I’m on the road again!... errr, actually, I’m on a plane, and not again. Nor do I want to be on a plane again, not for the flying, but because airports are cages of human doom, which induce a nervous breakdown in the most stable of the species. I just want to go to Greece, and drink copious amounts of cocktails next to shimmering blue water....but airports don’t seem to understand this! First they want to me have a full on sweaty tear-filled meltdown over the amount of toothpaste I can fit in a 20x20cm clear bag. And not just ANY clear bag, it must be THEIR clear bag! And it must be sealed, for god knows what bastarding swineair (Ryanair) demonic hell will unleash itself from the underworld if my toothpaste accidentally touches the side ... read more

Un alt punct important o ... read more

We decide to get up early so that we can visit Myrtos Beach hopefully before it gets too crowded. I go down to breakfast to find that I'm the only person here. Fortunately the apartment owner has a very cute Scottish Terrier called Freddy who decides to keep me company. This is our last day in Assos, and it doesn't feel like we've been here for a week. Issy says that she's decided to re-rate Assos as a ten out of ten, and hope that some later destination can knock it off its perch. Each time we've come to Europe we‘ve stayed at fewer places for longer, but even a week here doesn't feel like it's been enough. We head back down the long and windy road to Myrtos Beach. There are quite a few people ... read more

I think that our blog might be appealing to the wrong audience. I notice that the two posts from last year's trip that have been read the most often are "Topless Sunbathing with a Difference" and "Indecent Bottle Openers". I think I might need to take a bit more care with the titles from now on. We head off towards Myrtos Beach, which is only about a ten minute drive from Assos. Issy thinks that it might be safe for us to drive there without her needing the assistance of her coma-inducing drugs. She tells me that as long as I drive at the same speed all the time, she thinks that she'll be alright. I tell her that if I drive around the hairpin bends at the same speed as I drive between them, I'll ... read more

The alarm on my iPad goes off at 6am. It has a very annoying sound that I only associate with being woken up early when we're on holidays. I started humming it when I thought about setting the alarm last night, and then immediately wondered why I felt the need to hum something that's so irritating. Today we've booked a boat cruise. Issy was hoping that it set off from somewhere nearby, but unfortunately the place we need to get to to catch it is about as far as you can get from Assos and still be on Kefalonia. She's not happy. She launches into the seasickness pills again, but decides to pass on adding the valium. Maybe today she'll only go into half a coma. Our destination is Skala village in the far south-east corner ... read more

Today we were supposed to be going to the neighbouring island of Ithaki. That would have involved driving on a windy road, a ferry ride, and then more driving on another windy road, and that would only have been to get there. Issy says that it might be better if we do that another day, when the memories of yesterday's travel sickness aren't quite so raw. She finds some different seasick pills, and adds a valium for good measure. We then read that you should be careful if you take the seasick pills with valium, but it seems it's now a bit too late for that. She tells me that if she goes into a coma, I should continue the holiday without her. We wait half an hour for her cocktail of drugs to take some ... read more

There are windows in our apartment's bathroom. This wouldn't normally be worthy of comment, but they aren't there so you can look outside, they're there so that you can look into the living room. Maybe they're also there so you can look from the living room into the bathroom, although I'm not entirely sure why you'd want to do that. Today we've decided to drive to the village of Fiskardo, which is at the far north end of the island. Issy is looking forward to this like a hole in the head. She says that she felt sick most of the way driving here from the airport along the very windy road along the coast, and the road we're going to be on today doesn't sound like it's going to be too different. She tells me ... read more

We sleep in and miss breakfast at the apartments. We miss breakfast just about anywhere. We walk down into the village square and get some lunch. We eat at a restaurant at the opposite end of the village from the one we ate at last night, but we still have the same waitress. I hope they're paying her well to run between the two. Issy has a really bad headache, so she heads back to the apartment for a rest while I climb the hill to the Venetian fort on the opposite side of the harbour. Issy gives me the customary warnings about being careful, and I give her my usual response about sending out a search party if I'm not back by morning. The path is paved, wide and gently sloping, and the views over ... read more

We land in Doha and transfer to our flight to Athens. We're both feeling like zombies after fourteen hours in the air, and we've still got quite a few to go before we get anywhere near a bed. We read that Qatar's in the midst of a squabble with its immediate neighbours which means that the national airline can't fly over the neighbours' airspace, or it risks being shot down. Instead we find ourselves taking a detour to fly over the airspace of the apparently much safer, more friendly and more stable countries of Iran, Iraq and Syria. We land in Athens and transfer to our flight to the island of Kefalonia where we collect our hire car. Hire car man says that our chariot is one eighth full of petrol, and that we must therefore ... read more

Joining Edwin and Joke from our ship we took a five hour tour of the Island of Corfu with a driver, we drove around most of Corfu stopping at the best view points including a very scenic spot for lunch at a local bakery to have fresh lemonade and feta cheese on their terrace before continuing our tour around the island. Our driver took us to his traditional village where we walked around the small winding streets, we saw his beautiful small church and a museum displaying the history of olive oil manufacturing. We found the island very green, with olives and cedar trees everywhere, we learnt how to own olive trees was profitable for people, as they not only harvested the olives but also could sell the timber which was very hard and burnt well ... read more
