which sort of limits where you can go! I just bought 2 and scratched off 2 different time periods on them.) we walked down to the bus station and bought tickets on Bus Eiarran to Blarney. You can take a 3 hour tour but that is restrictive and cost a bit more than the 5.10 Euros round trip ticket on regular bus. We got to Blarney and paid our 8 Euros for admission. Again, a great tour of a cool place. I kissed the Blarney Stone, but Manoli bowed out. You had to ... read more
