I am going heavy on the pictures, light on the content this time, folks. Here is the Reader's Digest update: Spent a few days in Santorini, Greece, rented a 4-wheeler and didn't kill ourselves even with Chris at the wheel (or handlebars). It was only a 50 cc and I'm pretty sure my parent's neighbor's 6 year old son has one that powerful. We were CRUSIN' uphill. Came to Naxos and almost didn't get off the ferry. We are talking a BIG ferry and they almost couldn't put the ramp down on the pier due to winds and turbulent seas... Seriously almost didn't let us off. Once they did I think my 40 ound bag was the only thing that kept me from flying off into the harbor. The next day was nice and we sat ... read more

Santorini What an awesome break.... It was not exactly the typical week spent on a Greek island. We arrived on Halloween in the late afternoon. In Santorini, the tourist season winds down at the end of September. October is their shoulder season, and at Halloween the place basically shuts down for the winter. It took us a lot longer than usual to find ourselves a place to stay. We were harrased (as usual) when getting off the boat by the hotel touts, but we didn't get a good vibe from anyone. We eventually picked a guy in town who was a little more persistent than the rest. We followed him down a few alleys to a private house with the upstairs bedrooms converted to hotel rooms. The place was nothing special, but the price was incredible: ... read more

Second go-round... Back on Kalymnos. Two weeks of climbing, three rest days, swollen fingers, fire in my muscles, and David Sharpe! Beautiful People My new friend Shay Har-noy lives in America, but we ended up crossing paths in Israel. I was telling him how one of the things I love about climbing is all the hot men with their tops off. He exclaimed, "I know! You would think other women would have caught on by now! Even men who are in their forties with kids will still have six-packs." Dave Sharpe drew my attention to the obvious. Women who climb are in good shape, and he is happy to watch them, as I love to admire the men. Step Up As I have previously mentioned, lessons learned in climbing will translate into real life. Sometimes ther ... read more

Yesterday, after breakfast and blogging, Eric and I walked down to the village (Hora), and as we approached we noticed there were hundreds of people lined up in two directions at the tiny church on the ferry dock. We soon discovered we had the good fortunate of being "at the right place at the right time" on a Greek holiday celebrating the nation's independence. Apparently, being Sunday, it was also a day for communion service at the tiny church. Ferry boats full of Greeks poured into town and the passengers lined up behind hundreds of others to enter the church. What a difference a day makes! On Saturday, the village was all but empty, and many merchants appeared to be closing for the winter season. Yesterday, every cafe' was filled to capacity with families. Many of ... read more

We remain on the island of Mykonos; today is our last full day here, as we leave tomorrow for Athens. Although the weather has turned cool, this has been a perfect time to be here. The tourist are all but gone, and some of the shops have already closed for the season, so we practically have the island to ourselves! The Porto Mykonos Hotel is idyllic, with it's whitewashed villas, heated pools, expansive balconies, and perfect hillside location. There is even a lovely chapel on the property. Sidewalks twist and turn in every direction, leading guests around the property and down to the village of Mykonos. Every day there are one or more smaller cruiseships coming into port, but they seldom stay overnight, leaving the island peaceful and quiet. Large ferries come in and out each ... read more

Hi All, Today is day 6, but our first day to be able to log on to the internet. We had an uneventful trip to Athens, and on to Santorini, but an unpleasant surprise awaited us when we opened our luggage in Santorini. An apparent leak inside the cargo hold of the plane from Atlanta to Newark (we think) resulted in a soggy mess in one of our mega cases. Clothing was not only wet, it was stained with a green "goo", that would not wash out. So far, I have thrown away a favored pair of pants, a brand new knit top, and 4 pair of E Ray's underwear. Those of you who have traveled with us in the past, know that E Ray packs light, so the underwear issue will be critical any day ... read more

After the rain yesterday we were ready to do something today. Not much fun watching Greek television. Can't really understand too much. The english channels don't start until 8 or 9 at night. I woke up with a very sore back. Too much walking yesterday. We took a taxi into town, (we are staying in a village called Imerovigli) Got on a tour called the Caldera tour. By boat it takes you to the volcano island. They neglect to tell you that it's a 1/2 hour hike up a steep hill. There are 4 points in the hike A,B,C,D. With my back today, I made it to point A!!!!!! Nic went all the way and enjoyed it! By the time she got back down to me My Ibuprofen had kicked in and I felt better. Our ... read more

That was the fastest flight in the history of flights. Didn't have time to drink a glass of water. They served a chocolate filled croissant and a glass of water. My shoe had come untied before boarding the plane. I Didn't even have time to tie it on board. I have to tell you about Nic's blunder. She hastly packed her back pack for the flight and forgot her razor, jack knife and big bottle of water in it. Security only found the bottle but we still had to go back and check her backpack. Luckily we had time. We arrived in Santorini about 11 last night. That's about 3 in the afternoon for the rest of you. We got to our hotel which is more like an apartment. We will have to buy some food ... read more

Our next port of call was the Greek Isle of Patmos. Our first view of Greece almost brought tears to my eyes. The water was the deepest, yet brightest blue I have ever seen...almost purple. Patmos was everything I pictured.....white houses with blue doors, fishing boats, men sitting around drinking ouzo (ahhh, makes me homesick for Papoo), and everything perched high up on the cliffs..I was surprised that the Islands really look like big brown rocks jutting out of that incredible azure water. We even found ourselves a taxi driver that looked like a long lost Moskonas Uncle. We headed up to the Cave of John the Apostle..the cave in which John was exiled to and received the book of Revelations from Jesus. ..it was appropriately holy and cavelike. I couldn't help but think,...if you are ... read more

Next port of call, Mykonos. Unfortunately, we arrived at dusk and only had one evening to take it all in. We had great fun, none the less. We meandered around the fishing village of Chora, watching the fisherman(and women) clean their catch, getting lost in the narrow, winding streets. Bella found herself a surrogate Papoo sitting on a porch and climbed right up for a cuddle. We met Petros the Pelican who has apparently been the Island mascot for 5 decades....we were wondering why he looked so bored. He was really cute, chasing after a Greek restaurant owner with fish in his pocket. Nate had his first Ouzo on Greek soil in a waterside cafe as the girls threw rocks into the Aegan. A very lovely evening. ... read more
