Sun 29th CORFU Docked in Corfu at 0800. We had ordered breakfast in our cabin so we got ready, had brecky when it arrived and then set off to explore Corfu on foot. Once again, no tour organised, just exploring on our own. It was quite a long walk into town…about 2miles and then we continued walking out to the old fort to have a look. We then walked through the town, exploring through all the small cobbled streets. As it was Sunday, and winter, most shops were open, but many little tourist shops and café’s had opened for the cruise ship. The last ship for the year we were told. So many shops had specials on. Good for me!! We were back on the ship by 1130 as all passengers had to be on board ... read more

Geo: 39.6178, 19.9196The last time we came to Corfu, which was again off a ship, we were so hung over that all we did was stagger round a museum, have a beer and come back. This time we thought we ought to see a bit more of the place so we were on a coach hurtling along the very narrow roads. Several times we ran into cars or other coaches which had to reverse to let us pass. At least we got a taste of the island which I must say I would not come and stay at. It was probably a delightful island at some point but is now full of hotels and tourist bars. Our guide today was some mad old Greek woman who did not use the audio machines so unless you were close ... read more

PANORAMA - Paleokastritsa Bay And then we landed in Corfu. This was totally out of our original plan. But, it was a creative way to keep moving. Plan B now included a four day stay in Corfu, a flight to Santorini with an overnight there, and then an early morning ferry to Sifnos. Which is where we are now, but back to Corfu. Call us crazy, but we like to stay out by Mouse Island and the airport. Mouse Island is one of the most scenic spots in Corfu town and the airport can be very entertaining. Yes, it's a bit loud, but so fun to watch the planes land and take-off from the causeway in the middle of the approach way to the runway. We have gone there for years and it's just a silly ... read more

CORFU Sunday 3rd May 2015 Before going to bed last night it was another time change - clocks forward an hour so we can be on Greek time. Having left Messina, we travelled along the Messina Strait around the toe of Italy and travelled towards the island of Corfu. Another glorious day greeted us, a late breakfast before heading off into Corfu Town. Corfus main income is from tourism with its main export is olive oil. The shuttle dropped us at the Spilia gate near the old port. The old quarter is likened to Venice with its tall houses and narrow alleys and the British influence is evident with the bandstand and the cricket square (an all weather strip now). Our walk took us from the 'New Fort' a 16th century Venetian construction with the British ... read more

Corfu is a Greek island only an hour ferry ride from Saranda, so I decided to go there for a day trip. My first time in Greece! I've always wanted to go to Greece but so far, have never made it there. Corfu was ok, but not as great as I expected. The best part came when I was visiting the castle. I found a path that led to a small beach near the sailing club and stayed here. I found a bathroom, changed into my suit, and actually swam for the first time this summer. It was really nice and I spent the most time here, under a tree, in the shade. I always find it hard to swim on solo trips because 1. will someone not steal my stuff? and 2. there is no ... read more

Geo: 39.6178, 19.9196Today was the first and only time that the Disney Cruise Line made a stop in Corfu, Greece this year. We had a later excursion today so we didn't meet until 8:45 in Cabanas. We then met in the Walt Disney Theater for our excursion. The island of Corfu is very close to both the mainland of Greece and also Albania and both of those could be seen just across the water. We boarded our bus and headed to Paleokastritsa Bay on the north west side of the island. Our bus dropped us off at a beautiful bay where we were able to get into the crystal clear, blue water. The water was cold but, when in Greece we had to get in. We then took a short ride to a Byzantine Monastery of ... read more

I spent the week in the Greek party resort of kavos with some university friends. Many people have seen this place on tv or in the newspapers due to it getting much negative press. When we arrived it was late and our bus got hounded as we drove down the strip. The hotel we we're suppose to be staying in hadn't been finished being renovated so we were forced to stay in a different one. The hotel was €30 for the week so I think you can imagine what it was like... The next day we had a chilled time by the pool and went to town where much of it was very underdeveloped and pretty run down. By this stage of the holiday we were a bit worried to say the least. At night we ... read more

Arriving at Corfu again we had only about 4 hours including getting off and back on the boat so our main aim here was to see the old fort and lighthouse. What an amazing place! This island has a great feel about it and we wandered the old town streets awhile and eventually found the old fort and palace. Walking across the moat you felt you were stepping back in time, we climbed the acropolis to the top and what a great view over the town. This fortress dates back to about 600ad when the local people needed walls and a fort to stop the marauding packs from attacking them all the time. Eventually the Turks took them over for quite a while and then the Venetians came in 1300 and kicked the Turks out and ... read more

Breakfast on the aft deck this morning as the sun was finally shining. We didn’t get into Argostoli until midday so we had a nice relaxing morning. Once we arrived in port, we had lunch before leaving the boat because Argostoli isn’t very big and there doesn’t seem to be much to do except souvenir shopping. We packed our bathers as there is a small beach at the north end of the town and headed ashore. The beach is tiny and made of shells and broken pottery, worn down like sea glass. Em went on a treasure hunt along the beach and found lots of tiny pieces of broken tableware, with the glaze still attached showing the patterns from years ago. Who knows, maybe there were even some ancient bits in there! We waded in the ... read more
