We are fast asleep when I hear the dreaded alarm bells. The Captain announces that a fire has been detected and he will keep us informed. A few minutes later he tells us that there is smoke in the incinerator room and the crew is determining what has happened. Now it seems that a fan belt on an electric motor has broken and the motor has burned out and collapsed creating the smoke that was detected. Everything is now under control and we can return to enjoy our evening. Should have been hard to get back to sleep but it wasn't. We awake at 6:00 am to thunder and lightening. We're approaching Corfu and the weather does not appear to be cooperating. We sail through a band of heavy rain and I thank HAL for providing ... read more

Sunday, Sept. 15 - A sea day This is the only sea day on this voyage and we enjoyed every relaxing minute, From now on it is port after port. To give us this sea day, the Captain slows the vessel and, at night, stops the engines entirely. We are in the Ionian Sea and cruising north to our first port, Kerkira, on the Island of Corfu. We have a leisurely breakfast in the dining room where I was able to snag a glass of milk with only two tries. Checked out my bill and noticed that my CCL shareholder credit had not been posted. Provided the Front Desk with the paper work and should see it on Tuesday. This has not been my best packing experience. I was undecided whether to bring my white slacks ... read more

Geo: 39.6178, 19.9196So we went to the island of Corfu. We got there at the usual time of around 8am and they started disembarking soon after. We had no official tour set up for this port so we just took the ship shuttle offered and went to the town. The bus dropped us off right next to an old fort sitting on a point offering some sort of protection to the town in days past. You could walk all the way to the top for a great vantage point of the town but Mom said no to that. So I was content to wander about the lower portion, taking pictures of walls, coastline and massive architectural structures from unique angles to add interest to much of what we had seen in places before. I put Karen ... read more

This is a great place for a holiday. We'd like to spend more time here but no...it's Albania tomorrow, which we hear is really an interesting place to go to and we are looking forward to it. But, Corfu. Yesterday was a quiet one for us. We explored the old town again and struck a flotilla of cruise ships emptying out their cargo onto the streets of the old town just as we arrived via a bus. The bus trip was great because it took us through parts of the city we wouldn't otherwise see. And while Corfu is a tourist destination it doesn't have the infrastructure like hop on, hop offs that bigger places do so this was a good thing to do- public transport, can't beat it. We don't recommend being here when the ... read more

Our last day in Paleros was a quiet one where we pretty much just enjoyed the town and the natural beauty of the beach and scenery. We visited the local Greek Orthodox church and lit candles for loved ones, walked the streets and soaked up the ambience of the village waking up to a new day. It's a slow wake up. No one seems in any particular hurry and with the heat already well into the 20's at 9.30 one can see why. Gavin had gone to the beach for an early swim. We returned to the apartment to find him nursing several badly rope-burned fingers. He'd tried to hold onto a squall-struck umbrella on the beach, a big umbrella that sits in a metal pipe anchored in the sand. The force of the wind was ... read more

Can you believe we are on to our second round of visitors.... Time really flies. Before our friends arrived we had another truly splendid evening at George's. He was celebrating the arrival of his first grandchild - a little girl who is named Mavreta, after his late wife - and so put another lamb on the spit with all the trimmings.... Those of us who were there were invited to join in the festivities. And boy, was there a bunch of us...! What a time we had...the food was scrumptious and seemed to be unending. We were treated to a variety of tastes: the usual array of tzaziki, aubergine salad etc and then clam risotto, kokarestsi and of course the lamb... And naturally the liquid refreshment was flowing too.. (Especially for you, Donald...?) Once the feasting ... read more

Geo: 39.6178, 19.9196The Corfu tour started early, 8am with a bus ride into the mountains, on some very narrow switchback roads. Stopped at a seaside town and went on a boatride around the bay and into some caves. Back onto the bus and onto a village where Derek ate a huge piece of Baklava. Drove thru beautiful countryside with olive trees and grape vines everywhere - took some great photos. Slow drive thru the OldTown, and back to port. Back onboard for lunch at the buffet and a lazy afternoon, bliss! Dinner was formal night, so we dressed up and had our photos taken - champagne in hand.Derek = Crab cakes, Vegetarian Moussaka and Rum Baba.Kate = Smoked Duck breast, Chicken Cordon Bleu and Choc Jaffa cake. The waiters did a march thru the restaurant as ... read more

After a wonderful week of relaxation, we returned to the boatyard for a gruelling day of work on the boat! Fortunately we were rescued and whisked back up the mountain to Panagula where we celebrated Kevin's Birthday at Marianthi's - again! We had a feast of Souvlaki, the hugest and most delicious, fresh garden salad and chips. And a few carafe's of wine too! The next day Lynne and I trudged up the hill to collect manure from Alexi's (the local shepherd) goat manure heap, so that we could fertilize her veggie garden. We learnt that goat manure is far better to use than sheep manure, because goats pick leaves off branches and therefore there are no weed seeds in their droppings. Whereas sheep eat grass and weeds and so produce weed-ridden droppings. I wonder how ... read more

I've had such a great day. We got up early and took 2 buses to get to Aqualand waterpark. It was so much fun, though the water was pretty cold again :( there were 3 areas especially for children with lots of slides and shower sprays and tipping buckets. My favourite one of these was the pirate area. It had a huge tipping pirate bucket which I loved to watch...it was very fun to watch it get people :) I also went on the lazy river with mummy and daddy, in the wave pool on a big rubber ring, and a couple of really big slides with daddy. One was a racing wavy slide where I sat on daddy's lap. We went really fast and I really liked it enjoy the very end where I went ... read more

This morning we caught the bus to Corfu Town. I got to go into a play area for a while where a found 2 leaves that I HAD to carry for the rest of the trip :) I saw lots of boats in the harbour, we walked round the old fort - daddy went to the top but I waited for him at the bottom with mummy. We had a wander around the old town and market, had some yummy crepes, but it was just TOO hot so we then went back to the hotel for lunch. Today we had lunch in the beach restaurant which was so much nicer then the buffet lunch...it was actually really nice. Plus we could eat looking at the sea, it was much calmer today then yesterday so if the ... read more
